Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beret
A beret is a soft, round cap. It originated in the Basque region which is spread across the countries of France and Spain. It can be worn by both men and women.
2. Bindi
A bindi is a colourful dot worn on the forehead by South Asian women. Traditionally it was worn mostly by married women. In more recent times, it has become a fashion item and is worn more widely.
3. Sunglasses
Sunglasses are also referred to as shades or sunnies. Popular as a fashion accessory, they also have a utility value. The glasses help protect the wearer from harmful rays of the sun. They also provide respite in strong sunshine protecting the eyes from the glare of the sun.
4. Face mask (or surgical mask)
While face masks have been commonly used in Asia during times of high pollution or in flu season, they become ubiquitous around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Face masks were made mandatory in many countries, especially in certain high risk areas, as a means of stemming the contagion.
In some cases, this also became controversial with people protesting that mandatory orders were unconstitutional and infringed upon their personal rights.
5. Necklace
As indicated by the name, a necklace is a piece of jewellery worn around the neck. These are sometimes also called chains. They can be made of precious metals like gold and silver or also of less expensive materials like beads.
6. Blouse
A blouse is a type of garment that is worn on the upper body. It can be more formal like a shirt. It is generally paired with trousers or skirts.
7. Waist chain
In Indian and some African cultures, belly chains or waist chains are worn by women. These can be made of precious metals like gold or silver, or of decorative material like beads. Ornate waistbands that are part of the wedding trousseau are called kamarbandh in India - kamar meaning waist and bandh meaning tie.
The skirt or sari is then worn lower on the hips to give the waist chain visibility.
8. Skirt
There are many different styles of skirts. Fashion designer Mary Quant is famous for designing the mini skirt. Other types of skirts include midis and maxis, all of which are named depending on their length.
9. Socks
Generally made of cotton or wool, socks are used to cover the foot. Depending on the type, they could end at the ankle or even go up to your knee!
10. Shoes
And finally we come to shoes which are worn on the feet. Shoes were originally created to protect the feet. They are now also used as items to showcase your personal style. Specialised shoes are available that serve different functions from sports to weather-related.
