Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning, a German soldier asks why the girls are running. Why are they running?

Answer: Annemarie wants to practice for the races at school.

The soldiers tell them not to run because it makes them look like hoodlums. The girls' mothers don't want them to go near the soldiers again because then the soldiers would remember their faces, and the mothers want their girls to blend into the crowd and not stand out. The girls start taking a different path to school.
2. In Papa's story, who rides through the streets of Copenhagen every day on a horse?

Answer: King Christian

Annemarie's father tells her a story about a German soldier who asks a boy about the man who rides by every day, and the boy says it's the King of Denmark. The King needs no bodyguard because all of Denmark loves the King so much that they are all his bodyguards. Annemarie learns that her parents would die to protect the King, so Annemarie says that she would too. Later, Annemarie says that all of Denmark must become bodyguards for the Jews.
3. Kirsti is upset because her mother buys her shoes made of what?

Answer: Fish

There's no leather available because of the war, so shoes are made of fish. Kirsti refuses to wear them until Ellen says that she can use her father's ink to dye the green, scaly shoes black.
4. Annemarie takes what thing, which contains the Star of David, from Ellen?

Answer: Necklace

The Star of David clearly marks Ellen as a Jew. Ellen is wearing it when the soldiers come looking for her. She never takes it off and can't get the clasp undone, so Annemarie pulls it off, breaking the chain. She keeps it until the end of the war, when she gives it to her father to repair.
5. The Nazis think that Ellen isn't a Johansen because she has dark hair and the other girls have blonde hair. How does Annemarie's father "prove" that Ellen is his daughter?

Answer: He shows them a baby picture of Lise, who once had dark hair like Ellen.

Annemarie's older sister Lise had dark hair when she was born; it later fell out and blonde hair grew in. Papa has to take the photos out of the album because the dates are written on the pages while only the names appear on the photographs. The real Lise was born over twenty years earlier and died before the book starts. She was part of the Resistance again the Nazis.
6. What question does Papa ask Henrik that turns out to be a code? It's also the name of a chapter.

Answer: "Is the weather good for fishing?"

Henrik takes Jews across the sea to Sweden; they will be safe there because Sweden is not occupied by the Germans. Anyone could be listening to his conversation, so Papa uses "fishing" as a code for taking the Jews across the sea. He also refers to Ellen as a "carton of cigarettes", meaning that just one person is coming, but that more "cartons", other Jews, will come soon.
7. Annemarie's mother tells her that which great-aunt just died?

Answer: Birte

Annemarie knows she has no great-aunt named Birte and asks Henrik why he and Mama are lying. The death of this non-existent aunt is the excuse the family uses for the meeting of several Jews who are trying to escape Denmark.

Henrik says that they keep information from Annemarie because it's easier to be brave if you don't know anything. After a few more encounters with Nazis, Annemarie agrees, but is able to be brave and help her friend.
8. What's in the casket that supposedly contains the body of Annemarie's great-aunt?

Answer: Blankets and clothing

A Nazi officer comes to see why so many people have gathered at night. Mama claims that they are in mourning for Birte, but they are really Jews waiting to be taken to Sweden. The soldier asks Mama to open the casket, which contains clothes and blankets so that the Jews will stay warm on the boat trip. Mama says that Birte had typhus and that her body could still be infected, which makes the soldier leave without opening it.
9. Annemarie is stopped by German soldiers in the woods on her way to bring something to Henrik. So that they won't suspect her of anything, she acts immature, like whom?

Answer: Kirsti

Her Mama tells her to act like a silly little girl so that the soldiers won't be suspicious of her walking early in the morning. She uses Kirsti as her model: she giggles, chatters, stamps her feet, and cries. She acts very well; the soldier calls her "idiot girl" and lets her continue on her way, though he takes the bread first.
10. What's in the packet that Annemarie must deliver to Henrik?

Answer: A handkerchief

The handkerchief is infused with rabbit's blood and cocaine. The Nazis have started to use dogs to sniff out Jews in hiding; the blood in these handkerchiefs attracts the dogs while the cocaine temporarily numbs their senses of smell. This way, sailors carrying one can thwart the Germans and keep carrying Jews from Denmark to Sweden. In the afterword, Lowry writes that these handkerchiefs really existed.

Soldiers search Henrik's boat right after Annemarie gets there with the packet. If she hadn't come, all the Jews hiding on the boat would have been caught.
