Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which winery, based in South Australia, is famed for its Grange wine? There is no connection with the golf ball maker sharing the same name.

Answer: Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by Dr Christopher Penfold, a medical doctor. Believing in the medicinal benefits of wine, he initially made fortified wines for his patients. It was in 1951 that the flagship Penfolds Grange Hermitage wine was first created. 'Hermitage', the name of a French wine producing area, was dropped in order to allow sales in the European Union

The others listed are all wineries from the Napa Valley in California.
2. Which winery has an eaglehawk for an emblem, partly because it is symbolic of the founder's German heritage?

Answer: Wolf Blass

Wolfgang Blass produced his first batches of wine in 1966 in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. From Germany originally, he had been asked to come to Australia in 1961 for his experience in champagne-style wine making. It was however with new styles of red wine that he initially made his name in Australia. The Wolf Blass Platinum Label showcases the winery's top wines.

The others listed are well-known wineries in Marlborough, New Zealand.
3. What colourful brand of wine owes its name to a rock wallaby?

Answer: Yellow Tail

Produced by the Casella wine family who emigrated from Italy in 1957. Initially a grape grower then supplier of bulk wine to other wineries, the business created the wine brand in 2000 for the US market. Although not a premium wine, it has been extremely successful. The Yellow Tail name is an alternative for the yellow-footed rock-wallaby.

Brown Brothers is a family-owned wine company in Victoria. Koala Blue was started by the singer Olivia Newton-John and Pat Farrar as a store. The name has been licensed and used to sell wine, amongst other goods. Yellowglen specialise in sparkling wine.
4. A member of Australia's First Families of Wine, the founders of which family firm emigrated from Italy?

Answer: De Bortoli

All of these wine businesses are members of Australia's First Families of Wine, a marketing venture. De Bortoli traces its roots to Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli who emigrated to Australia from Italy and established the business in 1928. Their iconic wine is the Noble One dessert wine.
5. Unrelated to the Belgian brewery of the same name, which winery's founder is regarded as a founder of the Australian wine industry?

Answer: Lindemans

Dr Henry Lindeman was a naval surgeon who emigrated in 1840, planting his first vines in Hunter Valley, NSW. The company's vineyards are now in South Australia.

The others are all Australian wine businesses. Henschke traces its roots to Poland, De Bortoli is Italian in origin and the founder of Brown Brothers was Australian-born.
6. Which well-known wine brand takes its name from a tributary of the North Para River running next to where the winery's founder planted his first grapes in Barossa Valley?

Answer: Jacob's Creek

Johann Gramp, a Bavarian immigrant, planted his first vineyard in 1846 on the banks of Jacob's Creek. His winery and cellar grew to become Orlando Wines, now part of the Pernod Ricard group of companies. Wine using the Jacob's Creek brand was first released in 1976.

The others are also all Australian wine brands as well as being wineries.
7. What wine brand traces its roots to a tough(?) young Devon farmer who emigrated to South Australia in 1850?

Answer: Hardys

Initially Thomas Hardy raised capital by working on a farm, mining for gold and driving cattle. He planted his first vines at a River Torrens property he named 'Bankside' in 1853.

The others are Australian wineries. D'Arenberg produces the Dead Arm Shiraz where grapes are harvested from diseased vines. The vine is slowly killed off by the Eutypa fungus, reducing the yield of the vine but intensifying the flavours of the remaining good bunches of grapes.
8. Which wine's name is the aboriginal for "all the land around"?

Answer: Yalumba

Founded in 1849 by English brewer Samuel Smith, Yalumba is based in the Barossa Valley of South Ausralia. He actually started off building a house at the River Torrens (where Hardys began) but moved after a year. He also spent time raising funds at the Victoria gold fields in 1852.
9. A Polish migrant gave his name to this winery, which is now known for its 100 year old Para Tawny Port. Which winery is this?

Answer: Seppeltsfield

Joseph Seppelt emigrated in 1849, initially trying to grow tobacco but finding the ground unsuitable. Vines were planted in the Barossa Valley and a winery built. The first barrel of port-style wine was laid down in 1878 for a century of maturation.
10. Which winery takes its colourful name from an old goldmine located on ground now planted in pinot noir?

Answer: Yellowglen

The vineyard was originally planted as a hobby by Ballarat businessman Ian Home with a view to produce red table wines. However the cool climate around Smythesdale, Victoria prevented this and led to Yellowglen specialising in sparkling wines.

Blue Poles Vineyard was conceived in 2001 by two geologists at a mine site. The name comes from a Jackson Pollock painting. Black Estate is based on the site of Hercynia, a vineyard established by three German migrants with money from the Bendigo gold mines. It was very successful until the vine disease Phylloxera arrived in the area in 1893, resulting in the vineyard being destroyed as a precaution. It remained vine-free for over 100 years. Gold Rock is a label used by Oakvale Winery, which has a history going back to 1893.
