Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one is the Iberian dish served cold?

Answer: Gazpacho

Gazpacho is a cold soup made from a blend of raw vegetables including tomato. There are other dishes using the name such as gazpacho manchego which is a torte rather than a soup, however it usually means the soup dish. It is widely eaten on the Iberian Peninsula, namely in Portugal and Spain.

It is possible that it came with the Romans although tomatoes only made an appearance in the recipe during the 19th century. The image hint shows a gas pipe with a patch on it, which sounds a bit like the soup.
2. If you fancy a European meat stew, which should you choose?

Answer: Goulash

Possibly going back to 10th century in origin, this meat and vegetable stew (or soup) is a Hungarian national dish. It is mainly eaten in central Europe these days. Paprika was not added to the recipe until later as the spice did not arrive in Europe until the 16th century.

The Hungarian word 'gulyás' used to refer to the herdsman but now applies to the dish as well. Large herds of cattle used to be driven to various European cattle markets, which meant the herders had less to carry in the way of food.

The image shows a ghoul (or ghost) with some (wood) ash as the clue.
3. Which chunky soup comes from the Americas?

Answer: Gumbo

Also considered a stew, many cultures have contributed to this Louisiana dish. It usually consists of a strong stock, shellfish or meat or both, a thickener and vegetables. There are many variations within two main categories, Creole and Cajun, and at least two origin stories for the name 'gumbo' from two of the thickeners that may be used, okra or filé powder. The third thickener often used is a dark roux. The image clue shows some gum with a bow.
4. Which is the North American stew?

Answer: Fricot

Traditional fare of the Acadians, an ethnic group who settled in the New France colony of Arcadia (included parts of the now Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) during the 17th and 18th centuries. The biggest group now live in Louisiana, US, mostly as Cajuns. This frugal dish was made with whatever meat was available together with potatoes, onions and dumplings. The image clue shows a cot with a 'Free to a good home' sign on it, i.e. 'free cot'.
5. For a dessert option, which is the one that is virtually a national dish in the Philippines?

Answer: Halo-halo

Halo-halo, or sometimes haluhalo, is a cold dessert from the Philippines. In Tagalog, 'halo' means 'mixed'. The dessert has a Japanese heritage which has evolved over time in the Philippines. It started off as Japanese mitsumame (meaning "many beans"). Philippine variations added preserved fruit and custards to the ice-shavings. It can also have condensed milk or coconut cream, sago and the like served with it. The image shows a couple of halos.
6. Perhaps resembling a block of gold, which is the French almond cake?

Answer: Financier

Made during the 17th century by French nuns of the Visitandine order, this almond cake comes from the Lorraine region of France. It became popular during the late 19th century when a Parisienne baker made them in ingot-shaped moulds to appeal to his banking and finance clientele, also being the source of the current name.

In Australia and New Zealand, a similar almond cake is called friand. The image clue shows money and is the connection to financiers.
7. If you like layer cakes, which is the one from Germany?

Answer: Eierschecke

The Eierschecke takes its name from a piece of clothing dating the 14th century. The attire gives the effect of a three-part garment. There various versions of this cake however they tend to have a base, a layer of quark or something similar and a top layer of custard, sometimes with chocolate layer as well. The image is meant to a eye outlined on a cheque, which together sounds a bit like the cake.
8. What is the Swedish version of this jam-filled cookie?

Answer: Hallongrotta

The Swedish 'Hallongrotta' means 'raspberry cave'. This compares with names like thumbprint cookies, jam drops and pits of love found in other countries. It is essentially a butter cookie with a hole on top filled with raspberry jam. The Swedish use goes back to the 1800s when they were produced at kafferep gatherings, essentially women's private social get-togethers over a cup of coffee. This was a time when coffee was a luxury and coffee shops were male-only. The image shows a cave (or grotto) however they are not raspberry bushes at the entrance.
9. Nothing to do with fish, which of the following is a pastry?

Answer: Haddekuche

A traditional German spiced gingerbread, the name 'Haddekuche' means 'hard cake' in the Hessian dialect of German. It has a distinctive diamond pattern embossed on it, has a diamond shape and rounded edges. The image clue is a reference to the fish haddock, which sounds a bit like this German pastry.
10. If you fancy a dessert, which is the one you should choose?

Answer: Granita

Coming from Sicily originally, this is a dessert made from sugar, water and flavourings served semi-frozen. Its form and texture varies, which may in part be down to the freezing technique used. It is similar to sorbet and Italian ice but is distinct from creamy ice cream and not as compact as sorbet. The image clue shows some granite pebbles.
