Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The word "Toblerone" is a play on words. How did it come about?

Answer: the creator's name and the Italian word for 'nougat'

The word "Toblerone" comes from the last name of its creator, Theodore Tobler, and the Italian word for "nougat", torrone. Tobler created the confection with his cousin, Emil Baumann. It includes milk chocolate, honey, almonds, and nougat.
2. Toblerone comes in a distinctive shape. Which is it? You should 'triple' think this one!

Answer: triangular prism

There are two theories as to the triangular shape of the Toblerone bar. The first is that the creator got the idea from the human pyramid that the exotic dancers from the Folies Bergères made at the end of their shows. The other is that the bar takes its shape from the Matterhorn.
3. What ursine secret is hidden in the mountain logo of the Toblerone bar?

Answer: a bear

Why is there a bear in the negative space of the logo? The bear is the heraldic animal of the city of Bern, Switzerland and that is where the Toblerone company began. Interestingly, Bern is known as the 'City of Bears.'
4. What is the Toblerone Line? Reggie White knows!

Answer: a line of defensive blocks in Switzerland

The Toblerone Line was built for defense during WWII in Switzerland. This line consists of 10 kilometres of nearly 3000 9-ton triangular concrete blocks, that were put in place to prevent German Tank invasions. The blocks were too big for the tanks to go over and too close together for them to go in between. The blocks are similar in shape to Toblerone bars and are so named. Now the line has been left to nature and there is a hiking trail along the route.

Reggie White was an American footballer who played defensive end and defensive tackle, and was known as the 'Minister of Defence.'
5. What was the Toblerone Affair? (hint: sweet tooth)

Answer: a politician bought Toblerone bars using public funds

In 1995, it came to light that a Swedish politician had bought several trivial items with her Riksdag (government) credit card. Amongst them were some Toblerone chocolate bars. As she did not pay the money back, a scandal ensued known as the Toblerone Affair. This led to her having to resign from her position.
6. The Toblerone was first patented in 1909. How many different sizes does it come in? If you are stumped, ask Bo Derek!

Answer: 10

Tobler was concerned that the idea for the unique shape of the Toblerone would be stolen, so he applied for a patent for the manufacturing process in 1909 in Bern, Switzerland at the Federal Institute for Intellectual Property. The Toblerone became the first chocolate product ever to become patented.

Bo Derek was a 1980's sex symbol and best known for her role in the 1979 movie, '10'.
7. Toblerone comes in dark chocolate.

Answer: True

Yes, it does. In fact, Toblerone comes in 11 different varieties. The dark chocolate variety contains 50% cocoa solids. Instead of the iconic yellow wrapper, the dark chocolate kind comes in a black wrapper.
8. What was the ORIGINAL logo on the packaging of the Toblerone? You need to be sharp-eyed to answer this question!

Answer: an eagle

The eagle was on the original packaging of the Toblerone bar and it carried two flags in its talons, one of Switzerland and the other of the city of Bern. That design was replaced in 1970 with a picture of the Matterhorn that had the outline of a bear inside it.
9. Which company, commonly known for its peanut butter and Mac and cheese, acquired Toblerone in 1990?

Answer: Kraft

Yes, Kraft! The Tobler company remained independent until 1970 when it merged with another company and became known as Interfood. Another merger occurred in 1982, and again in 1990. It was at this point that Toblerone became owned by Kraft.
10. Some Toblerone bars have a letter K stamped on the box. What is the 'devout' meaning does the K have?

Answer: kosher

The 'K' is the symbol for Kosher, and it signifies that the bar is pure, having been prepared under Jewish dietary law.
