Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Gaboon vipers are native to Africa and are the largest of the vipers found in the continent. They have colouring of different shades of brown and use this as camouflage. They feed on small mammals and birds, hiding on the forest floor before striking. Anacondas are native to South America and are sometimes called water boas as they live in marshes, streams and swamps. Anacondas are the heaviest and second longest type of snake.

The copperhead is a type of viper, found in North America. It is sometimes called the eastern copperhead as it lives in the eastern states and in northern parts of Mexico. The inland taipan, sometimes called the fierce snake, is native to Australia. It is one of the most venomous snakes known but it lives in remote areas where few humans live. Its toxin (venom) is said to be strong enough to kill a hundred people at a time.

The banded krait is found in many parts of Asia, including Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia. Its name comes from the black and gold alternating bands which encircle its body. The water moccasin is another viper, native to the south eastern part of the United States. As the name tells you, it lives in or around water.

Black mambas are found in various countries of Africa apart from the northern ones where the Sahara desert is located. They can be seen on the ground and in trees and have a very strong venom. The boomslang is another African snake and lives in much the same regions as the black mamba. It also lives in trees and its name, which comes from the Afrikaans language, means tree snake in English.

The puff adder is also an African snake which is very widespread apart from in the Sahara. It is a type of viper and causes a lot of deaths, mainly because it is found in so many areas of the continent. The boa constrictor is native to the tropical regions of South America. It is not venomous although it can inflict a painful bite. It kills prey by wrapping its body around the victim and holding it tightly to suffocate it. The 'constrictor' part of its name comes from t his practice.

The incorrect answers are all types of lizard.

If you're wondering why snakes are described as venomous instead of poisonous, it's because they inject their venom into their victims by biting. Poisons are taken into the body by eating or touching something poisonous. Some frogs have poisonous skin and some plants are poisonous if you eat them.
