1. Prawn Cocktail

Answer: Starter

The classic prawn cocktail recipe consists of mayonnaise, tomato chutney, Worcestershire sauce and tabasco combined together with a squeeze of lemon juice. The serving glasses have finely shredded lettuce in the bottom, a layer of sauce and then the prawns with another layer of sauce on the top garnished with a slice of lemon and sprinkling of cayenne pepper.

It was a very popular starter in the 1980s.

Pate is a paste made traditionally from ground or pureed meat mixed with fat and seasoning and sometimes alcohol. Pate can also be made with fish, vegetables or plant-based foods. It is generally served as a starter with crackers or small pieces of toast.
3. Gazpacho

Gazpacho is a tomato-based soup from Spain which is served cold. It originated in the Spanish region of Andalusia. It is a puree of raw vegetables, generally tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers and is never heated. Its light tangy flavour makes it an ideal palate cleanser to be consumed before the heavier main course.
4. Bruschetta

Bruschetta is an Italian starter consisting of grilled bread topped with salt, olive oil and garlic. It is then topped with a variety of different foods such as tomato, cheese or cured meats. Traditionally the bread used is the Italian bread ciabatta although other breads may be used such as French baguette or sourdough.
5. Fish and Chips

Fish and chips is a British main meal which became a staple dish especially among the working classes. It is traditionally a combination of fried fish and chipped potatoes sprinkled with salt and vinegar. Other condiments can be added such as tomato ketchup or tartare sauce. During the Second World War the meal was often served in newspaper. National fish and chip day is celebrated on the first Friday in June.

6. Beef Bourguignon

Beef bourguignon is a traditional French dish consisting of slow cooked beef cooked in a red wine sauce with pearl onions and mushrooms, garlic and bacon lardons. It originated in the Burgundy area of France. Initially it was considered a peasant dish as it was a way to cook the tougher, cheaper cuts of beef.

It is traditionally served with mashed potatoes although it is often served with pasta, rice or a side salad.
7. Paella

Paella is a traditional rice dish from Spain originating in the region of Valencia. It began as a simple lunchtime meal for farmers and field workers cooked over a wood fire with rice and whatever other ingredients were available such onions, snails, rabbit and tomatoes.

The name paella comes from the pan in which the meal is cooked. Saffron is a key ingredient and gives the dish its distinctive flavour and colour.
8. Moussaka

Moussaka is a classic Greek dish consisting of layers of aubergine, sliced potatoes, tomato and minced meat (traditionally lamb) topped with a creamy bechamel sauce. The modern Greek version was created by Greek chef Nikolaos Tselementes in the 1920s. There are many different versions of the dish from Turkey, Egypt and the Middle East.
9. Trifle

Trifle is a traditional British layered dessert consisting of such ingredients as sponge cake, fruit, jelly, custard topped with whipped cream. It is believed the dish originated in the 18th century as a way to use up leftover cake which was often soaked in sherry. For the coronation of King Charles III of Britain, the British chef Adam Handling created Coronation Trifle which consists of parkin (a traditional ginger cake from Yorkshire), ginger custard and strawberry jelly.
10. Tiramisu

Tiramisu is an Italian dessert made of sponge fingers soaked in coffee layered with a creamy mixture of eggs, sugar and mascarpone cheese and dusted with cocoa powder. The name of the dessert means "pick me up". Although there is debate about where it was invented it is generally believed that it first appeared in a restaurant in Treviso, Italy called Le Beccherie in 1969.
11. Kulfi

Kulfi is a frozen dessert resembling ice cream from India. It is often described as the traditional Indian ice cream. It is denser and creamier than ice cream because it is not whipped and this means it melts more slowly. It comes in many different flavours including cardamom, saffron, mango and rose. The word kulfi comes from the Persian word qulfi which means covered cup.
12. Pavlova

Answer: Dessert

Pavlova is a meringue-based dessert believed to have originated in either Australia or New Zealand in the early 20th century. It has a crisp crust and a creamy, soft and light middle. It is topped with whipped cream and then covered in soft fruit such as strawberries or kiwi fruit.

It is named after the Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova. In Australia and New Zealand, it is often served on Christmas Day as it is summer there.
