Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "We want...a shrubbery!" The "Knights who say Ni" appear in which very popular "Monty Python" film?

Answer: The Holy Grail

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was released in 1975 and was the first full-length feature film by the British comedy group Monty Python. It is a comedic take on the legend of King Arthur and the quest for the Holy Grail. Despite its low budget, it is regarded by many as one of the best comedy films ever made.

The Knights who say Ni were the keepers of the sacred words "Ni, Peng and Neee-Wom", and those who heard the words "seldom lived to tell the tale". They demanded King Arthur and Sir Bedevere give them a "sacrifice", which turned out to be... "A shrubbery!" Luckily enough, the pair came across Roger the Shrubber, who gave them a shrubbery, and they then gave the Knights the shrubbery in return. Unfortunately, as much as they loved the shrubbery (and its laurels), they had changed their name to the Knights who say "Ekke Ekke Ekke Ekke Ptangya Ziiinngggg!", and demanded another shrubbery and that they cut down a tree with a herring. Turns out, they could escape just by saying "it", which is a word they cannot hear for one reason or another. What a strange movie!

The other options were also Monty Python films with the exception of the "Flying Circus", which was their television show.
2. Shrub is just another name for a tree.

Answer: False

While they are very similar, there are some differences between shrubs and trees. Shrubs have many stems, while trees have one main "stem", known as the bole or trunk, from which the other branches sprout from. Shrub stems aren't very thick, only being about 7-8cm (three inches) in diameter. Shrubs are also generally shorter in height. Sometimes, species of plants can grow into either trees or shrubs. Also, there are some trees with multiple stems, so there is a fine line between the two!

A "shrubbery" is a human-created area in gardens, parks, etc., in which multiple shrubs and other such plants grow.
3. To which Biblical figure did God speak via a burning bush in Exodus?

Answer: Moses

This story can be found in Exodus 3:1-25. An angel of God, communicating through a burning bush, told Moses that he was to go to the Pharaoh of Egypt and tell him to let the people of Israel go. Of course, the Pharaoh did not oblige, and thus followed the famous story of the ten plagues of Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea and the 40 years in the desert before reaching the Promised Land...

Moses, one of the most important Christian, Islamic and Jewish figures, was the son of Amram and Jochebed, but was raised by the Pharaoh's daughter after the Pharaoh had ordered the death of all Hebrew children. His mother sent him down the Nile River in a bulrush craft, and the Pharaoh's daughter found him. He is also famous for receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. According to many, he was also the author of the Torah (the first five books of the Jewish Bible).
4. One of the cutest critters on Earth, the galago, also known as the "bush baby", is native to which continent?

Answer: Africa

The galago is a tiny nocturnal primate endemic to Africa. One of the nicknames the galago has been given is the "bush baby", which refers either to its appearance or cry. The galago has a remarkable jump; the longest recorded jump from a galago was 2.25 metres long (or 7.4 feet)! These animals have large eyes to help see at night, a strong sense of hearing and strong back legs which help with their spring.

They also have a very long tail, which helps balance. They're so cute I got sidetracked writing this question while looking at pictures of them on Google Images!
5. There are two well-known alcoholic drinks called the "shrub": one a cocktail and the other a fruit liqueur. With the latter, which type of alcohol might be mixed with citrus to create the shrub?

Answer: Rum

The fruit liqueur known as the shrub is created by mixing the rind or juice of a citrus fruit (lemon, orange, lime etc.) with rum or brandy and sugar. Its peak in popularity was in England in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The shrub in the cocktail form may also be a soft drink. It is created by mixing sugar, water and vinegar syrup with either soda water or spirits. It was particularly popular in Colonial America. The vinegar syrup which is mixed in this drink can also be named the "shrub".
6. "Mr Rushworth, if I were you, I would have a very pretty shrubbery. One likes to get out into a shrubbery in fine weather." This is a quote from the novel "Mansfield Park", a novel by which author, who also wrote "Sense and Sensibility"?

Answer: Jane Austen

"Mansfield Park" was a Jane Austin novel published in 1814. It follows the story of young Fanny Price, who goes to live with her uncle and aunt Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, as her own family is quite poor. The quote from the question was spoken by Lady Bertram to Mr Rushworth, a wealthy man who was to marry the daughter of Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram.

Jane Austen was the English author responsible for "Sense and Sensibility" (1811), "Pride and Prejudice" (1813) and "Emma" (1816), as well as "Mansfield Park". She was born on the 16th of December 1775, and passed away at the age of 41 on the 18th of July 1817.

Harper Lee is most famous for the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". Agatha Christie is a famous crime writer responsible for books like "And Then There Were None" and "The Big Four". Finally, Margaret Mitchell is famous for "Gone With the Wind".
7. What is the name of the super-quick blue HEDGEhog from the famous video game series of the same name?

Answer: Sonic

Like Mario is to Nintendo, Sonic is to Sega. He's a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who's super quick. He is the titular character of a popular video game series which started in 1991 with the release of "Sonic the Hedgehog" for the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive). He's now appeared in a number of games as well as television series, comic books, movies and more. He's also teamed up with a few other characters, like in the "Mario and Sonic" game series. In 2005, he was named one of the first inductees for the "Walk of Game".

Spyro is a video game dragon from the "Spyro" games, Crash a bandicoot from "Crash Bandicoot" and Banjo a bear from "Banjo Kazooie".
8. What is the name of the English alternative rock band responsible for albums like "The Science of Things" and "Golden State"?

Answer: Bush

Bush formed in 1992 and took their name from the area they lived it, Shepherd's Bush. Their first album "Sixteen Stone" was released in 1994. In 1998, they were nominated for a Grammy (Best Hard Rock Performance for "Swallowed") and they won an American Music Award (Favourite Alternative Group) in 1998.

The band split in 2002, but have since toured again and even released a new album ("The Sea of Memories" in 2011).
9. "Over the Hedge" was a 2006 family comedy film animated by which movie studio, also notable for its work on films like "Shrek"?

Answer: DreamWorks Animation

"Over the Hedge" featured the voice talents of actors such as Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carrel, William Shatner, Avril Lavigne and Wanda Sykes. It centres on a RJ, a raccoon, who teaches a bunch of animals intent on storing enough food for their next hibernation how to steal food from humans. His real intention, however, is to take this food to an angry bear, whom he had previously attempted to steal from and who had threatened death on RJ if he didn't bring back food. The movie was quite well received by critics, scoring a 76% on the "Rotten Tomatoes" website.

DreamWorks Animation is also notable for its works on titles such as "Chicken Run", "Shrek", "Ice Age", "Monsters vs. Aliens" and "Prince of Egypt". Pixar has worked on titles like "Toy Story", "Monster Inc.", "Up", "The Incredibles", "A Bug's Life", "Cars", "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille". Animal Logic has done work on "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" and "Happy Feet". Nickelodeon Animation Studio has done work on television shows such as "Rugrats" and "SpongeBob SquarePants".
10. "The Bush" is an iconic Australian phrase, and one of the most famous men of the bush was Banjo Paterson. Paterson wrote which of the following poems?

Answer: The Man From Snowy River

"The Man From Snowy River" is a popular poem by Banjo Paterson, first published in 1890 in an Australian news magazine called "The Bulletin". It tells of the story of a group of men who pursue a prized horse, who had run away to live with the wild horses. Two movies were made based on the poem: one a 1920 black and white film and one from 1982 (which had a sequel released in 1988). Some of the poem appears in tiny text on the Australian $10 note, along with a picture of Banjo Paterson himself.

Banjo Paterson was born in 1864 and passed away in 1941. He was an extremely popular "bush poet". Amongst his most famous works are "The Man From Snowy River", "Clancy of the Overflow" and "Waltzing Matilda", Australia's unofficial national anthem.

"The Bush" is a term used to refer to rural land, which is often sparsely populated with limited vegetation. It differs from "The Outback" as it is generally used to talk of places less remote than "The Outback". New Zealand, South Africa, Alaska and Canada all also refer to some places as "The Bush".

The other pieces of work were by another notable Australian poet, Henry Lawson.
