1. Who directed 'The Royal Tenenbaums', 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'?

Answer: Wes Anderson

'The Royal Tenenbaums' came out in 2001 and told the story of three child geniuses and their rather unusual relationship with their father. The stars included Gene Hackman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Owen Wilson, who co-wrote the script with Anderson. 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' was a 2009 film based on the book by Roald Dahl and employed the voice talents of George Clooney and Michael Gambon, among many others.

'The Grand Budapest Hotel' starred Ralph Fiennes as the concierge of the hotel in the title. The 2014 film featured a host of well known actors, including Tilda Swinton and Jude Law. Owen Wilson appeared in all three of the films named in the question.
2. Which director brought us 'Brief Encounter', 'Oliver Twist' and 'Ryan's Daughter'?

Answer: David Lean

David Lean was an English director who also brought us 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1957), 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962) and 'Doctor Zhivago' (1965). 'Brief Encounter' dates from 1945 and starred Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson as a couple who came close to an affair. 'Oliver Twist', an adaptation of the novel by Charles Dickens, starred Alec Guinness as Fagin, and came out in 1948.

'Ryan's Daughter' featured Robert Mitchum, John Mills and Trevor Howard (again) and was set in Ireland. It was released in 1970.
3. Who do we have to thank for directing 'Mars Attacks!', 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' and 'Ed Wood'?

Answer: Tim Burton

'Mars Attacks!' brought together Glenn Close, Jack Nicholson and Pierce Brosnan, with a host of other stars, in 1996. It was a black comedy about a Martian invasion of Earth. 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' was Burton's first full length film, released in 1985, and starred Paul Reubens as Pee-wee Herman searching for his bicycle.

Johnny Depp starred in the 1994 film 'Ed Wood', which told the story of the 1950s film director of that name.
4. 'Sex, Lies and Videotape', 'Traffic' and 'Haywire' were all directed by which of these?

Answer: Steven Soderbergh

The 1989 film 'Sex, Lies and Videotape' starred James Spader and Andie MacDowell and was the first to bring Soderbergh to public attention. 'Traffic', from 2000, was a crime story about the drug trade, told from several points of view. The film starred Michael Douglas, Benicio del Toro and James Brolin.

'Haywire' came out in 2011 and was a thriller starring Gina Carano and Michael Fassbender.

Soderbergh's other films include 'Erin Brockovich' (2000) and 'Ocean's Eleven' (2001) as well as the follow up 'Ocean' films.
5. Who directed 'Wild Strawberries', 'Fanny and Alexander' and 'Summer Interlude'?

Bergman also directed 'The Seventh Seal' (1957), which starred Max von Sydow and featured a famous scene of a chess match with Death.
6. 'Eraserhead', 'Wild at Heart' and 'Mulholland Drive' were all the work of which director?

Answer: David Lynch

'Mulholland Drive' featured Naomi Watts and Laura Harring, and was written by Lynch originally for television. It was released as a feature film in 2001. Other films directed by David Lynch are 'The Elephant Man' (1980) and 'Blue Velvet' (1986).
7. 'Heavenly Creatures', 'King Kong' and 'The Lovely Bones' were directed by which man?

'Heavenly Creatures' was based on a true story, with Jackson writing the script. It marked Kate Winslet's 1994 big screen debut and told the story of two girls who murder the mother of one of them. The 'King Kong' directed by Jackson was the 2005 version, starring Naomi Watts and Jack Black. 'The Lovely Bones' was based on the novel by Alice Sebold and was released in 2009. Saoirse Ronan plays the part of a girl who has been murdered.

Of course, Jackson is probably best known for the films made from Tolkien's works 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit', but that would have been too easy.
