Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tragically, Geppetto's son Carlo dies in 1916. What causes his death?

Answer: A bomb dropped by a warplane

Carlo is described as being 10 years old when he died after a bomb dropped from a warplane exploded on impact with the church that he was in. His father, Geppetto, was just outside the church and was not injured physically but the death of his son was devastating.

The narrator, Sebastian J. Cricket, explains that the plane wasn't even dropping the bomb to target the church but rather to lighten the ballast.
2. What does Geppetto's son, Carlo, find a perfect example of that would later be buried near his grave?

Answer: Pine cone

Geppetto and Carlo are shown playing outside and Carlo shows his father a pine cone that he had found. Geppetto tells him that the pine cone is missing scales and he should search for a perfect one. Carlo finds the perfect pine cone the day he is killed when the church is bombed.

The pine cone actually rolls out of the church to Geppetto who buries it next to Carlo's grave. The pine cone would eventually become the pine tree that Geppetto would use to make Pinocchio.
3. What important church structure was Geppetto working on at the time of his son Carlo's death?

Answer: Crucifix

Geppetto and Carlo are shown working on the church's crucifix. The crucifix is built of wood and is nearly finished except for an arm and painting when Carlo died. After Carlo's death the crucifix remained unfinished until Pinocchio came along and helped Geppetto complete it.
4. A local leader of the town implores Geppetto to put Pinocchio in school and later enlist him in the Italian army. What is this character who had a son named Candlewick called?

Answer: Podesta

"Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio" begins in Northern Italy in 1916 and then jumps forward in time to the 1930s. The leader of Geppetto's town is the Podesta who is a representative of the Fascist party. The Podesta believes that Pinocchio can be a military asset to Italy because Pinocchio doesn't die like a human boy would.

The Podesta's son, Candlewick, is initially a bully to Pinocchio but eventually they become friends.
5. What does Geppetto call Pinocchio that causes him to run away and join the carnival?

Answer: Burden

Early in the film Sebastian J. Cricket tells Pinocchio that a burden is something that causes hardship or distress and is difficult to live with. When Geppetto calls Pinocchio a burden he tells Sebastian J. Cricket that he knows Geppetto was serious because his nose didn't grow when he said it. Sebastian J. Cricket tries to cheer Pinocchio up telling him that sometimes people say things they don't mean but Pinocchio decides to run away from home.
6. Pinocchio ends up getting lured to perform in a puppet show by a man that offers him hot chocolate and popcorn. Who is this man, whose name means fox in Italian?

Answer: Count Volpe

Count Volpe shares characteristics of both the Mangiafuoco (puppet master) and the Fox from the original 1883 novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. Similar to the character Stromboli from prior film adaptations of "Pinocchio", Count Volpe is only concerned about making money and not the welfare of those in his show.

He impels Pinocchio to sign a contract to work for him and then lies about distributing half of the profits to Geppetto. Count Volpe is voiced by the multi-Academy Award winning actor Christoph Waltz.
7. What happens to Pinocchio just before he goes to the underworld for the first time?

Answer: He is hit by a car.

Initially Pinocchio cannot die but rather he goes into an underworld and has to wait until a blue sand hourglass completely fills at the bottom before he goes back to Earth. Pinocchio's first trip to the underworld takes place after he is hit by a car after he is pulled in different directions by Geppetto and Count Volpe who are fighting over who gets to keep him. Everyone thinks that Pinocchio is dead while they are at the hospital with him and they are amazed when he wakes up unharmed. Pinocchio is essentially sessile on Earth while he is in the underworld.
8. The puppet master has an assistant named Spazzatura who will eventually turn on him to help Pinocchio. What kind of animal is Spazzatura?

Answer: Monkey

The monkey Spazzatura is formerly the main attraction for the puppet master Count Volpe. However, once Pinocchio comes along Spazzatura is out of the limelight and he resents Pinocchio. In time though Spazzatura realizes Count Volpe is evil and he saves Pinocchio from being burned at the stake.
9. Where do Pinocchio and Spazzatura reunite with Geppetto and Sebastian J. Cricket?

Answer: The belly of a giant dogfish

"Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" has different names for characters than the famous 1940 Disney film version of "Pinocchio". The monstrous sea creature in Guillermo del Toro's version is simply called a giant dogfish rather than Monstro as he had been called in previous films. Pinocchio and Spazzatura fall into the water and try to paddle away from the dogfish but are swallowed up by it.

However, they are happy to be reunited with Geppetto and Sebastian J. Cricket who had similarly been swallowed up by the dogfish while on a boat.

They end up escaping out of the dogfish's blowhole and when Pinocchio detonates a naval mine in its mouth.
10. Sebastian J. Cricket ends up saving Pinocchio's life when he uses his wish to make him come back. Who had previously granted Sebastian J. Cricket a wish contingent on him looking after Pinocchio to the best of his abilities?

Answer: Wood Sprite

Near the beginning of the film Sebastian J. Cricket is in a tree that Geppetto chops down to use to make Pinocchio. At night Sebastian J. Cricket sees several wood spirits combine to form a blue fairy called the Wood Sprite. The Wood Sprite gives life to Pinocchio and tells Sebastian J. Cricket that he can have one wish if he looks after Pinocchio and teaches him how to be good.

At first Sebastian J. Cricket wants to use this wish to become a famous novelist but in the end he uses it to bring Pinocchio back to life.

The film ends with Geppetto, Spazzaturra and Sebastian J. Cricket all having died while Pinocchio is still his youthful and cheerful self.
