My name's Forrest, Forrest Gump. I grew up in Greenbow, Alabama with my Mama, who always told me I wasn't dumb, just different. I had trouble walking when I was little, but once I started running, I never stopped. That's how I met - who became my best friend, and who I loved from the moment we met. She had a hard life, but she was always kind to me. Mama taught me all sorts of things, like how life is like a - you never know what you're gonna get.

When I got older, I went to college on a scholarship. I played so well, they made me an All-American, and I got to meet President at the White House. He gave me a , which I liked a lot.

After college, I joined the Army and went to . I made a good friend named , who loved shrimp, and I saved during a battle. They gave me a , and I met President , who was curious about my injury (I showed him my buttocks).

After the war, I got real good at and played for the Army team. They sent me to , and when I came back, I met President , who gave me a . Later, I started a shrimping business like my army buddy always dreamed of. It was hard at first, but after a big storm, we caught so many shrimp we became rich. I gave a lot of the money away and even invested in a fruit company called Apple. Lieutenant Dan became my partner, and he got new legs made of titanium.

One day, I just felt like running. So I ran across the country - back and forth, over and over, until I didn't feel like it anymore. Jenny came back into my life for a while, and she told me I had a son - and that he was smart, real smart. Jenny got sick and passed away, but I got to raise our boy. He's the best part of my life. I walk him to the bus stop every day, just like Mama used to do for me.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Even though Forrest was the focus of the story, it was the people in his life and how he interacted with them and how they were affected by him that made the story so poignant.

Jenny was the love of his life, for so long unrequited, and in the end she truly appreciated his steadfast devotion. And of course, little Forrest, Jr. was the ultimate result of that relationship, along with Jenny's trust in Forrest to take on the responsibility of raising him.

Bubba and Lieutenant Dan had different outcomes from their time in the military, but Forrest stayed true to his word regarding them. Bubba's dream of a shrimping business was realized through Forrest's hard work and some good fortune, and at the same time, Forrest's belief in Lt. Dan helped Lt. Dan believe in himself.

Forrest's single-minded effort to just 'go for it' with whatever he tried (football, ping pong, running) drew accolades and followers, even though it was never about that. When he was recognized for his different accomplishments, he was honored at the highest levels (by various US presidents), and his innocent naivete also brought about some laughs for the audience in those instances.

In many ways, "Forrest Gump" shows that anyone can achieve the American Dream, and that it isn't ambition or even intelligence that does it, but sincerity, hard work, and heart.

"Forrest Gump" originated as a novel by Winston Groom, published in 1986. The story sparked immediate interest in Hollywood, and Groom was contracted to produce a script for a screenplay. Unfortunately, circumstances delayed that potential production... the story was considered too chaotic, including Gump becoming a professional wrestler and an astronaut, and on top of things, another story with a savant character came out in 1988 - "Rain Man". The story was shelved by Warner Bros.

In the early 1990s, Eric Roth was hired to rewrite the script, changing the story to be more optimistic and less satirical... and a *little* less crazy in its scope of activities. After another rejection by Columbia Pictures, the project was picked up by Paramount in 1992. Even then, it was a challenge to get things going, as Ivan Reitman, Penny Marshall and Terry Gilliam all turned down directing the film, leaving (the excellent) Robert Zemeckis (of "Back to the Future" fame) to take up the reins.

The film was given a small budget of $55 million, which ended up being another obstacle, but Zemeckis and star Tom Hanks both ended up deferring some of their salaries to help keep the costs down (in exchange for a share of future potential profits). In the end, the efforts to produce "Forrest Gump" were well repaid as the movie was lauded with 13 Academy Award nominations, winning six of them - Best Picture, Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay (Eric Roth), Best Film Editing (Arthur Schmidt), and Best Visual Effects (Ken Ralston, George Murphy, Stephen Rosenbaum, Allen Hall).
