Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Well, a wiser fellow than myself once said, sometimes you eat the bear, and much obliged, sometimes the bear, well, he eats you". This line was quoted (and badly misquoted in the title of this quiz) in which Coen brothers movie?

Answer: The Big Lebowski

The line is spoken by The Stranger, who narrates the story. The Stranger has a strong western accent, and the word "bear" sounds more like "bar", which may or may not be linked to the frontiersman Daniel Boone, who is said to have carved the words "D. Boon Cilled a Bar on (this) tree in the year 1760".

2. Andres Escobar scored an own goal in the 1994 World Cup against the USA. On his return home, his bad luck continued when he was shot dead. What was his nationality?

Answer: Colombian

Colombia had been one of the favourites in 1994 after dominating the South American qualifying stages. The match ended in a major upset with rank outsiders USA winning 2-1.

It was guessed that either Colombian or US gangsters had tried to "fix" the result. Escobar pushed the ball past his own goalkeeper for the opening goal (the first of his career). On his return home he was fatally shot at least six times; some sources say twelve. However, there is also reasonable suspicion that the murder was about a personal issue, and not connected to the game at all.

The man convicted of the murder celebrated his own luck when he became free after serving only eleven years for the crime.

3. Donald Campbell's luck ran out on 4 January 1967 when he died attempting to break his own water speed record. Curiously, Campbell, who was very superstitious, was said to have predicted his own doom the night before. During a game of cards, he drew a hand which he considered bad luck. What were the cards?

Answer: The ace and queen of spades

Campbell died on Coniston water in England's Lake District when his boat overturned at an estimated 328 mph. The previous evening while playing cards, he had drawn the ace and queen of spades. He remembered that Mary Queen of Scots was reputed to have drawn the same cards the night before her execution. Being very superstitious he feared the worst.

4. As always, I like to take the quiz title at face value. So, around 24-25 April 2009 a man jumped into a bear enclosure and, unsurprisingly, was mauled. At which animal park did this occur?

Answer: Bern Bear Park, Switzerland

The man involved hung around looking over the drop (20ft) into the bear enclosure for a while before taking the plunge. This obviously gave the park staff time to contact the authorities. Police arrived and shot the bear who had pounced quickly and dragged the man across the enclosure.

There was, amazingly, a happy end to the tale as both the man and bear survived the ordeal. How's that for luck?

5. On the subject of bears and luck...The Care Bears were a very popular children's phenomenon that started in the early '80s. In the original line-up there was one called Good Luck Bear. What was the emblem on its chest?

Answer: Four Leafed Clover

Some people thought the emblem was a shamrock, but it was in fact the clover. This misconception probably stemmed from the fact that in the original TV series the character had an Irish accent. In subsequent series the brogue was gone and the voice became American.

6. Anyone who got their hands on this famous diamond must have thought they were "eating the bears". However, they soon found that "the bears ate them" as they suffered untold catastrophes. What is the name of this famously unlucky jewel?

Answer: Hope Diamond

The Hope Diamond was allegedly stolen from a Hindu statue, and cursed by the temple's priests, bringing bad luck not only to its owners but to anyone who touched it. Owners of the diamond included Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who brought the diamond from India to Europe; Louis XIV of France; Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette; George IV of England; and lastly Mrs Edward McLean. They all suffered early or horrific deaths, family tragedies or financial ruin, said to be as a result of the curse. The diamond is on display in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

7. To tie in with luck, bears and the team's Scottish heritage, what is the name of the lucky polar bear that moved from Edinburgh Zoo to the Highland Wildlife Park in October 2009?

Answer: Mercedes

Mercedes was rescued from Canada as she was slated to be shot for becoming a dangerous nuisance to a local town. She was sent to Edinburgh Zoo in 1984, and moved to the Highland Wildlife Park, part of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland in October 2009, just in time to enjoy the snow brought by Scotland's coldest winter in decades.

Brumas was the first polar bear successfully reared in Britain, born in 1949 at London Zoo. Pipaluk was also born at London Zoo in 1967, his name meaning "the little one" in Inuit. Flocke was the name given to the little polar bear cub born at Nuremburg Zoo in 2007.

8. No bears this time, just a bit of good fortune. Which 007 actor landed lucky on the roulette wheel in 1963?

Answer: Sean Connery

Sean Connery landed lucky when the number 17 red came up three times in a row. This earned him $27000, a fair amount in 1963. Apparently the odds against this happening are 50,000 to one.

9. If you are a bear in some parts of Asia, your luck will be out if you are captured. This is a case of "they eat the bears, the bears don't eat them". What part of the bear is considered to be the tastiest tidbit and can cost a diner up to 1000 American dollars a portion when eating in an illegal Asian restaurant?

Answer: The left paw

It is alleged that in China, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan and especially Cambodia, bear meat is illegally served in some restaurants. The paws are considered a delicacy and can be served braised or in a soup. The left paw is especially sought after for its tenderness . The apparent reason is that the bear licks honey off its paws and licks the left paw the most. Hind paws are considered tougher as the bear walks on them, but they too can fetch a big price. What makes it worse for the bears is that fresh bear paws are the most desired, so they are often captured alive or bred for killing, and the paws amputated to order. This is a definite case of this time they eat the bear!

10. "You've got to ask yourself do I feel lucky; well do you, punk?" This quote comes from the film "Dirty Harry", starring Clint Eastwood. Do you know the name of Eastwood's character in the movie? What was it?

Answer: Harry Callahan

Clint Eastwood played Harry Callahan in the films "Dirty Harry," "Magnum Force," "The Enforcer, "Sudden Impact" and "The Dead Pool". Callahan was a tough, uncompromising cop with no regard for authority. He solved most of his problems with his Magnum 44--"the most powerful handgun in the world".

11. Bad luck for a politician happened when he got caught talking. In the run-up to the 2010 general election in the UK, what did Prime Minister Gordon Brown call pensioner Gillian Duffy, which may have contributed to his party's defeat and his ultimate resignation?

Answer: A bigot

While electioneering in Rochdale, Mrs Duffy questioned (among other things) the Prime Minister's strategy on immigration. In the privacy of his car he referred to her as "that woman" and "a bigot" while unknowingly still live on air. He subsequently apologised, saying he had misheard her comments. Mrs Duffy refused to participate in a photo-call shaking hands with Gordon Brown. This was a classic case of shooting yourself in the foot.

12. Bad luck can be brought on by not heeding advice. Icarus was having a wonderful time soaring above the clouds, with the wings his very talented father had made for him. Alas, in his excitement he forgot the warning his father had given about flying too near the sun. The foolish boy did so and the wax on the wings melted, the feathers fell off and Icarus came quickly down to earth--literally. Who was Icarus's father?

Answer: Daedalus

Daedalus was a clever inventor and architect who hailed from Athens. He had created two pairs of wings to enable his son and himself to escape from exile in Crete. He had upset King Minos by giving the king's daughter a clue to help Theseus, his sworn enemy, kill the Minotaur.

13. "Bull and bear" are expressions often heard in relation to the stock market. Bear with me now...A financial crisis started on 9 October 2007, caused by the sub-prime fiasco which created mayhem on the markets. Between then and May 1, 2010, on what date did the Dow Jones Index reach its low point of 6440.08?

Answer: 9 March 2009

In short, "bull" is good and "bear" is bad.

No one knows the exact origins of the terms. There appear to be several explanations. This is only one possible reason and it relates to how both animals attack. A bear lashes out downwards with its paw, hence the downward market trend, whereas the bull attacks, head low, and thrusts up with its horns, ergo - rising market.

14. Once upon a time there was a bear who was adopted by a man and his wife. This bear proved to be lucky for them, as it made them a fortune. But there was an unlucky end to the story. They didn't all live happily ever after, because the bear died. What was the name of this bear who appeared on TV and in films, caddied for Bob Hope, appeared on the cover of "Time" and received a telegram from Ronald Reagan?

Answer: Hercules

Hercules, a grizzly bear, was bought in 1975 by husband and wife Andy and Maggie Robin. They bought the bear as a cub from a wildlife park in Aviemore, Scotland. Andy was a professional wrestler and the bear became part of his act. In 1980, Hercules went AWOL while filming in the Scottish Hebrides islands. He was missing for 24 days before he was found and recaptured. As Hercules fame grew, he appeared in a "James Bond" movie, a Disney film documentary and several television ads. In 1997, he damaged a disc during the filming of a television advert, which led to spinal problems and cut short his career. Three years later, while apparently on the verge of a comeback, the grizzly died at the age of 25. Hercules and the Robin's luck had run out.

15. Bear with me one last time. Of the movie bears listed below, which is the odd one out? Don't know the answer? Take a guess--you might be lucky!

Answer: Huggy

Obviously, all were created characters; however Huggy was human, a character from "Starsky and Hutch", whereas the others were all animated. Baloo was from the "Jungle Book" (Disney movie); Yogi was from the series "The Yogi Bear Show" (Hannah-Barbera); and Paddington was seen on the show "Paddington" (BBC/Filmfair).

You could also say that Huggy was the youngest. Both Yogi and Paddington were first created in 1958, whilst the "Jungle Book" was even earlier, being written by Kipling in 1894.

There is a Huggy Bear in the video game "Toy Commander", but it's not a movie bear.
