"Phantom of the Opera" - Carlotta, Part II Quiz

Since everyone knows Carlotta is the better singer and actress, I thought I would make a quiz to try and 'balance' out all of the quizzes that are about Christine, Raoul and the Phantom. Note: This isn't a lyrics quiz!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Carlotta is a great singer and has been the Paris Opera's leading soprano for many years. But what color is her hair?

Answer: red

In all productions, Carlotta has some variance of red hair although Piangi's hair color varies.
2. Although a romantic relationship is sometimes in question, what character followed Carlotta off the stage after the backdrop almost fell on her?

Answer: Piangi

One actress who played Carlotta believes that in the absence of a romantic relationship, Piangi would have done Carlotta's bidding as the way operas were cast was different back then. The leading sopranos sometimes had a bit of power over who was cast opposite them, so Piangi could have just been protecting his own interests by placating Carlotta.
3. How long does it take Carlotta to return to the opera house after Christine sings in the gala?

Answer: one day

We can figure this out easily by looking at the intervening scenes. "Little Lotte" takes place immediately following the gala. After Raoul leaves, the Phantom takes Christine. She wakes up the next morning ("Stranger Than...") and the Phantom returns Christine to the theatre (immediately prior to the first managers scene).

In "Notes I," the managers are going over the morning's papers - giving reviews of last night's gala. Carlotta rushes in a few moments later - the day after the gala.
4. In "Prima Donna," what sort of problems does Carlotta NOT claim as stressing to a prima donna?

Answer: Rivals

While Andre and Firmin are singing their bit, Carlotta and Piangi sing "the stress that falls upon a famous prima donna - terrible diseases, coughs and colds and sneezes. Still the dryest throat will reach its highest note in search of perfect opera!"
5. What does the Phantom say that insults Carlotta in the first managers scene?

Answer: She should be silent on stage

The Phantom's note talks about how the casting should be changed. The part of the Countess "calls for charm and appeal" while the role the Phantom wants Carlotta to play (the Pageboy) doesn't have a single line as the Pageboy is mute (hence "Il Muto").
6. Who waits in the wings during "Il Muto" to watch Carlotta (and not Christine) sing the part of the Countess?

Answer: Piangi

Piangi doesn't play Don Attilo as it's written for a bass singer. We see that Piangi has been waiting in the wings after Carlotta starts to croak, when he runs on stage to try and calm her/get her off the stage. Raoul and Andre sit in their respective boxes while the Phantom ends up looking down on the stage from above.
7. What sort of mistake does Carlotta make when she tries to sing "Poor Fool" for the second time?

Answer: The Pageboy's skirt was already removed

The first time, Carlotta took off Christine's skirt and threw it towards her attendants. After the Phantom interrupts and Carlotta begins the song again, they forgot to put the skirt back on Christine so Carlotta gets tripped up a little as she tries to figure out whether to just pretend to take it off or what.

As for Carlotta forgetting her lines - nope, the Phantom just made her croak like a toad. (Now why, if the Phantom was using ventriloquism, her voice wouldn't be heard *in addition to* the toad is beyond me...)
8. What sort of costume does Carlotta wear in most "Masquerade" scenes?

Answer: spider

Piangi is generally a sun or a clown. Carlotta's costume generally consists of knee-high black boots, black almost fish-net stockings, black wings, and a little leotard with a black tutu.
9. What is Carlotta's chief complaint with her part in "Don Juan Triumphant"?

Answer: it's too small

In the second managers scene, Carlotta throws up the score and rushes up to the managers complaining "Have you seen the size of my part?" Piangi then chimes in with "It's an insult!"
10. One of the singers cannot get their part right in the rehearsal for "Don Juan Triumphant" and Carlotta tries to make them feel better. Who can't sing their part?

Answer: Piangi

Piangi can't hit one of the notes as it's different from the type of music usually sung at the opera. So Carlotta chimes in with "his way is better - at least he makes it sound like music!" Mme Giry was not amused.
