Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Diana, famous in her own right, married Elvis Costello in 2003?

Answer: Diana Krall

Born in Canada in 1961, Diana is a well respected jazz singer and pianist who has sold millions of albums around the world. Elvis Costello, real name Declan McManus, is also a successful musician, as was his father Ross, and has produced works in several different genres. Krall and Costello met at the 2002 Grammy Awards and have twin sons together.

Diana Ross was the lead singer of The Supremes before embarking on a solo career, Diana Vreeland was a fashion editor, who died in 1989, and Diana Mitford was one of six British sisters with fascist leanings and links to Hitler.
2. Diana Barry appears in which novel as the best friend of the title character?

Answer: Anne of Green Gables

'Anne of Green Gables' was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery and published in 1903. Set on Prince Edward Island in Canada, the story of the orphaned eleven year old Anne Shirley as she grows up has remained popular ever since. Anne ends up on a farm where the brother and sister were expecting a boy, who would be able to help with the work needed.

Anne forms a close friendship with Diana Barry, who lives nearby, and the pair get into various problems together. Anne sacrifices her own dreams when the farmer dies, returning to the farm to help the bereaved sister - the pair had given her the only home she had known.
3. Michael Jackson's song about a Diana described her with which adjective?

Answer: Dirty

'Dirty Diana' was one of the songs on the album 'Bad' which also included 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' and 'Man in the Mirror'. The song was written by Jackson and is about groupies who target music stars in the hope of becoming famous themselves by association. Claims that the song was about either Diana, Princess of Wales, or Diana Ross were vigorously denied although neither woman appeared to be particularly annoyed about the rumours.

As a single, the song sold as well as you'd expect, reaching the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK Singles Chart, both in 1988.
4. In Roman mythology, Diana was the goddess of the moon and which of these?

Answer: Hunting

Diana is the Roman equivalent to Artemis in Greek myth. As well as being linked to the moon and hunting, Diana is also the patron to wild animals, which seems something of a contradiction to the hunting link, and fertility. Some of these links came from her being identified with Artemis and taking on the same patronages.

In art, Diana is frequently depicted with a bow due to her links to hunting. Aurora is the goddess of the dawn, Vesta is goddess of the hearth and wisdom is associated with Minerva.
5. Wonder Woman's alter ego includes the first name Diana and which surname?

Answer: Prince

Diana Prince was the name used by Wonder Woman in everyday life. Her official status was Princess Diana of Themyscira. The character was created in 1941 as the daughter of Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons in mythology. Wonder Woman's superpowers were given to her by goddesses of Greek myth.

Wonder Woman is among the best known female superheroes and was depicted by Lynda Carter in a television series of the 1970s.
6. 'Sailor Moon' is a manga series which features a character named Diana, who is depicted as which animal?

Answer: Cat

The 'Sailor Moon' series is set in Tokyo and follows a group of girls who are charged with defending the Earth and the Solar System from its enemies. To assist them, they have various allies including three cats from a planet named Mau. The two older ones are Artemis and Luna, while the youngest, Diana, was born on Earth.

The cats are mentors to the girls, can speak and assume human form when needed. Diana is described as grey, and is later revealed to be the daughter of Luna and Artemis who is born in the future before coming back in time to assist them.
7. Diana, Princess of Wales, was born at a home located on which royal estate in the United Kingdom?

Answer: Sandringham

Diana was born into English nobility as her father was Viscount Althorp, later inheriting the title of Earl Spencer. She was the third daughter born to her parents who needed a son to inherit the title - this eventually happened when Diana's younger brother, Charles, was born. Although the family seat is Althorp, in Northamptonshire, at the time Diana was born the family was living at Sandringham, in Norfolk, renting a property owned by the Crown.

Despite their relative proximity at times, Diana and the then Prince of Wales did not meet until she was sixteen and became romantically involved three years later. The details of their ill-fated marriage have been raked over numerous times, so I will add nothing more. Diana's life ended tragically early after a car accident in Paris.
8. James Bond's ill-fated wife was played by Diana Rigg in which of these films?

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

This 1969 film was George Lazenby's only outing as the famous spy, taking the part on when Sean Connery decided to retire from the role. Connery did relent and make one further film before Roger Moore took over for several years. 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was based on Ian Fleming's 1963 novel and features Telly Savalas in the role of Blofeld. a frequent adversary of Bond - Donald Pleasance set the standard for the role.

While carrying out his usual secret agent activities, Bond finds time to romance Contessa Teresa 'Tracy' di Vicenzo and marries her. She is killed by Blofeld in a drive-by shooting as the couple leave for their honeymoon. Diana Rigg has many credits to her name, including Emma Peel in the television series 'The Avengers', and numerous theatre and film credits. She was still working until shortly before her death in 2020.
9. The quiz title comes from a song which became a hit in 1957. Who wrote and sang the song 'Diana'?

Answer: Paul Anka

Starting with probably the worst chat up line in history, 'I'm so young and you're so old', the song 'Diana' was Paul Anka's first major hit, reaching the top of the charts in several countries. To be fair, the following line is 'This, my darling, I've been told' and he was only sixteen at the time, so anyone over twenty-five probably seemed ancient to him. The line 'Oh, please stay by me, Diana' is repeated after each verse.

Anka also wrote 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore' which Buddy Holly recorded and released shortly before his death - Anka donated his songwriting royalties to Holly's widow. Even more famously, Paul Anka wrote the English lyrics to 'My Way', based on a French song.
10. Diana Gabaldon wrote which series of fantasy novels?

Answer: Outlander

The 'Outlander' series is classed as historical fantasy and involves a nurse from the twentieth century who time travels to eighteenth century Scotland. The heroine, Claire Randall, is visiting Scotland with her husband in 1946. She touches a stone circle which transports her back in time, meeting a Highlander named Jamie Fraser. Diana Gabaldon has stated that she was inspired by the Jamie who was a companion to Doctor Who in the BBC time travelling series.

Claire's story continues in the series, which comprises nine books at the time of this quiz in 2026 - a tenth, and probably final, book is planned. The time travelling continues, weaving more recent times with Scotland's turbulent history. The books were adapted for a television series which began in 2014.

The other answers are also fantasy novels, with several books in their series.
