1. What alternative name is given to the River Thames when it is flowing through Oxford?

Answer: Isis

The Thames is the longest river entirely in England, and flows for 215 miles from the Cotswold Hills to the North Sea, most notably through London. The first part of the river, from its source to Oxfordshire is alternatively known as the Isis, taken from the Greek goddess of that name.
2. What is the name of the large parkland area located close to Oxford city centre?

Answer: The Parks

The Oxford University Parks, normally referred to simply as The Parks, consist of 74 acres of parkland, with numerous sporting facilities within its boundaries. The University cricket team have played home games in The Parks since 1881.
3. The University of Oxford is world famous, but what is the name of the other University based in the city?

Answer: Oxford Brookes

The University of Oxford is the oldest in the UK and one of the oldest in the world. Oxford Brookes University was founded in 1865 as an art school, and went through a few name changes until given University status in 1992. The college is named after its first principal, John Henry Brookes.
4. Which University of Oxford college is the home of the city's cathedral?

Answer: Christ Church

Christ Church Cathedral has existed since the 12th century, but didn't become the cathedral for the diocese of Oxford until 1546. Its dual role includes being the chapel of the college itself.
5. What is the Oxford Union?

Answer: Debating society

The Oxford Union is a debating society and dining club, supposedly the training ground for future prime ministers. Founded in 1823, it is independent of the University of Oxford, and shouldn't be confused with the student union.
6. What is the name of Oxford University Library?

Answer: Bodleian

The Bodleian Library was founded in 1602 by Sir Thomas Bodley, a diplomat and scholar. The library is the second largest in the UK, after the British Library, with over 13 million printed items. It is a reference library, you can't borrow items from it.
7. Oxford United is a soccer team based in the city. Which major trophy did they win in 1986?

Answer: Football League Cup

Oxford United were founded under their original name of Headington in 1893. Although they have spent most of their history in the lower divisions of the Football League, they enjoyed a brief golden era in the 1980s when they spent three seasons in the top tier of English football.

In 1986, they reached the final of the Football League Cup, where they defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-0 at Wembley stadium.
8. What popular fictional police detective is based in Oxford?

Answer: Inspector Morse

Inspector Morse, created by novelist Colin Dexter, was played in the TV adaptation by John Thaw. Morse is an officer with Thames Valley Police based in Oxford. Filming for the TV series took place in both Oxford and London.
9. What kind of building is the University's Sheldonian?

Answer: Theatre

The Sheldonian Theatre was built in the 1660s and is named after University chancellor Gilbert Sheldon. It is primarily used for musical recitals, lectures and university ceremonies, but wasn't used for dramatic productions until 2015.
10. The university and tourism apart, what is Oxford's main industry, based in the suburb of Cowley?

Answer: Car manufacturing

Cowley has been associated with the automobile industry since 1912 when William Morris started building cars there. BMW became the owners of the plant in 1994, and build MINIs there.
