Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who appears in "Castles in the Sky"?

Answer: Frank Gehry

The tree house collapses under the weight of the snow. At the Sugar Bowl, the kids discuss where they will hang out now that it's gone. A mysterious stranger overhears the conversation and tells them to build a new one. He says his name is "Frank", that he is an architect, and he's there to design an art gallery in Elwood City. He gives them his phone number and tells them to call him if they need help designing the new tree house.

The kids have different ideas for what a new tree house should look like. None of them can agree on a new design. Several of them present their ideas to Frank. While they all have bold visions, none of their ideas can properly be executed and Frank tells them why. Frank then tells them to work together on a design they can agree on. They end up designing and building the new tree house to look just like the old treehouse because that is the only design they agree on. Frank praises their work and he leaves them a picture of a building that he designed in Spain. The signature on the picture says that it's designed by Frank Gehry. Brain is astonished because he knows who Frank Gehry is, but he did not know that's who the kids were talking to about the treehouse. The episode's closing credits confirm that is indeed Frank Gehry playing himself on the show.
2. In "Tipping the Scales", who is the substitute band director?

Answer: Dr. Frederique Fugue

The kids are thrilled that they are about to perform at Bartleby Hall in Crown City. Some of them are thrilled about the restaurant they will go to afterwards. Their thrill turns to terror when they learn that Ms. Krasny will not be able to take them there and that their substitute band teacher is Dr. Fugue, the super-strict private teacher that Arthur had in "Arthur Plays the Blues". He makes them all sing one scale until they all sing it perfectly, which takes a few hours. He then assigns homework for them to choose a song to sing, so he can decide who sings the solo part. This upsets Francine because Ms. Krasny had promised it to her.

After school, when Francine finds out that Arthur had Dr. Fugue as a private teacher and he survived, Arthur assures her that even though he is strange and strict, he is a good teacher. Binky tells the kids that he is going to lip sync and not sing because he believes that he will never be able to sing well enough to please Dr. Fugue. The next day, we see Francine's solo audition.

Dr. Fugue gives them a song called "In the Good Old Summertime" which they plan to sing at Bartleby Hall. They sing it well enough to please Dr. Fugue. We then see a time from his childhood, when he was at Bartleby Hall with some other kids, and he loved it. He tells the kids that they will love it too, and he gives Francine the solo part. After class, Binky confesses to Dr. Fugue that he has been lip syncing. Dr. Fugue tells him that he already figured that out and he encourages Binky to actually sing.

On the day of the concert, it is snowing so hard that the road is closed and they are not permitted in Crown City. Therefore, they cannot perform the concert in Bartleby Hall as they planned. The bus ends up making an unscheduled stop at a diner outside of town. This makes everyone feel glum, especially Dr. Fugue. Dr. Fugue comes up with the idea to get them to sing in the diner. He tells them that they have worked so hard and that they sound so good, they have to perform for someone. He says it's better to perform at a diner than to let all that hard work go to waste.

The kids perform their song at the diner and they are applauded by the other customers and the employees. The waitress gives each of the kids a free piece of pie to reward them for their performance. The kids love the pie. The waitress says that the chef ran some five-star restaurants in Paris before he came to Elwood City. Francine thanks Dr. Fugue for everything that he has taught her. The episode ends with the kids singing the song in the bus on the way back to Elwood City, this time with Dr. Fugue singing with them. A snow plow is ahead of the bus and it's clearing the way.
3. In "Francine's Big Top Trouble", Francine struggles a lot at circus camp. What is the one activity that she is good at?

Answer: Clowning

Francine signs up for circus camp because Catherine was a star circus performer when she was Francine's age. The counselor often asks Francine to demonstrate things for everyone, expecting her to be as good as her sister was. It turns out, she cannot do most of the activities very well. About halfway through the episode, she meets the clowning teacher and she finds the one thing that she is good at.

Her clown routine closes the show. Everybody loves it and Arthur tells her that she was the hit of the show. Catherine tells her that she (Catherine) was never good at clowning and she praises Francine's performance.
4. In "Arthur Weighs In", who encourages Arthur to get more exercise?

Answer: Mr. Ratburn

At the beginning of the episode, Arthur does not fit in the suit that he is supposed to wear for a play. When he goes shopping for a new suit, the salesman takes his measurements and calls him "husky." He recommends a green and yellow suit. Mrs. Read buys it, but Arthur does not want to wear it. So he spends most of the episode trying to find ways to lose weight so he can fit in the suit that he wants to wear.

Brain suggests that Arthur eat better. D.W. helps with that by taking away every junk food snack from him and replacing it with a fruit. This does not help him lose weight. When he talks to Mr. Ratburn about the situation, Mr. Ratburn explains that he was husky when he was a kid. He lost weight by playing ping pong. The next day at class, Mr. Ratburn gives everyone a pedometer and encourages them to take at least 10,000 steps a day. Arthur has to discipline himself to do it, but eventually he takes more than 10,000 steps per day. The day of the show, he fits into the costume that he wants to fit in. He delivers a great performance at the play.

In 2020, PBS stopped showing this episode because of the uses of the words "Fat," "Fatty," and "Husky." The whole point of this episode was to help fat kids. First, it helps them by letting them know that they are not alone (even their favorite cartoon character has weight issues). Secondly, it teaches them how to lose weight. When you consider all of that, you realize that those words SHOULD come up in the episode, but the episode was the subject of a lot of controversy.
5. In "The Law of the Jungle Gym", who stands up to the tough customers and allows everyone else to use the jungle gym?

Answer: Muffy

The jungle gym is where the tough customers (bullies) hang out at recess. They beat up anyone else that gets on it. One day, Muffy gets a new camera. To take a picture, she climbs up on the jungle gym to take her best shot. After she does so, she is terrified of what she just walked into.

The other kids hail Muffy as a hero for freeing the jungle gym for them, even if it's only for her photography. Molly is not happy. She feels the jungle gym belongs just to her. The other tough customers do not seem to really feel the same way, but they pretend that they do because they are afraid of her (she is the toughest of the tough customers). Muffy gets a lawyer and she gets Mr. Haney to force the tough customers to allow the other kids to use the jungle gym - Mr. Haney explains that the jungle gym belongs to everyone and not just the tough customers. The tough customers grant access to the other kids, but Molly sprays soda on Muffy and ends up starting a big fight which knocks everyone off the jungle gym.

The tough customers move their headquarters to a place near a fast food restaurant and an ice cream place. The male tough customers like this new place, but Molly does not. Molly goes over to Muffy's house and pleads with her to allow the tough customers to own the jungle gym again. Muffy confesses that her photos did not turn out as well as she expected and she lets them have the jungle gym back. The next day at recess, Muffy and Moly stage a fake argument on the jungle gym in which Molly seems to win, so that no one will know that Muffy willingly conceded and she will not lose any friends. The tough customers return to the jungle gym at the end of the episode.

PBS stopped showing this episode in 2020 for no reason. Well, it was pulled because it's part of the same episode as "Arthur Weighs in," but there was no good reason to pull that episode, either.
6. In "Buster's Green Thumb", who is the caretaker of the Elwood City Community Garden?

Answer: Fritz Langley

Ms. Baxter makes Buster throw out the rotting food in his room. She puts one piece of the food in the compost bin and tells him to give it to Mr. Langley. Buster does that, and Mr. Langley gives him some tomatoes. He eats one and shares the rest of them with everyone he knows. They all love the tomatoes. Muffy offers to go into business with Buster, but he just likes giving them away and making people happy. Ms. Baxter makes some muffins for Mr. Langley.

The next day, Buster takes the rest of the tomatoes in the garden. Mr. Langley gets angry because the garden is for the community and not just him. Buster gives all the tomatoes and the muffins to him. At the Sugar Bowl, when Buster gets a salad with tomato, he does not like it because it does not compare to the tomatoes at the garden. After he explains to his friends why he cannot take any more tomatoes from that garden, Brain suggests that he grow some tomatoes in his backyard.

Buster goes to a greenhouse and takes a tomato plant home. He tries to grow it in his backyard, but it withers away to near-death. He puts it in the compost bin and gives it to Mr. Langley. Mr. Langley tells him that some worms got to it and it's been overwatered, but it might still be alive. He decides to put it in the community garden to revive it. Mr. Langley has arthritis, so Buster digs for him. The two of them properly introduce themselves by their first name. Mr. Langley reveals that his first name is Fritz.

The next day at the pool, Muffy reveals that she wants to make some products with Buster's tomatoes. Buster tells her that he does not have any tomatoes for the products right now and he asks all his friends to help with the gardening. Under Fritz's supervision, all of Buster's friends and Mr. Ratburn do some work at the garden. Buster gives Fritz some tomato sauce that he and his mother made. Fritz loves it. Muffy wants to sell it and charge a lot of money for it. Buster puts some garlic bread in Muffy's mouth to stop her from talking.
7. In "Lights, Camera, Opera", whose father takes her to the opera?

Answer: Muffy

Mr. Crosswire surprises his daughter with tickets to an opera called "Carmen". She does not know how to react because she does not know what opera is. When Muffy goes to the store to buy a dress that she can wear to it, Prunella explains to her that opera is people wearing silly costumes singing for four hours in a language that you do not understand. When she gets home, she asks Bailey to sing some opera for him. Bailey obliges and sings an excerpt from one of Wagner's operas. He sings it beautifully, but Muffy hates it and she is horrified to realize what her father will take her to.

The next day at recess, she tells her friends what she knows about the opera that she is going to. Binky, overhearing the conversation, tells her that he has a CD of "Carmen" and he invites her over to his house to listen to it. Muffy comes over and he plays it for him, but she falls asleep while listening to it. As the big day draws nearer, she continues to dread the thought of going to the opera. Her mother explains to her that she thought she hated opera to until her husband (Muffy's father) took her there and now she loves it, and her mother gives her some opera glasses so that she can see the looks on the actors' faces.

The show comes, and Muffy promises not to fall asleep. Surprisingly, she enjoys every minute of the opera. When it's over, she stands up and cheers "Bravo! Bravo!" She uses her opera glasses to notice that Rodney Gilfrey (who plays the bullfighter) is winking at her. At the end of the episode, Bailey hangs up an autographed poster from Gilfrey in Muffy's bedroom.
8. In "All Worked Up", who gets a new job?

Answer: Ms. Read

Mrs. Read gets a job where she will be working at an office downtown instead of her computer at home. This means that she will not be home in the afternoon. This terrifies Arthur and D.W. On his mother's first day at her new job, Arthur gets a C on a quiz, ended a streak of five consecutive As.

After Arthur talks with Buster and Binky about it, they tell her that she may love her new job and become a completely different person. That evening, she comes up with a new hairdo, which terrorizes Arthur and D.W. Mrs. Read makes D.W. her new "personal assistant." That does not last long.

The next day, D.W. calls her mother at work several times until her mother sends her a fax telling her to stop doing so. After that, while Arthur is trying to study, D.W. breaks his timer. That makes Arthur mad for a few seconds, but then D.W. reveals that she can count to ten. D.W. helps Arthur study for his next quiz, and he gets an A+.

The morning after that happens, the kids go into their parents' room and jump on their bed to celebrate his A+.

When they see how she reacts, they also celebrate the fact that she loves her job but she's still the same mom that she always was.
9. In "Arthur Makes Waves", who does Arthur secretly befriend?

Answer: Molly

It's a hot day and the community pool is closed for repairs, so Arthur and D.W. spend the first few minutes of the episode looking for somewhere to cool off. Some of their friends have pools and Grandma Thora takes them to the senior center pool, but they all have various problems. The Tibbles play too rough and they break their own inflatable pool. Muffy does not allow the kids inside the water of her pool and instead she just uses them to pedal her inflatable raft, and the pedals conduct heat. The water in the senior center pool is heated and the kids want cold water. Eventually, they find someone who has a pool.

They find out that James (a classmate of D.W.) has a pool. James' mother permits Arthur and D.W. to swim there. Just as they're about to get in, Arthur makes a terrifying discovery. James has an older sister, and it's somebody who Arthur knows. It's Molly, one of the tough customers (bullies) at Lakewood Elementary. She has bullied Arthur and his friends in the cafeteria and at recess multiple times before, and she tries to do it again. She warns Arthur that she will hurt him if he gets in the pool.

Arthur decides to leave, but then D.W. gets angry at Arthur for giving up too easily. D.W. angrily tells Molly that Molly's parents said they could swim there. Molly talks to her parents and she is unhappy to learn that D.W. was telling the truth. She then calls Rattles and informs him of the situation. He tells her that she just has to make them so miserable that they do not want to come back (ironically, that's exactly what the Tibbles and Muffy did, albeit by accident). Molly then puts a hose in the pool as a dividing line. She says that she swims on her side of the pool while Arthur. D.W., and James must swim on the other side (her side is much bigger). The other three get in. At first, they splash each other in various ways. Things change when Arthur plays basketball and D.W. uses her arms as a hoop. Molly gets rid of the hose (so the entire pool is free for everyone there) and teaches Arthur how to shoot hoops. She then asks Arthur to teach her how to squirt water with her palms, and he does. From then on, they all have a great time together.

Later at the Sugar Bowl, Arthur buys two cones of ice cream and one of them is for Molly. Before he can give it to her, Rattles walks in and he is angry to see Molly hanging out with Arthur. Arthur pretends that Molly forced him to buy ice cream for her as punishment for using her pool, and this fools Rattles. At the park, D.W. comes up with a plan that Arthur and Molly agree to. The plan is that Arthur and Molly will pretend to be enemies when other people are around. Unknown to them, Muffy spies on them and sees them shaking hands on this.

Muffy tells Arthur's other friends that he and Molly were holding hands at the park in broad daylight. None of them are happy to hear this, but Brain and Francine believe it. Buster does not believe it at first, but later inside Arthur's house, Buster sees Molly returning a basketball that she borrowed. She's a little bit late in noticing that Buster is there, so she is not able to convince him that she and Arthur are enemies.

Later at the library, Arthur gets a book about hand tricks in the water and gives it to Molly. Slink walks by and she angrily gives the book back to Arthur and calls him a baby. This fools Slink at first. However, as soon as Slink walks away, Molly and Arthur go back to being friendly to each other, not knowing that Slink is looking out of the library's window and watching them and Brain is hiding behind some bicycles and also watching them.

Slink and Brain tell their friends what they saw. Slink's friends decide to "save" Molly and Brain's friends decide to "save" Arthur. All of Arthur's friends and all of Molly's friends meet in a corner of a street and argue for a bit, and then they go to Molly's backyard. They open the gate without permission and get away with it. When they do not see Arthur, they are pleased. After they all go to the Sugar Bowl, Arthur shows up. He and Molly playfully trade insults, but they remain good friends without everyone else knowing. At the end of the episode, Molly and James go in their own pool while Arthur and D.W. walk to the reopened community pool.
10. In "It Came From Beyond", what is the name of Grandma Thora's new dog?

Answer: Killer

On a rainy day, a dog shows up on Grandma Thora's porch, seeking shelter under the chair. Grandma Thora tries to take the dog in, but the dog growls. Grandma Thora just leaves the door open for the dog to come in.

The next morning, the dog is asleep on the couch. Grandma Thora notices a name tag that says "Killer." Grandma Thora gives some food to Killer, but Killer growls again and only eats after Grandma Thora leaves the room. Grandma Thora watches from another room as Killer eats, and Grandma Thora is happy to see that.

Grandma Thora takes Killer for a walk. While she does so, she puts up some posters around town with pictures of Killer. While she does that, Killer meets Nemo and Crusher. Nemo insults Killer, but then she growls at him. Than she growls at Crusher. Crusher gets scared and backs away.

Grandma Thora invites her grandkids to meet her new dog. Arthur and D.W. show up at her house and the former brings Pal. D.W. ignores her grandmother's warning and gets close to Killer and than Killer growls at her. After the people walk away, Pal tells Killer that she needs to apologize to D.W., and Killer refuses. Killer offers some food to Pal, but then Killer attacks Pal.

When Pal returns to his own backyard, he gives Kate and Amigo an exaggerated story of what happens. Killer shows up at this house and Pal tells Amigo and Kate that's who attacked him. Amigo tries to be friendly to Killer, but Killer bites him. The Reads take Amigo home and Grandma Thora takes Killer to the animal shelter.

The people at the animal shelter recognize Killer and even know her by name. They tell her that a lot of people have had her, but they always return her to the shelter after a few days. Killer is then placed in a room for "Repeat offenders" and another dog tells her that it's the "end of the line." Grandma Thora changes her mind and takes Killer back home. However, Grandma Thora tells Killer to be nicer to her grandchildren and other dogs.

Killer apologizes to Amigo and Pal. She even offers them a ball. They do not accept her apology. She returns to Grandma Thora's house but from there, she overhears Pal telling Kate that Killer should leave and never come back. Killer sadly leaves Grandma Thora's house, but before she can leave town, she sees Nemo stuck in a tree. Just then, a fire truck comes by and Killer gets in the road. The truck stop and she alerts the men to the cat in the tree. Nemo is rescued.

Amigo tells Kate and Pal what he heard about Killer. Apparently, one of the firefighter's dogs told Amigo what Killer did. Amigo and Pal go to Grandma Thora's house (Killer has returned there after this) and they give Killer a bone. From this point on, Killer lives with Grandma Thora and Killer remains friends with all the other animals and babies in Elwood City.
11. In "Three's a Crowd," what activity does Prunella's mother teach?

Answer: Yoga

It starts off with Prunella's mother teaching just Prunella how to do yoga. One day, when Prunella and Marina are playing together in Prunella's room, Marina accidentally falls into a perfect yoga stance. Prunella invites Marina to do yoga with her and her mother, and her mother grants that permission. The next day, the three of them do yoga together. Marina does yoga better than Prunella, which makes Prunella jealous.

The next day while Prunella and Marina are shopping, Marina says that she loves yoga and that Prunella's mother is a great teacher. Marina also says that she and her mother do quilting together, but Marina prefers yoga and she tells Prunella that she is lucky to have such a mother. Prunella is not happy to hear that. Later on, Muffy wants to join them. Prunella rejects that and while Prunella and Marina walk away, Prunella laughs at the thought of Muffy doing yoga. Marina agrees with what Prunella is saying, but then Marina says that if anyone could teach Muffy how to do yoga, it would be Prunella's mother. This makes Prunella angry.

The next night, Prunella has a nightmare in which her mother says that Marina is her real daughter. It seems that in the real world, this is actually Prunella's biggest fear. Prunella decides to get "revenge." The next morning, she goes to Marina's house and asks her mother to teach her how to do quilting. Prunella constantly praises Marina's mother while doing it, but Prunella injures all of her fingers. When Marina comes home, Prunella tells her how lucky she is to have such a great quilting teacher as a mother. Prunella thinks that this will make Marina jealous. Marina is not jealous at all and she gives Prunella some tips on how to quilt without injuring her fingers. When Prunella sees that her "revenge" plan failed, she goes home.

Prunella then gets to the phone just before Rubella can get there. Rubella leaves the room and eavesdrops. Prunella calls Marina's mother and tells her to tell Marina that Prunella's mother pulled a muscle and cannot do yoga anymore. The next morning, the mother does not want to do yoga. Rubella then comes in and calls out Prunella on her lie. Prunella then confesses that she lied to Marina's mother because she thought Marina was going to steal Prunella's mother. Prunella's mother says that she likes Marina, but she is not her daughter and she will always love Prunella more.

At the end of the episode, Prunella's mother decides to teach a yoga class in her backyard with Prunella as her assistant teacher. The members of the class include Marina, Arthur, D.W., Buster, and Francine.
12. In "The A Team", which two kids join the Elwood City All-Star soccer team?

Answer: Francine and Brain

Lakewood Elementary's team is bad except for Francine and Brain. One day after soccer practice, another girl talks to Francine and says she was watching them practice. She says that she noticed that Francine and Brain are much better than the other kids and she recommends that they try out for the Elwood City All-Star soccer team. Francine and Brain do just that and they make the team. This means that they have to quit the Lakewood Elementary team because a lot of the practices conflict. Brain also has to quit the computer club, which he was supposed to lead.

The coach is tough. He criticizes everything they do. Even when they do something good, he criticizes them and tells them that they could have done it better. He holds practices in heavy rain and refuses to cancel unless there's lightning. He does not call Francine and Brain by their real names. Francine and Brain do not enjoy it.

One day, it is revealed that their first game will be against Lakewood. This makes all of the kids laugh except for Francine and Brain, who do not want to humiliate their friends at Lakewood. At the game, Lakewood is two players short, so the all-stars lend them two players: Francine and Brain. During the game, Francine and Brain remember how much fun they used to have with Lakewood. The sportsmanship was better, the players were more supportive of each other, and Coach Crosswire rewards his team with pizza and ice cream after the game. Even though they lose, Coach Crosswire praises his team, as opposed to the all-star coach who criticizes his team even when they win. Additionally, the computer club might dissolve if Brain does not return to it. For all these reasons, Francine and Brain quit the all-star team and return to the Lakewood team.
13. In "Buster the Mythmaker", which one of his rumors is proven to be true?

Answer: A lot of dogs went missing in Turkey Hill Park

Buster reads a lot of rumors online and he shares them with his friends. However, almost none of them are proven to be true. Buster admits that he had no idea that people lie on the internet (it happens all the time). One day, he and Arthur go to Turkey Hill Park. They have heard two rumors about that place: 1. There are Siberian tigers there, and 2. A lot of dogs went missing there. Buster thinks that the tigers ate the dogs. They talk to the ranger, but get no useful information. They walk around the place and they find a man with a mysterious contraption hiding in a tree. They conclude that he is a tiger-hunter and they think this proves that there are tigers there (why they jump to this conclusion is beyond me), and they run to Arthur's house.

Arthur gets a phone call from someone mysterious who tells him to go to the ice cream shop to learn more about the tigers. Arthur and Buster go there, and someone in a disguise sits with them and tells them more about the tigers and some other rumors. When Ms. Powers offers some ice cream to him, she calls him "Alan." This blows his cover. Then again, I was never fooled. I did not find the disguise to be convincing. Besides, they were at HIS family's ice cream place and anybody else would have asked them to meet at the Sugar Bowl. Despite all of that, somehow Brain's disguise had fooled Arthur and Buster until his mother blew his cover. Brain admits that he made up the tiger rumor and several other rumors as an experiment to see if people will just believe any story he makes up. Buster asks Brain how he got an actor to play a tiger-hunter. Brain is confused because he did not do that. This is when Arthur and Buster finally realize what I had already figured out long before this point in time.

The man in the park is not a tiger hunter. He is a dog stealer. Arthur, Buster, and Brain report the man to the police. The man is arrested. This makes it on the TV news. On the news, the ranger tells everybody that all of their lost dogs have been rescued and she tells them all to come to the park and get their dogs. Arthur, Buster, and Brain are rewarded with a big feast at the park. They find a candy bar there. When Buster asks the other two kids if they know how they made the candy bar, Arthur and Brain jokingly come up with more ridiculous rumors about the bar. Buster tells them a true fact (that they use a bad chemical). Arthur puts down the fruit and picks up an apple.
14. In "Binky Goes Nuts", who helps Binky cope with his peanut allergy?

Answer: Jenna

When Binky learns that he is allergic to peanuts, his mother (who is a nurse) becomes extra-cautious. She constantly reads labels to see if things have peanuts in them. She stops getting Chinese food because a lot of it is made with peanut oil. She buys a cell phone for Binky so he can call her if he has an allergic reaction outside of home.

She sends an e-mail to the other parents to let them know so they can tell their kids. Jenna's parents got the message and they inform Jenna, who then helps Binky.

She finds foods that do not have peanuts in them and suggests them for Binky. She shows him a book in the library about peanut allergies. She then tells Binky of her own experiences of being allergic to milk. She encourages Binky to learn as much as he can about his allergies.

He learns a lot, and in the end, he shows his parents a Chinese restaurant where they make peanut-free food.
15. In "Breezy Listening Blues", which business starts playing music to boost sales?

Answer: Brain's mother's ice cream shop

Brain's mother starts playing a CD called "Breezy Listening" at her ice cream shop. The music is designed to make people want to buy more ice cream. Brain thinks that the music is ruining his brain because, on the first day that she started playing it, he his lowest-ever test grade, a B-. Brain's mother puts him in charge of the music at the shop.

He takes suggestions from the customers. Each customer has a different preference. However, every time that he plays one customer's preference, the other customers get upset and leave.

In the end, he gets an idea to make a CD called "Sundae Hits," which is a combination of all of the favorite songs of the regular customers. They start selling ice cream AND copies of the CD, and in the end, their business is better than ever.
