The term 'West Indies' denotes a group of islands found in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The islands encompass three different archipelagos - the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the Lucayan Archipelago. This includes both independent countries and dependencies of European countries.

The name West Indies comes from the historical error of Christopher Columbus thinking he had found a route to India when instead he had landed in the Americas.
