Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Flight of the Navigator', a boy was transported eight years into the future by this robot, who was also a spaceship.

Answer: Trimaxion

Trimaxion (or 'Max' as he was known through most of the movie) was a fun-loving, playful and compassionate robot, ultimately returning the boy to the point in time that he left, after seeing the affect it had had on his family. Max was voiced by Paul Reubens, who is most famously known as the playful Pee-Wee Herman.
2. In 'Short Circuit', military robot 'five' was subject to a power surge and developed a consciousness. It moved in with Ally Sheedy and adopted this name.

Answer: Johnny Five

Johnny Five confounded scientists repeatedly throughout the movie, all of whom assumed that his adaptable behaviour was the result of highly sophisticated programming, and nothing more. He was ultimately determined to be alive due to his grasp of abstract concepts, such as art and humor (and was granted US Citizenship at the end of the sequel).

He was voiced by Tim Blaney, whose most recognizable other character was Frank, the dog from the 'Men in Black' movies.
3. This robot, from the movie 'Transformers' (the 2007 Michael Bay version), was the subject of a long running government cover-up called Project Iceman.

Answer: Megatron

Megatron, the evil leader of the Decepticons, was left out of most of the movie, except as the basis for most of human technology up until that point (microwaves, velcro, etc...). He was voiced by Hugo Weaving. Between 1999 and 2003, Weaving was involved in two blockbuster trilogies at the same time - 'The Lord of the Rings', where he played Elrond, King of the elves at Rivendell, and 'The Matrix' where he played the nefarious Agent Smith.
4. In the movie 'Toys', Robin Williams played a man whose uncle was turning his father's toy factory into a military machine factory. Joan Cusack played his father's greatest toy creation - a robot sister. What was her name?

Answer: Alsatia

Alsatia Zevo was rather quirky throughout most of the movie, and until it was revealed that she was, in fact, a robot, it seemed as though she was an adult with the mind of a child. This movie was nominated for two Oscars - one for set direction and one for costume design.

Much of the overall visual theme of the sets in this movie was based on the works of French surrealist artist Rene Magritte.
5. 'The Last Starfighter' found a trailer park handyman living out the happenings of a video game in an intergalactic war. While he was up in space, this robot took his place on Earth.

Answer: Betaunit

Lance Guest played both Alex Rogan, the last starfighter (hence the movie's title), and the beta unit, which was basically a robot clone. The beta units were used all over the galaxy as 'beta' versions of the starfighters, while they were at war.
6. In 'Star Trek: First Contact', The Borg Queen referred to Captain Jean-Luc Picard by his Borg name; the name given to him by her after his assimilation during the TV show. What was it?

Answer: Locutus

The Borg promised a life of enlightenment and peace through an everlasting pursuit for perfection. The cost of that life, however, was eternal compliance and submission (read: slavery and indenture) and the loss of identity. Locutus was allowed to keep his identity, during the brief period of his assimilation, so that the Queen would have an intellectual equal as a companion. Jean-Luc Picard (and by extension Locutus) were played by Patrick Stewart, who as many have argued, was the perfect choice to also play Charles Xavier (Professor X) in the 'X-Men' trilogy.
7. While investigating a distress beacon on a remote planet in 'Alien', this robot attempted to follow company orders to kill Sigourney Weaver (which he tried to do with a rolled up magazine).

Answer: Ash

This robot, who had his head broken almost completely off (in a rather creepy scene - he still attacked them while his head dangled from his back), was played by Ian Holm. Holm has played such memorable roles in recent film as priest Vito Cornelius in 'The Fifth Element' and Bilbo Baggins in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
8. The mysterious scientist in 'The Black Hole' (the Disney version from 1979) had this robot as his companion. He was a giant, sinister-looking red robot who was always watching.

Answer: Maximillian

Maximillian, it was revealed, was an evil robot. In fact, at the end of the movie, we saw Professor Reinhardt's eyes looking out through the shell of Maximillian (the Maximillian shell) as it overlooked what appeared to be Hell. The mysterious scientist, Professor Reinhardt, was played by Maximillian Schell (get it, 'Maximillian shell'?).

The fact that his robot companion's name was Maximillian was purely an amusing coincidence. The naming of the robot and the casting of the scientist were done independently of one another.
9. In 'Transformers: The Movie' (the animated version from the 80s) this planet, which ate other planets, transformed into the largest robot in the known universe.

Answer: Unicron

Unicron was inordinately powerful - powerful enough even to magically rebuild Megatron into Galvatron. The full extent of his knowledge, power and abilities were never fully explained. This was mainly because Hot Rod destroyed him from the inside, with The Matrix of Leadership, during his transformation into Rodimus Prime, leaving only Unicron's head to float through space forever. Unicron was voiced by Orson Welles. Yes, THE Orson Welles.

The same man who panicked America in 1938 with a realistic performance of H.G. Wells' 'The War of the Worlds'.
10. The androids Zhora, Leon, Pris and Roy were escapees who had to be destroyed in the movie 'Blade Runner' (although why was somewhat of a philosophical issue). Roy learned the value of life just as he was about to die, and saved his hunter's life. These androids, collectively, were known as _________.

Answer: Replicants

The Replicants (who were unwittingly and unfortunately dangerous) only wanted to be given a chance at normal life. It was because they didn't understand the value of human life that created the need for the destruction of deviant models. Roy's final understanding of this, at the end of the movie, cemented Rick Deckard's (the hunter, known as a 'Blade Runner') decision NOT to destroy the only remaining Replicant, Rachel (the secretary at the Tyrell Corporation).

It is also debatable to some whether Deckard himself was a Replicant.

The movie was adapted from the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' by Philip K. Dick. The director, Ridley Scott, didn't read the book until after the movie had been released.
