Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the oldest among all the International Science Olympiad (ISO).

Answer: True

The history of the IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) dated back to as early as 1959. The competition is held annually. The second oldest ISO (International Science Olympiad) is the IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) which was first held in 1967.

Other notable Olympiads are the IChO (International Chemistry Olympiad), the IBO (International Biology Olympiad) and the IAO (International Astronomy Olympiad).
2. The first IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) was held in 1959 in which European country?

Answer: Romania

The very first IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) was held in Brasov and Bucharest, Romania in 1959. In fact, Romania also hosted the second IMO in another city, Sinaia. Other countries that have hosted this prestigious competition include Bulgaria (1975), Austria (1976), Cuba (1987), Turkey (1993), Taiwan, Canada (1995), India (1996) and Vietnam (2007).

This event is held annually except in the year 1980 due to Mongolia's internal strife incident.
3. Each IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) contains six challenging mathematics questions which cover the field of algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory. What is the maximum score one can score for this paper?

Answer: 42

Each question carries 7 marks, hence the maximum score of 42 marks.
4. The six questions of the IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) are divided into two parts and to be answered in two different days. Participants have to answer three questions in one day. What is the duration of time that is allocated for the 3-question paper for each day?

Answer: 4.5 hours

On average, each participant has 1.5 hours to answer one question. The questions are contributed from each participating country, except the host country. Upon reviewing, the questions are shortlisted. The questions will then be translated by the team leader of each country.
5. Perhaps the most notable participant in the IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) history is Christian Reiher. He won a bronze medal in 1999 and four gold medals from 2000 to 2003. Which country is he from?

Answer: Germany

Reiher was born in Starnberg, Germany in 1984. He also proves his exceptional skills in mathematics by solving the great Kemnitz conjecture which remained unsolved for almost two decades.
6. Apart from the gold, silver and bronze medals, honorable mentions are also awarded to participants. What is the criterion for this honorable mention award? That the participant must score ___.

Answer: A perfect 7 marks for any question.
