The Works of Lois Lowry Trivia Quiz

This quiz was originally more general, but I've picked four books from Lois Lowry's 'Anastasia' series to narrow it down a bit. It features the first three books in the series, plus 'Anastasia on Her Own'.
This is a renovated/adopted version of an old quiz by author meals

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Anastasia Krupnik', why does Mrs Westvessel give Anastasia an F for her poem?

Answer: Anastasia did not follow instructions and write a rhyming poem

Mrs Westvessel asks the class to write a rhyming poem, but Anastasia's poem does not rhyme. She writes a free verse poem in lower case about creatures living on the bottom of the sea and reads it in class, and Mrs Westvessel gives her an F because it didn't rhyme and she failed the task. Dr Krupnik reads the poem at home and changes the F to 'Fabulous', saying it is a good poem.
2. Dr Krupnik takes Anastasia to work with him and she sits in one of his classes. Which poem are they studying?

Answer: 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' by William Wordsworth

'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' is William Wordsworth's most famous poem. One of Dr Krupnik's students uses a swear word in front of Anastasia and Dr Krupnik tells him that she has heard it before, but would not expect to hear it in a classroom. Another student overuses the word 'dichotomy'.

Afterwards, Dr Krupnik and Anastasia discuss the poem and the line 'They flash upon that inward eye/Which is the bliss of solitude', which Anastasia associates with her grandmother and memory.
3. In 'Anastasia Again!', the Krupnik family are moving house as they need a home with more space. When the family find a house they like, which part of the house does Anastasia love?

Answer: The tower

The Krupniks are moving from their Greenwich Village flat to the suburbs, and Anastasia complains about it as she has a lot of fixed ideas about people in the suburbs, what they look like and so on. Dr Krupnik gets annoyed with her for this. The Krupnik family find the perfect house: Mrs Krupnik finds a room with lots of light that she can use as a studio, Dr Krupnik finds a room that he can use as a study, and Anastasia falls in love with the house's tower, where she has her new bedroom. Before the family move house, both Anastasia and Dr Krupnik write their names on a wall in the flat.
4. What is the name of the Krupnik family's new neighbour in 'Anastasia Again!', who shares her name with a famous lesbian writer?

Answer: Gertrude Stein

Sam thinks Gertrude Stein - or Gertrustein, as he calls her - is a witch, but she turns out to be a grumpy old woman. Anastasia goes next door to meet her and ends up befriending her, even though Gertrude claims she doesn't like people because her husband abandoned her, and is initially hostile to Anastasia, although she likes Sam. Anastasia gives her a goldfish and invites her to the Krupniks' housewarming party, and although she is nervous about it as there are a lot of people, she ends up becoming friendly with the family.

She also reveals that her former sweetheart, Edward, used to live in the Krupniks' new house.
5. What colour does Daphne Bellingham paint her bedroom in 'Anastasia at Your Service'?

Answer: Black

Daphne's father is a minister and her parents never shout at her and always forgive her, no matter what she does. She paints her room black as an act of rebellion, and in the original book, she mowed a swastika into the lawn; this was later changed to her giving the cat a mohawk hairdo. Daphne sympathises with Anastasia and the girls come up with a revenge plot: they will distribute the invitations for a grand party Mrs Bellingham is holding to people in the poorer side of town, including drunks, homeless people and mental patients.
6. What term, which really offends Dr Krupnik, does Mrs Bellingham use for the poorer part of town in 'Anastasia at Your Service'?

Answer: The Habitation of the Great Unwashed

Anastasia does an impression of Mrs Bellingham referring to 'the Habitation of the Great Unwashed', which she thinks is funny, but her parents disagree and Mrs Krupnik calls her a snob. Mr Krupnik is even angrier because he grew up poor and is descended from Czech immigrants.

He later takes Anastasia to the neighbourhood where he grew up and they go to an Italian restaurant. Anastasia also finds out from her parents that Mrs Bellingham's party is a fundraiser for the hospital that saved Sam's life after he had a nasty fall, and is violently sick.
7. In 'Anastasia at Your Service', Sam has a friend he meets at the hospital called Mrs Flypaper. Is she a real person or an imaginary friend?

Answer: A real person

Sam has a bad fall and although he survives, the doctors are concerned because he keeps talking about a Mrs Flypaper, and they wonder if he has brain damage. They also think she might be an imaginary friend. However, 'Mrs Flypaper' is revealed to be Mrs Bellingham.

The day after the party, Anastasia comes to collect her pay and brings Sam along with her, and he calls her 'Mrs Flypaper'. It is revealed that she volunteers at the children's wing of the hospital and Sam calls her 'Mrs Flypaper' because she makes a paper aeroplane for him.
8. In 'Anastasia on Her Own', what is the last name Steve makes up for her?

Answer: Analgesia

Steve, like many seventh graders, is referred to as 'obnoxious' throughout the books. He has a very annoying habit of making up nicknames for Anastasia that start with 'ana'. For instance, when Anastasia's English class are studying poetic meter, Steve nicknames her 'anapest', and 'anastomosis' comes from a science class.

After the disastrous dinner party, Steve calls her 'Analgesia' and Anastasia stops liking him.
9. One of the things Anastasia has to deal with while looking after the house in 'Anastasia on Her Own' is telephone salespeople. What type of lessons does she order while trying to cook a meal with veal and wine?

Answer: Tap dancing

Anastasia is very naive when it comes to telemarketers and ends up accidentally buying not only an electric blanket, but tap dancing lessons. She is supposed to be going on a date to the movies with Steve Harvey, but Dr Krupnik does not want her going out, so he suggests a dinner party. Anastasia cooks a veal recipe with wine and mushrooms, and while she's cooking, a salesman phones up and she asks him for help with cooking, including how to open a wine bottle. Anastasia also dyes the tablecloth purple, as she wants a purple colour scheme, but accidentally dyes her hands and Dr Krupnik's shirts as well.

The day after the dinner party, Anastasia receives a box with a leotard and tap shoes, and realises she has ordered them by mistake.
10. In 'Anastasia on Her Own', Dr Krupnik's ex-girlfriend, a painter called Annie, invites herself over for dinner on the same night that Anastasia is supposed to be going on a date, and Anastasia ends up cooking for her as well. Which is NOT one of the things Anastasia hates about Annie?

Answer: She makes fun of Mrs Krupnik's art.

Dr Krupnik dedicated one of his early books to Annie and has a painting by her, and described her as a 'waif' with long pale hair, but when Anastasia meets Annie, she is tall, fat, eccentrically dressed and has frizzy red hair. She shouts a lot and says 'bleep', which may or may not be a substitute for an actual swear word, but it is when she calls Sam 'Sambo' - after the racist book character - that Anastasia decides she hates Annie. Annie is disgusted by the veal marrow and knucklebones, which Anastasia has wrapped in tights (and forgotten to take out) as she can't find cheesecloth, and even Dr Krupnik finds Annie exhausting.
