Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 'high flying' actress started her show biz career on television in the '60s, 'surfing the waves', so to speak. She easily translated that experience onto the silver screen, tackling comedy and drama with equal success, winning Best Actress Oscars for "Norma Rae" (1979) and "Places in the Heart" (1984). Her directing experience also kicked off in projects for television but in 2000, she directed the movie "Beautiful". Who is this talented actress turned director?

Answer: Sally Field

Seeing Sally Field mature from her start on "Gidget" and "The Flying Nun" to playing Mary Todd Lincoln in "Lincoln" (2012) has been a delightful journey to watch. She made us laugh in "Soapdish" (1991) and played a perfect straight woman to the insanely funny Robin Williams in "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993). I think she was extraordinary when she played a mother fighting for her children, as she did in "Steel Magnolias" (1989), "Not Without My Daughter" (1991) and my personal favourite, "Eye for an Eye" (1996). "Beautiful" (2000) was about the Miss America pageant and what some of the contestants were prepared to do to win the coveted title.
2. This beautiful Hollywood star made her first movie appearance in 1931 and her last in 1978. Between those years she racked up 105 acting credits (59 in film). Her more famous movies included "High Sierra" (1941) and "The Bigamist" (1953), which she also directed. She was very much a pioneer among female directors, with 41 directing credits, seven of which were in film. Who was this ground-breaker?

Answer: Ida Lupino

Ida Lupino was born in 1918 in England and passed away in 1995. Among her many directing credits are "Hard, Fast and Beautiful" (1951) "The Bigamist" (1953) and "The Hitchhiker" (1953). The bulk of her directing was on television programs. Her interest in directing grew out of being bored on set, where she felt that someone else got to make all the interesting decisions.

It really blossomed when she was suspended by the studio for turning down a role, and used that time to hang around sets watching directors in action.

Her first directing opportunity came up when the director working on "Not Wanted" (1949), a film that Lupino was co-producer of, had a heart attack. Lupino stepped in to complete the film.
3. This Hollywood beauty is known as much for her large brood and humanitarian efforts as she is for her acting. She is no stranger to controversy though, particularly when she hooked up with her co-star, on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (2005). Unfortunately he was married at the time. Who is this mother of many?

Answer: Angelina Jolie

Some of Jolie's more well-known movies include "The Bone Collector" (1999), "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" (2001) and "A Mighty Heart" (2007). She received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for "Girl, Interrupted" (1999).
She has also directed "In the Land of Blood and Honey" (2011).
Jolie has a long history for humanitarian work, much of it focusing on women and children in developing countries. For these efforts she has received many awards, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in November 2013. Recognition of this was made at "The Academy Awards" in 2014.
4. While probably best known onscreen for her role in a sit-com set in the 50s, this actress also made a few movies, including her first onscreen appearance in "The Savage Seven" (1968) and "Hocus Pocus" (1993). Her directing career started with television episodes, but she quickly moved onto directing very successful movies like "Big" (1988). What female director gave us the movie with the immortal line "There's no crying in baseball!" (delivered by Tom Hanks)?

Answer: Penny Marshall

Marshall spent several years as Laverne in "Laverne and Shirley" (1976-1983), which is where most people probably recognize her from. However she is an incredibly talented director who has brought us movies like "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (1986), "Awakenings" (1990), "A League of Their Own)" (1992) (wherein Hanks spoke the quote referenced in the question) and "Riding in Cars with Boys" (2001).
5. This multi-talented songstress has been successful as a recording artist, an actress and a director. Her first onscreen performance was in "Funny Girl" (1968), which won her an Oscar for Best Actress and her directorial debut, about an early 20th century Jewish girl who disguises herself as a male in order to learn, won Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Director. 6. Born in 1971, this daughter of a directing great had her first acting credit as a baby in one of her father's films. Sofia appeared in all three instalments of her father's "Godfather" masterpiece (1972, 1974 and 1990). In the first two she was very young but her performance in the third was critically panned.
Her writing and directing careers have been more successful, and have included movies like "Lost in Translation" (2003), "Marie Antoinette" (2006) and "The Bling Ring" (2013).
She won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "Lost in Translation", which was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. This made her the third generation in her family to win an Oscar.
7. A favourite of Woody Allen's, this actress/director made her first onscreen appearance in "Lovers and Other Strangers" (1970), followed by some appearances on the small screen. After trying her hand at directing for TV, the first, big screen movie she directed was "Unstrung Heroes" (1995). Who is this woman, who played first the girlfriend and then the wife of Michael Corleone?

Answer: Diane Keaton

Keaton seems to specialise in nervous, neurotic women, which makes her perfect for Woody Allen movies. She has played this role to success in movies like "The First Wives Club" (1996), "Something's Gotta Give" (2003) and "Morning Glory" (2010). "Hanging Up" (2000) is another one of the movies that she has directed.
She won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "Annie Hall" (1977).

Answer: Betty Thomas

Betty Thomas played Sgt. Lucy Bates on "Hill Street Blues" (1981 - 1987). While a large part of her directing was initially in television series, she has quite a few successful movie titles to her credit. These include "28 Days" (2000), "I Spy" (2002), "John Tucker Must Die" (2006) and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" (2009).
Thomas' first foray into the entertainment business was in "Second City TV", where she started out as a waitress but soon made her way onstage at the time that Bill Murray was part of the ensemble.
9. Part of an acting dynasty, this little lady made her movie breakthrough at the age of five, playing a little girl who put dress-up clothes on an extra-terrestrial. Drew's grandfather was the legendary John Barrymore.
Barrymore's wild child stage ended up with a suicide attempt and a couple of stays in rehab at the age of 14.
10. This actress started appearing in television shows when seven years old. Her breakthrough role was in 1976, when she played a teenaged prostitute. She turned her hand to directing in 1988, directing her first movie, "Little Man Tate", in 1991. Who is this actress, with a history of playing strong, female roles?

Answer: Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster's performance as a teenaged prostitute came in "Taxi Driver" (1976). In "The Accused" (1988) she took on the attitude of rape being the woman's fault if they dressed and behaved provocatively, a role for which she won a Best Actress Oscar. Her second Oscar (also for Best Actress) came for "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991).
She directed several TV episodes before directing the films "Home for the Holidays" (1995) and "The Beaver" (2011).
