"Night of the Wild" (2015)"Congo" (1995)"Tremors" (1990)"Deep Blue Sea" (1999)"Silent Predators" (1999)"Eight Legged Freaks" (2002)"Night of the Lepus" (1972)"Komodo" (1999)"Them!" (1954)"Kaw" (2007)
The film "Congo" is based on a 1980 novel by Michael Crichton. It has several intertwined plots happening simultaneously. Dr. Karen Ross (played by Laura Linney), a corporate scientist, is heading to Africa to find a lost expedition (led by her ex-fiancee) which was searching for diamonds for a laser on a communication satellite. Meanwhile, a treasure hunter (played by Tim Curry) is searching for King Solomon's diamond mines. Also, a primatologist is on the journey with his gorilla who can sign in order to "get her back to her own kind".
The group finds the ruins of a lost city which contains rare diamonds. However, the city also houses a breed of hyper-aggressive gray gorillas. It is discovered these gorillas were the ones who killed the earlier expedition. The gorillas then attack the current party, killing several of them. A volcano erupts which destroys the diamond cache. The remaining people escape in a balloon and the signing gorilla finds a group of friendly apes.
2. "Night of the Lepus" (1972)
A cult classic, "Night of the Lepus" stars Stuart Whitman and Janet Leigh. The plot revolves around a small town in Arizona that is overrun with a huge overpopulation of regular rabbits. A local rancher asks researchers Roy and Gerry Bennett (played by Whitman and Leigh) to help him control the population as he does not want to kill them with poison. The researchers inject a test serum into a single rabbit but their daughter accidently allows it to escape.
That "infected" rabbit breeds with the local rabbit population and this results in a new, monstrous breed of man-eating, 150-pound rabbits. These monsters then go on a killing rampage through the town. It is finally decided to call in the National Guard. The Guard and local citizens corral the thousands of monstrous rabbits with car headlights into a half-mile section of electrified railroad tracks and electrocute them. The ecosystem then returns to normal.
3. "Tremors" (1990)
Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward star in this sci-fi movie as two handymen in a small town in Nevada. Just as they were considering leaving town for "something more exciting" they come across a couple of strange deaths including a man on a tower who died of fright and a shepherd and his flock all killed (and obviously by a non-human). Working with a visiting seismology student, they discover the problem is caused by giant, mutant worm-like creatures that attack things on the surface that disturb them.
The townspeople soon call these worms "Graboids" and find themselves cut off from the rest of the world. They must take shelter on roofs and other high surfaces away from the ground. Soon the people begin to fight back. Some of the worms are killed with dynamite, one is lured off a cliff, one is covered with concrete, etc. At the end of the movie, the town has survived and Bacon's character, Val McKee, pursues a romantic relationship. However, it is hinted that more mutant worms may exist for a future visit.
An interesting note is that Kevin Bacon has frequently said that Val is the only character he would like to reprise.
4. "Eight Legged Freaks" (2002)
David Arquette stars in this film and portrays a mining engineer who has returned to his small home town in Arizona. What he does not know is that a barrel of toxic waste had spilled into a pond near a spider farm. Newly contamined crickets were then fed to the spiders on the farm and the arachnids grew to enormous sizes. The spider collection then escaped into the nearby mines and continued to grow and feed on animals (and humans).
Arquette's character soon realizes the enormity of the situation as the spiders began to emerge from the mines. He helps lead the citizens into a nearby mall where they put up a strong fight against the creatures. When that proves too difficult, the survivors move to the mines where they know there is an ample amount of explosive gas. After a last confrontation with the female matriarch of the spiders, the mines explode and collapse and the town is saved.
5. "Deep Blue Sea" (1999)
The movie centers around a team of scientists in an underwater laboratory. Dr. Susan McCallister (played by Saffron Burrows) is experimenting with three mako sharks to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease and, in doing so, illegally altered the animals' brains. The company sends an executive (played by Samuel L. Jackson) to investigate some mishaps. Soon the sharks display their intelligence and aggression by hunting down humans and flooding the complex in an attempt to sink it.
The few survivors of the laboratory attempt to find a way to the surface while trying to evade the predators. Soon the executive is killed but two of the sharks are also killed in the melee. Then Dr. McCallister sacrifices herself (by cutting her hand as bait) to allow two remaining employees to escape. Finally at the surface, the duo manage to harpoon the last mutated shark and kill it with an explosive charge. They are then rescued by a passing boat as the facility completes its last collapse into the depths.
6. "Them!" (1954)
James Whitmore stars as a police officer in New Mexico who is investigating a series of strange incidents including a destroyed travel trailer, giant unidentified prints in the sand, and a catatonic young girl. Soon he comes across more deaths and hears a strange high-pitched noise. He then calls in help in the form of an FBI agent (played by James Arness).
Joined by some entomologists, it is soon discovered that the cause of the attacks was an army of gigantic, carnivorous ants, mutated by radiation from the first atomic bomb test. They are able to destroy the ant colony with gas bombs, but realize two queen ants had escaped. One is discovered and killed on a freighter on the ocean and the other tracked to the sewer systems of Los Angeles, California. The heroes track down the predators, rescue two young boys (Whitmore's character having been killed in the action), and use flamethrowers to destroy the queen and her new nest. A final cautionary note in the movie warns the audience about what other things will occur due to the use of nuclear weapons.
7. "Night of the Wild" (2015)
This 2015 Syfy horror/science fiction film follows the residents of a small town who are terrorized when a meteorite crashes nearby and causes all the dogs to turn into vicious, bloodthirsty killers. It starts when a mysterious green meteor crash lands on a small farm town spreading its meteorites. Rob Morrow stars as one of the people in the nearby town who suddenly realize their pet dogs are being horrifically transformed.
The various dogs begin to form packs and turn on their human owners, attacking and killing people throughout the community. Rob's character teams up with a girl whose dog, Shep, is immune to the meteorite effects. They try to figure out ways to get out of the town. After much battling with vicious pets, the duo manage to escape on a small plane whle the rest of the town is overrun with snarling, vicious, rabid-looking dogs.
8. "Komodo" (1999)
The movie's premise starts with the idea that in the 1980s part of a black market shipment of exotic lizard eggs was tossed into a toxic swamp in North Carolina. Years later, a young Patrick Connally (played by Kevin Zegers) witnesses his dog being attacked and eaten by a creature on a nearby island. Traumatized, he blocks out the memory. Years later, his psychiatrist, Dr. Juno (played by Jill Hennessey) suggests he join her and his aunt back at the island to deal with his shock.
During this trip, they discover the creatures are massive, mutated Komodo dragon lizards. His aunt is killed but he and the doctor escape. They join up with a few more people from the area, including a local biologist. They also learn that the oil company who caused the swamp to be toxic was aware of the dragons and was trying to cover it up. Several people (and giant lizards) die as they continue to clash on the island. Finally, the last Komodo is killed when a flare gun is utilized on it. Patrick and his doctor return to the mainland safely.
9. "Kaw" (2007)
Following in the footsteps of the classic movie "The Birds", the film is about a town attacked by hostile birds (in this case it is ravens). The cause of the problem was a Mennonite family's herd of cattle that became infected with mad cow disease. The farmer kept this fact to himself and as the infected cows die, ravens eat the carcasses and become infected and mutated. Soon they turn their agggression and appetite for flesh towards the local town.
The sheriff (played by Sean Patrick Flanery) is on his final day before moving. Unfortunately for him, this is the time the ravens attack. He joins many others, including the town doctor, in attempting to escape the birds and eventually barricades people in the diner. Meanwhile, others in the area, including people in a school bus, are dying at the hands of the birds. Back at the diner, a citizen of the town sacrifices himself by creating an explosion. This, and the fact the ravens are succombing to the disease, ends the birds' rampage. At the end, it is hinted that more birds have, in fact, survived.
10. "Silent Predators" (1999)
This movie, about an infestation of mutated rattlesnakes in California, explains that years earlier a truck of exotic rattlesnakes crashed. The snakes escaped and bred with local rattlers, creating a race of highly aggressive, deadly snakes. About 15 years later, a local developer (played by Jack Scalia) dynamites a hillside which causes the snakes to angrily pour out by the thousands to attack the town.
The town's fire chief named Vic (played by Harry Hamlin) recognizes the impending disaster and notes that the developer is trying to cover it up. Vic joins up with a local real estate saleswoman and they try to figure out how to stop the slithering mass as more and more people die. They eventually track down the snake's nest to an old mine shaft. Vic is able to utilize an old dynamite setup to collapse the walls and entomb the deadly vipers.
