"The Adventures of Pinocchio" was written by Carlo Collodi in 1883. The story is about a woodcutter who makes a puppet out of magical wood that can talk and move on its own and is named Pinocchio. The puppet goes on a series of adventures, although he doesn't always listen to wiser characters like the Talking Cricket. Each time Pinocchio lies, his nose grows. Having learned his lessons, he is then turned into a real boy at the end of the book. The animated Disney movie "Pinocchio" was made in 1940 and would win an Oscar award for the song "When You Wish Upon a Star".
"The Jungle Book" was written by Rudyard Kipling and first published in 1894. The story follows Mowgli, an Indian boy or "man-cub", who is raised by wolves. He befriends characters like a bear and a panther while trying to avoid the evil tiger. As he grows up, he comes to realize that he belongs with humans and must say good-bye to his friends. In the meantime, he helps kill the tiger to keep the jungle safe. The original animated film "The Jungle Book" was released on October 18, 1967. It was produced by Walt Disney Productions and was the last animated feature film Walt Disney himself personally supervised.
"Peter Pan" was written by J.M. Barrie and the novel came out in 1911. The story revolves around a mischievous, flying boy named Peter Pan who visits the children of the Darling family. With the help of a fairy named Tinker Bell, they all go on an adventure to Neverland where they meet mermaids, pirates, and Native Americans. After Peter rescues the children from the pirates, he flies them home as they miss their parents. Peter, himself, refuses to grow up and returns to his magic land. The animated Disney movie "Peter Pan" was released in 1953. While not a big hit at first, it is considered to be one of the most well known Disney films of all time.
"Charlotte's Web" was written and first published in 1952 by E. B. White. The story is about a pig named Wilbur who befriends a a wise and kind barn spider named Charlotte. Worried that he might be slaughtered, Wilbur begs Charlotte for help. She then weaves words into webs (like "Some Pig") which fascinates the community. Wilbur earns a special prize at the fair which saves him. Unfortunately, Charlotte dies but Wilbur protects her eggs until the baby spiders are born. An animated movie based on the book was produced by Hanna-Barbera and released in the United States on March 1, 1973. It made an amazing comeback in 1994 when it surprised the marketplace by becoming one of the best-selling VHS titles of the year, 21 years after its first premiere.
"Winnie-the-Pooh" is a collection of children's stories by British author A.A. Milne, first published in 1926. The story is about a stuffed bear named Winnie and his stuffed animal friends that include Piglet, Eeyore the donkey, Rabbit, a tiger named Tigger, an owl, and a kangaroo with her son. They all belong to a little boy named Christopher Robin and all have their own unique personalities. They go on a series of adventures through the woods in which they all live. The book's movie first aired on February 4, 1966, with the Disney animated short "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree". This theatrical feature was released by Walt Disney Productions and was based on the first two chapters of the book.
"How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" is a children's book written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) and published in 1957. The Grinch lives in a cave above Who-ville. He is very grumpy and determined to stop Christmas from the people in the village. On Christmas Eve he and his dog, dressed as Santa and a reindeer, go into town. They steal gifts, trees, food, and anything else that reminds them of Christmas. He is shocked to find the citizens are not sad but still celebrate the holiday and his heart grows as finds true joy himself. The original made-for-TV animated movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" first aired on December 18, 1966. Throughout the years, it has since been regarded as a Christmas classic.
"The Sword In The Stone" is a classic 1938 fantasy children's novel by British writer T. H. White that chronicles the boyhood and education of the future King Arthur. It is about the adventures of an orphaned boy named Arthur, or Wart. A wizard named Merlyn teaches him about life while turning him into different animals to gain their perspective. At the end of the tale, Wart pulls out a sword from a stone in London, which proves he is the true future King of England. The animated movie "The Sword In The Stone" was widely released in 1963. The Disney film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of Music.
"The Hundred and One Dalmatians" is a children's novel written by Dodie Smith and published in 1956. The story features a pair of Dalmatians named Pongo and Missis who live with the Dearlys. Right after the pair has puppies, Mrs. Dearly's friend, Cruella de Vil, comes by and is fascinated with their fur. After the puppies are weaned, they are kidnapped. Various animals help the dog pair trek across the land to find the missing puppies in a rundown house. They find that Cruella de Vil was at the house and has 99 total puppies she was going to use for their fur. All the dogs are rescued and the Dearlys adopted all 101 dalmatians. The animated movie "101 Dalmatians" was released on January 25, 1961. It was a huge financial success for Disney Productions.
"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is a novel written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, first published in 1865. It is about a young girl named Alice who follows a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. She finds herself in Wonderland where she meets a variety of characters including a grinning cat who disappears, a dodo bird who races, and a caterpillar who smokes. She is also involved in a court trial with various playing cards. The book ends when Alice awakes from a dream. The move "Alice In Wonderland" was released by Disney in 1951. The new medium of television was used to promote the animated movie.
"Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" is a 1971 children's science fiction and fantasy novel by American author Robert C. O'Brien that was a Newbery Medal winner. The story centers around a field mouse named Mrs. Frisby who must find help to move her home and children in the spring. She finds aid from an unlikely source. It is a colony of rats who are incredibly intelligent due to the fact they were escapees from a science lab. In return, she helps save the rats when she learns of the farmer's plot to kill them. "The Secret of NIMH" is a critically acclaimed 1982 animated fantasy film that is based on the book. The film has garnered a cult following as it addresses heavy themes such as loss, fear, animal experimentation, and moral responsibility in a way that was unusual for a 1980s animated film.
