Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Most butterflies have spots that, when the wings are unfurled, look like eyes. What is the name for this phenomenon?

Answer: Mimicry

In the case of the butterfly, this phenomenon is referred to as 'mimicry' which is defined as 'the art, practice, or art of mimicking'. The reason that butterflies do this is to confuse predators into thinking that the butterfly is larger than it actually is, therefore reducing the possibility that they will be eaten.
2. Celebrities: What is the name of the former supermodel who has a beauty spot near her upper lip?

Answer: Cindy Crawford

Cindy Crawford was one of the most popular supermodels during the '80s and '90s. She has been on numerous magazine covers and spent a lot of time on the catwalk and in fashion campaigns. She has even tried her hand at acting which hasn't gone amazingly well for her, although this is not necessarily due to her acting ability.
3. For Children: Which animal is said to never change its spots?

Answer: Leopard

'A leopard never changes its spots' means that a person will always have the same traits and, even if they do change, they will always go back to being the person they once were.
4. General Knowledge: In which of these situations am I the most UNLIKELY to be 'seeing spots'?

Answer: I'm having a nice warm shower

Generally, seeing spots is due to a lack of, or too much, oxygen to the brain. After running a marathon, the blood will be pumping to the extremities of the body to keep them working and the brain is working on minimal oxygen. A panic attack usually involves short, shallow breathing and a rapid heartbeat which pumps too much oxygen into the brain. Being hit in the head hard can result in blood flowing to the injured area bringing excess oxygen with it. Having a nice warm shower shouldn't induce you to see spots.
5. Literature: Which author, who was joint winner of the 2004 Boeke Prize with his first novel, wrote 'A Spot of Bother'?

Answer: Mark Haddon

Mark Haddon's first book, 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' and 'A Spot of Bother' examined mental health issues using the perspective of the patient. 'A Spot of Bother' was published in 2006 to mixed reviews. Mark Haddon has also published poetry and youth titles.
Mark Harmon is an actor on 'NCIS', Mark Hammond is an American politician, Mark Hamill played Luke Skywalker in episodes 4-6 of the 'Star Wars' movies.
6. Movies: Which of these people did NOT write the 2001 movie 'See Spot Run'?

Answer: Barry Gibb

Andrew Deane, Stuart Gibbs and George Gallo all wrote 'See Spot Run', a movie about a dog who escapes a witness protection program and is now a crime boss assassination target. 'See Spot Run' was released in March of 2001.
Barry Gibb was one of the Bee Gees.
7. Music: 'Alex on the Spot' by Hans Zimmer and will.i.am was created for which animated movie?

Answer: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa' is the sequel to 'Madagascar' and was released in 2008 by DreamWorks Animation. The story follows the characters and their adventures when they land in Africa. This movie was one of the last film performances for Bernie Mac who died in 2008. Bernie voiced Zuba, Alex's dad.
8. Sci-tec: Which common childhood disease, caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, results in measles-like spots in a small percentage of sufferers?

Answer: Glandular Fever

Glandular Fever is common in childhood and teenage years. It is also known as The Kissing Disease because the virus is found in saliva and is passed on by close contact, such as kissing. Glandular Fever incubates for 4-7 weeks before the sufferer will start to show symptoms.

The rash that can occur with Glandular Fever is usually activated by antibiotics taken to help with the accompanying tonsillitis.
9. Sport: If I am running on the spot, in which direction am I moving?

Answer: Up and down

Running on the spot is defined as 'raising the feet alternatively as in running but without moving forwards or backwards'. Running doesn't usually involve moving sidewards but the body is still moving up and down when running on the spot.
10. TV: Whose cartoon friend was Spottyman?

Answer: SuperTed

'SuperTed' was first aired in 1982 and followed the adventures of a teddy bear with super powers. Spottyman was SuperTed's best friend. He was yellow, covered in green spots and came from the planet Spot.
'SuperTed' won a BAFTA in 1987 for Best Animation.
