Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tail

The buffalo's tail is long and ends with a fluffy tuft. It swings side to side like a built-in fly swatter, helping the buffalo stay comfortable by keeping pesky insects away.

The tail also shows movement and mood. When a buffalo is excited or annoyed, it may flick its tail faster. In a herd, tails swishing together look like a wave across the grasslands, keeping the group free from bugs. Just like a flag, the tail is easy to spot and adds to the buffalo's powerful look.
2. Hoof

Buffalo hooves are hard and sturdy, perfect for walking across rough ground. The front hooves help support the buffalo's heavy body and keep it balanced while moving or standing.

Their back hooves are tough and sturdy, just like the front ones, but they are usually a little smaller. While the front hooves carry most of the buffalo's heavy body weight, the back hooves act like the engine, giving the push and power the buffalo needs to walk, run, or charge. Together, front and back hooves work as a team - the front for balance, the back for movement.
3. Horn

Buffalo horns curve out and back like strong hooks. They're used for protection, showing strength, and sometimes play-fighting with other buffalo. Both males and females can have horns. The horns of adult male African buffalo are special, because their bases grow together to form a hard bone shield on top of their head, called the 'boss' or shield.

This boss is so tough that it works like a helmet, protecting the buffalo during battles. Horns also help buffalo show who's in charge. The bigger and stronger the horns, the more impressive the buffalo looks to the herd.
4. Ear

Buffalo ears are floppy and alert. They can twist and turn to catch sounds from all directions, whether it's a rustling bush or a friendly call from another buffalo.

Their ears are covered in short hair that helps protect them from dust and insects. Buffaloes often flick their ears when they're annoyed or trying to shoo away flies, so their ears are not just for listening. They're also part of their bug defence team.
5. Muzzle

The buffalo's muzzle is the soft, rounded front part of its face that includes the nose and mouth. It helps the buffalo sniff out fresh grass and water, and it's also used for nuzzling its young. Because the muzzle is moist and sensitive, it's perfect for exploring the world, almost like the buffalo's touch and smell tool all in one.

Their mouths are wide and perfect for munching grass. They chew slowly and steadily, using their strong tongue and wide incisor row of teeth to grind their food before swallowing. They can eat faster than most other African herbivores. They're grazing machines!
6. Eye

Buffalo eyes are big and gentle-looking. They help the buffalo spot movement in the grasslands and keep watch for danger. Their wide field of vision helps them stay safe, because they can see to the sides as well as in front.

Buffalo eyes also shine in the dark, which makes them easier to spot at night. With their calm gaze, buffalo can keep track of the herd and notice even the smallest rustle in the grass.
7. Abdomen

The buffalo's abdomen is the big belly part of its body. This is where the stomach sits, helping the buffalo digest all the grass it eats. Because buffaloes are grazers, their abdomen is often round and full after a long day of munching. It's like the buffalo's energy tank, storing food that keeps it strong and healthy.

Inside, the buffalo has a special multi‑chambered stomach that lets it chew its food twice, first when eating, and again later as cud. This clever system makes sure every bite of grass gives the buffalo the energy it needs to roam the grasslands.
8. Back

The buffalo's back is broad and powerful, with a slight hump near the shoulders. This hump is made of muscle, not fat, and helps carry the weight of its big head and horns.

The strong back muscles also give the buffalo balance and strength when moving through grasslands or muddy rivers. Because the back is wide and flat, birds sometimes perch there to pick off insects, making the buffalo's back a busy resting spot in nature.
9. Jaw

The buffalo's jaw is strong and wide, built for chewing tough grass all day long. Its powerful muscles move up and down to grind food with its teeth, turning mouthfuls of plants into energy.

The jaw works like a natural machine, moving side to side as well as up and down to crush grass into tiny pieces. Without its jaw, the buffalo couldn't enjoy its favourite meal - fresh green grass!
10. Hind leg

Buffaloes have rear legs that are strong and muscular, helping them push forward when walking or running. They also support the back half of its body and help with balance.

The hind legs act like powerful springs, giving extra strength when the buffalo needs to charge or climb through muddy ground. Together with the front legs, they make sure the buffalo can travel long distances across grasslands without getting tired.
