Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When operating a miter saw, what is one thing that you should NEVER do?

Answer: Work fast, make small cuts

A miter saw allows you to make precise angled cuts in wood, metal, masonry, and plastics. As with all power saws, it is very important to keep a safe working area at all times when using a miter saw. Paying attention to your work ensures accuracy of your cuts. Keeping the saw blade guards in place and wearing safety glasses are two measures that protect your body against accidents with the saw. Working fast, or making lots of cuts should NOT be an approach with a miter saw because it can cause mistaken alignment of the saw, which could lead to injuries.

2. Marmite is a spread invented in the United Kingdom in 1902. What is the main ingredient in this product?

Answer: Yeast extract

Marmite was invented by the German scientist Justus von Liebig in 1902. The discovery came after realizing that the yeast remaining after the beer-making process could be concentrated into this spread. Marmite has lots of vitamins, especially vitamins B6 and B12. People hold differing opinions about this salty mixture: some love it and some hate it!

3. Halloumi, made on the island of Cyprus, is which of the following types of food?

Answer: Cheese

Made with the milk of goat and sheep, halloumi is a heartier cheese than most. Resistant to melting, some preparations of this Mediterranean treat are done on the grill, and notably, some producers add spearmint to their cheese for flavour. Halloumi, as a product, is distinctly Cypriot in the same way that authentic champagne is only manufactured in the Champagne region of France.

4. Anna Olson (Canada), Duff Goldman (US) and Benoit Blin (France) could all be described as celebrity chefs, but what is their speciality?

Answer: Pastry chef/pātissier(e)

Anna Olsson has presented many TV shows in Canada, including 'Fresh with Anna Olson', 'Sugar', 'Kitchen Equipped' and 'Bake with Anna Olson'. She also had a Twitter series 'Sweet Something' and a YouTube Channel 'Oh Yum with Anna Olson'. Duff Goldman's TV shows include 'Ace of Cakes' and 'Duff Till Dawn'. Benoit Blin is a judge on UK Channel 4's 'Bake Off: The Professionals' and worked at the Ritz in Paris before the top chef Raymond Blanc invited him to one of his Michelin-starred restaurants in 1995.

The wrong answers are regional dishes from the UK and Ireland and, as far as I am aware, do not have speciality chefs to cook them.

5. Strozzapreti means 'priest-choker' in Italian. What sort of food is strozzapreti, found in Emilia Romagna, especially in the area of Modena?

Answer: Pasta

Strozzapreti is long, hand-rolled, chunky macaroni. The two stories about the tongue-in-cheek name are either that priests liked this pasta so much and were so greedy, that they would choke on it, or else that the strozzapreti was lovingly made for the priests by the women of the area and their husbands wished this unkind fate on the recipients of their wives' generosity! No priests were harmed in the making of this question.

6. Muscade and macis are the French words for which two spices that come from the same fruit?

Answer: Nutmeg and mace

Nutmeg and mace come from the fruit of the tree known as the true nutmeg. The nutmeg spice comes from the seed, and mace is from the seed covering.
Both have many culinary uses, particularly in baking or egg based desserts. Mace has a more subtle flavour.

7. A player can land on how many spaces in a game of "Monopoly"?

Answer: 40

There are forty spaces to travel through on a "Monopoly" board and most of these represent properties. There are twenty eight properties on the board in total. Of these, twenty two are streets that are collected into eight different colour groups. Add to this four railway stations and two utilities.

There are four corner squares indicating GO, the Jail, a Free Parking spot and the penalty spot that says "Go To Jail". Add to this three Chance spaces and a further three Community Chests and two spaces where you can be hit with either Luxury Tax or Income Tax.

8. What fish is usually an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce?

Answer: Anchovies

The original Worchestershire sauce is made by Lea and Perrins and the fish used to give it its salty taste is the anchovy. They have been producing the sauce for over 175 years and many other producers have tried to match the rich smooth flavour without success.

9. Which English king's name was never used on his coins in England?

Answer: John

King John was a son of Henry II and came to the throne after his brother Richard. His coins used the same obverse dies as his father and all carried the name HENRICUS. His name did appear on coins from Ireland, however.

10. In the British variant of Bingo, which number is traditionally called "top of the house"?

Answer: 90

Sometimes it can also be announced as "top of the shop" and it is called as such because it is the highest number on the card that can be drawn out. Two fat ladies are called to represent the number 88, Heinz varieties announces number 57 and 39 is called steps, an acknowledgement to the 1915 John Buchan novel "The Thirty Nine Steps".
