Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Burmese

Answer: Cats

The Burmese cat originated in Burma. Originally, the colour of the Burmese cat was only in brown but now is available in several colours. The Burmese weighs on average between 4 and 6 kg (9 and 13 lb) and has quite a stocky look. There are two types of Burmese, the American Burmese and the European Burmese. They are regarded as two distinct breeds because of a few distinctions. One of the differences is that the American has a rounded, short-muzzled head, while the European has a more wedge-shaped head.

Burmese cats can make excellent pets for children, as they have a playful and loving nature. They like nothing more than to play with children.
2. Maine Coon

Answer: Cats

The Maine Coon is one of the largest breeds, and a male can weigh up to 4-8kg (9-18 lbs). Although they are large, they are known as the "gentle giants" due to their nature. This breed of cat is very good with children and dogs too, so they make excellent family pets.

The Maine Coon is very vocal, and you will hear them chirping away. Unlike some breeds of cats, the Maine Coon likes water and will play with it for ages. The bushy tail of this cat is nearly as long as its whole body, and when cold it will wrap its tail around its body to keep warm.
3. Sphynx

Answer: Cats

Although most people think the Sphynx is hairless, that is not quite true. The Sphynx has a very fine layer of down, but this may be hard to see. One thing the Sphynx doesn't have, generally speaking, is they don't have whiskers or eyelashes. It may be possible they can grow these, but they fall out very quickly. So in short, while we say this breed is hairless to the visible eye, if you look very closely, you may find some very fine hair.

This little fellow makes a perfect pet. They love to be stroked and have cuddles, they are very good with children, but as with all animals you must be kind and not rough with them. When you pick up the Sphynx it has a unique feel to the touch, as it has no fur it feels very warm. Because this cat has no fur, when outside in the sun they can get sunburn, so you have to be careful. If it's very hot, it is a good idea to use an animal sun cream or bring the cat indoors.
4. Siamese

Answer: Cats

Did you know that the Siamese cat National Day is on April 6th? It is thought the Siamese cat originated in Siam, now known as Thailand. Records of this breed go back over 600 years. A distinctive trait of the Siamese is the vocal sound it makes; it's very talkative. The colour of this cat can be of various shades, but blue, brown, and cream are popular. Most of the Siamese breed have blue eyes. Many Siamese cats were once cross-eyed, but over time this has been bred out of their genetics.

The Siamese cat does make a good family pet, as it's very loving and gentle and loves being around people. If you're away from the house for long periods of time, maybe this would be a poor choice of cat for you.
5. Golden Retriever

Answer: Dogs

The Golden Retrievers are known for their gentle temperament and eagerness to please, making them excellent companions for families and individuals alike. With proper socialisation and training, Golden Retrievers can thrive in various environments, from busy households to serene countryside settings.

This breed makes excellent working dogs, including service dogs who play a crucial role in assisting individuals with disabilities, providing not only physical support but also emotional companionship. Their intelligence and trainability make them invaluable in various situations, enhancing the quality of life for those they serve.
6. Beagle

Answer: Dogs

Beagles are generally considered to be good family dogs. Their friendly and outgoing nature makes them well-suited to family life. They are affectionate, tolerant, and intelligent, making them good companions for both children and other pets. The beagle was originally bred for the hunting of rabbits and hares and are well adapted to hunt by their own instinct without the need for outside help.

Because the beagle has a very good sense of smell, they can often be seen in American airports looking for illegal substances on the luggage carousel.
7. Dachshund

Answer: Dogs

The dachshund can make a very good family pet but might be better for older children, as if playing rough with them, they can be snappy. This breed has a long body and short legs. This unique physique allows them to excel in activities, as they were originally bred to hunt badgers, which is part of their hunting heritage. Additionally, dachshunds are known for their lively personality and loyalty, making them affectionate companions for those who understand their temperament.

Dachshunds can come in three different types of coat (smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired). They also come in two different sizes, standard and miniature.

When the dachshunds are puppies, they can get into a chewing habit; with appropriate training, dachshunds can learn to stop chewing and discover more suitable ways to channel their energy and curiosity. The cause is usually boredom or just because they are lonely. Regular playtime and the provision of stimulating toys can greatly minimise unwanted chewing behaviours.
8. Great Dane

Answer: Dogs

The Great Dane belongs to the working group. This breed is enormous but is also very gentle and has an affectionate nature. Despite their name, this breed originally came from Germany and not Denmark, which the name implies. Due to their size, they are often known as 'gentle giants'.

They were initially bred in Germany for the purposes of hunting wild boar and protecting estates, owing to their strength and intelligence. Great Danes make great family pets; they're very kind to children, very loyal and eager to please. One thing to note, though, is due to their size, care should be taken around very small children.

They don't like being on their own, so it's important at least one person is in the household at any given time. If you are thinking about getting this breed, take this into consideration. Consideration should also be given to their exercise needs, as Great Danes require regular physical activity to stay healthy and happy. Providing them with ample space to roam and play will help ensure they thrive in a family environment.
9. English Lop

Answer: Rabbit

Domestic rabbits have been cherished for their companionship, unique appearance, and gentle temperament for 100s of years. The English Lop is a large domestic rabbit that weighs on average around 10 lbs (4.5kg); with its distinctive long ears and friendly nature, it has become a popular choice among rabbit enthusiasts and pet owners alike.

English Lops don't make good pets for young children, but for older children, they are fine. Handled gently, they can develop a strong bond with their owners and may even become accustomed to being petted. It's important for older children to learn how to interact with them respectfully, ensuring a positive experience for both the rabbit and themselves.
10. Mini Rex

Answer: Rabbit

In 1984 Monna Berryhill from Texas, U.S.A., developed the Mini Rex, which was bred from the standard Rex rabbit.

These delightful small rabbits thrive on interaction and can form strong bonds with their owners. Furthermore, their playful nature, curiosity, and affectionate temperament make them a joy to observe and engage with, enriching the lives of those who choose to welcome them into their homes. When the Rex is fully grown, it weighs on average 3.5 to 4 pounds (1.5-1.8kg). The fluffy coat of the Rex is renowned for feeling velvety to the touch.

There are several colours to choose from; popular colours are chocolate, white, sable point and smoke pearl.
11. New Zealand Red

Answer: Rabbit

New Zealand Red rabbits are distinguished by their reddish-orange fur, calm temperament, and gentle nature, which render them superb companions. They have a medium-sized, muscular build, featuring straight, upright ears and soft fur that has a coarse texture. These traits make them popular pets for families and individuals alike. Their gentle nature, combined with their striking appearance, ensures they are a delightful addition to any home.

Although the name implies this rabbit came from New Zealand, it actually originated in the United States and was bred in California. It is thought the breed first began around 1910 and was originally bred commercially for the meat and fur trade.
12. Golden Glavcot

Answer: Rabbit

Another breed of the domestic rabbit is the Golden Glavcot. The Golden Glavcot rabbit breed has a specific colour standard that was established in the United Kingdom. This breed is characterised by dark brown ticking with a bright roan tip, as well as a broad slate-coloured band that gradually transitions into brown. The chest and flanks have a uniform tone that is slightly lighter than the rest of the body, while the neck is a light brown colour. The undersides feature slate markings and are either cream or white. The Glavcot is quite small, weighing between five and six pounds (2.2-2.7 kg).

This lovely breed of rabbit is considered quite rare! It was first developed in the UK and got its official recognition from the British Rabbit Council back in 1934. Although both the original Golden and Silver Glavcot varieties became extinct, the Golden Glavcot made a wonderful comeback in the 1960s. Even with this revival, it's still a rare gem. In 2019, the breed was also reintroduced to the United States with only a small number of rabbits.
