I have been a movie fan ever since I can remember. While I am no expert on the technical aspects of film production, I do have an appreciation for the work of certain film directors. Here are some of my favorites; match the director to the film clues.

Answer: John Ford

John Ford was born in Maine in 1894 and began working in the film industry in 1914. He directed his first film in 1917. Ford was known for his wide-angle shots, location filming, and using a "stable" of actors in most of his films from the 1930s on. His last film was the 1966 movie "7 Women". John Ford died in 1973.
2. This famous British director made "Rebecca" (1940), "Shadow of a Doubt" (1943), "Rear Window" (1954), and "The Birds" (1963).

Answer: Alfred Hitchcock

Born in England in 1899, Alfred Hitchcock began his film career as a title card designer and directed his first film in 1925. Known as the "Master of Suspense", Hitchcock moved to Hollywood in 1939 and was very successful, although, while nominated several times, he never won an Oscar for Best Director. Alfred Hitchcock died in 1980.

Answer: Blake Edwards

Born William Blake Crump in Oklahoma in 1922, Edwards was an actor in the 1940s before turning to writing and directing in the 1950s. He directed his first film, "Bring Your Smile Along", in 1955. Known mostly for his comedy films, Edwards also directed several acclaimed dramas. He was married to actress Julie Andrews from 1969 until his death in 2010.

Born in New York City in 1928, Kubrick was a photographer for "Look" magazine when he began making his own short films in the early 1950s. Kubrick only made 13 feature films in his 47 year career, as he was known for his meticulous style and filming scenes many times from different angles. Kubrick moved to England in 1961 to get away from Hollywood. Stanley Kubrick passed away in 1999.

Born in Massachusetts in 1881, Cecil B. DeMille began his career on the stage. Moving to Hollywood in the early days of the motion picture industry, DeMille directed the first full length feature film, "The Squaw Man", in 1914. DeMille directed some 70 films in his career, most of them in the silent era.

He was acknowledged as one of the pioneers of Hollywood and is still the most commercially successful director ever. DeMille died in 1959.

Born in Surrey, England in 1908, Lean broke into the film industry as an editor in the early 1930s. He directed his first film, "In Which We Serve", in 1942. Lean was a leading director in British cinema throughout the 1940s, and then began making big-budget international films from 1955. Lean was admired by many later directors for his total knowledge of the art of filmmaking and his cinematography. David Lean passed away in 1991.

Answer: Quentin Tarantino

Born in Tennessee in 1963, Quentin Tarantino moved to Los Angeles with his divorced mother in 1966. A self-described "film nut" from an early age, he worked as a film usher and at a video store, where he impressed the customers with his knowledge of movies and the industry.

He wrote his first screenplay at age 14. Tarantino's first feature film was 1992's "Reservoir Dogs", a violent tale of a robbery gone wrong. Known for his violent films, he is one of the most popular directors of his generation.

Born in Tokyo in 1910, Akira Kurosawa was a painter before entering the Japanese film industry in 1936 as a scriptwriter and assistant director. He directed his first film in 1943, and his 1948 film "Drunken Angel" began his 15 film collaboration with actor Toshiro Mifune. Kurosawa was the first Japanese director whose work was popularized in the West. Akira Kurosawa died in 1998.

Norman Jewison was born in Toronto in 1926. After World War II service in the Royal Canadian Navy, Jewison attended the University of Toronto, where he began writing and directing in the theater. He went to England in 1949 and worked on children's shows before returning to Canada to work for the CBC. Jewison was hired by NBC in New York in 1958, and directed his first feature film in 1962. Jewison is well known for addressing social and political issues in his films. Jewison retired in 2003.

Born in England in 1937, Scott worked for the BBC after college as a set designer. He later directed episodes of television series, as well as commercials, along with his brother, Tony Scott. He directed his first feature film, "The Duellists", in 1977. Scott is known for his visual style and strong female characters in his work.
