Link, our hero, is living a simple life in Ordon Village at the beginning of "Twilight Princess", herding goats, chopping wood, and keeping up with practicing his sword techniques. Sadly, this idyllic life does not last long.
Returning to the village after a day's work, Link finds his village under attack, and the children have been taken. Riding his trusty steed Epona, Link gives chase, entering the woods shrouded in twilight and falling to a shadow beast. When our hero awakes, he finds himself transformed into a wolf and chained in the dungeon of Hyrule Castle.
That's when the imp-like Midna appears, a member of the Twili race from the Twilight Realm. In return for his promise to aid her in her quest to defeat Lord Zant and restore the light to the land, she helps Link escape his chains and the dungeons. The first (major) task? To gather three of the lost relics called Fused Shadows in order to restore the light and save the children.
2. Forest Temple
Link returns to the Faron Woods with Midna to begin his quest. In order to clear the woods of the twilight shroud, Link must find a number of Tears of Light. Once that is accomplished, they are able to explore the Forest Temple, which is a vine-covered ruin replete with monsters and puzzles.
By defeating the boomerang-wielding baboon (Ook), Link takes possession of its weapon, known as the Gale Boomerang. This becomes a useful tool throughout the quest, and enables Link to progress through the Forest Temple until he meets and fights Diababa, a giant plant creature.
With this first 'boss' defeated, Midna is able to claim the first of the three Fused Shadow relics.
3. Goron Mines
En route to finding the second Fused Shadow relic, Link and Midna track the children who were taken from Ordon Village to the Twilight-shrouded Eldin Province in the east. In Kakariko Village, they meet the Light Spirit Eldin who gives Link a Vessel of Light to collect sixteen Tears of Light, which will clear the Twilight from the land.
Link successfully saves the children, and then he and Midna continue north towards the Goron Mines. Unfortunately, Link can't fight his way past the Gorons without some training and help, so he has to return home, where Mayor Bo teaches him Sumo Wrestling techniques and gifts him Iron Boots. Returning, Link and Midna climb Death Mountain and gain entrance to the Goron Mines, wrestling Gorons along the way, and then solving puzzles involving magnetic fields and lava flows.
Finally, Link faces and defeats Fyrus, patriarch of the Gorons who has been corrupted by the dark power of the Fused Shadow. With the second relic acquired, there is just one more for Link and Midna to find.
4. Lakebed Temple
Having secured the second Fused Shadow, Link and Midna return to Kakariko Village, ready to continue the quest. Midna hints that the third relic lies within Lanayru province, and the two of them set out for Lake Hylia. When they arrive, they are shocked to discover the lake nearly dry! If they want to access the Lakebed Temple, the lake has to be refilled.
Link travels via cannon to the upper Zora's River and travels upstream to discover that Zora's Domain is frozen solid. Using hot spring water from Death Mountain, Link is able to thaw the ice and restore the flow of water into Lake Hylia.
As before, Link (in wolf form) works to gather Tears of Light to dispel the Twilight in Lanayru province, which give him the opportunity to access the Lakebed Temple as a man. Once inside the Temple, Link faces a mini-boss, Deku Toad, defeating him and acquiring the Clawshot. After many more challenges and puzzles to navigate in the Lakebed Temple, Link finally faces Morpheel. Needing both the Iron Boots and the Clawshot in the fight, Link prevails over Morpheel and claims the third Fused Shadow.
But success ends in tragedy. After completing the quest to find all three Fused Shadow relics, Link and Midna are warped to Lanayru's Spring where they are attacked by Zant, the King of Twilight. The Fused Shadows are stolen by Zant, Midna is severely weakened, and the land is once again covered in Twilight. And to make things worse, Link is reverted to wolf form and cursed with a dark crystal so that he cannot revert to human form. In order to break the curse and to save Midna, they must find Princess Zelda.
5. Arbiter's Grounds
After Princess Zelda sacrifices her power to save Midna's life, she directs Link to find the Master Sword in the Sacred Grove. Journeying there (with some challenges along the way) and acquiring the sword breaks Zant's curse and gives Link the ability to change between his wolf and human forms at will.
Midna explains to Link that Zant's power comes from the Twilight Realm, which is only accessible through the Mirror of Twilight, found in the Mirror Chamber, deep in the Gerudo desert to the west. But to reach the chamber, they must first go to (and through) the Arbiter's Grounds.
Facing quicksand and rotating rooms, Link defeats the mini-boss Death Sword to win the Spinner, which is a necessary tool in defeating the giant skeletal beast, Stallord, By defeating this boss, Linka and Midna gain access to the Mirror Chamber, where they discover that the Mirror of Twilight has been shattered.
The Sages - who guard the Mirror of Twilight - appear and reveal that Zant broke the mirror into four shards. While one of them remained in the chamber, the other three could be found around Hyrule: "one in the snowy mountain heights, one in an ancient grove, and one in the heavens."
The Sages also explain that the true power behind Zant is none other than Link's arch-nemesis, Ganondorf. They tell the history of Ganondorf's failed execution, his banishment, and his connection to Zant.
6. Snowpeak Ruins
With the first of four Mirror Shards already in their possession, Link and Midna set out on their quest to find the other three, already armed with the knowledge of where they must go. To find the first shard 'in the snowy mountain heights', they travel to Zora's Domain in the north, where they are given a clue to the location of a strange beast seen near Snowpeak.
With the assistance of a reekfish, Link tracks the beast, eventually finding Yeto and Yeta (two friendly Yeti) in the Snowpeak Ruins. Yeto invites them in and explains how Yeta is ill from the effects of the Mirror Shard, which they have locked away. With the magic affecting her, Yeta doesn't remember where the key is, and Link is sent on various short missions within the mansion to find it.
When they finally access the bedroom with the Mirror Shard inside, Yeta is transformed by the magic of the shard into the ice-encased Blizzeta, a 'boss' that Link must defeat. Thankfully, when he does so, she reverts to her former self, and is not harmed. Link and Midna claim the second Mirror Shard and set out for the next destination in their quest.
7. Temple of Time
With directions to seek 'an ancient grove', Link and Midna return to the Faron Woods and the Sacred Grove, where Link had previously acquired the Master Sword. When he returns the sword to its pedestal, the Door to Time is revealed, transporting Link back in time to when the Temple of Time was still intact.
The restored Temple of Time gives Link a number of puzzling challenges involving statues and pressure switches, and with the conveniently acquired Dominion Rod, Link has the ability to move the statues and solve the puzzles. The rod also comes in handy when they reach the end of the dungeon and must face Armoghoma, a giant spider creature guarding the third Mirror Shard.
8. Sky Cannon
The directional clue for the last Mirror Shard was "in the heavens". With this in mind, Link and Midna travel to Castle Town and learn of Shad, who is studying ancient Sky Writing. In order to restore power to the Dominion Rod and to access the City in the Sky, Link must engage in a quest to find missing characters from the Sky Writing, which takes him to various different places around Hyrule. Once collected and with the book complete, Shad activates the Sky Cannon in Lake Hylia, launching Link and Midna to the City in the Sky.
Before reaching the boss and the final shard, Link has to navigate a sprawling city of narrow bridges, strong winds, and enemy Aeralfos. To assist his progress, Link acquires the Double Clawshots, allowing him to grapple between platforms.
The final boss of the City in the Sky is the armored dragon Argorok. Link ultimately prevails, and claims the fourth and final Mirror Shard.
9. Mirror Chamber
With all four Mirror Shards collected, Link and Midna return to the Mirror Chamber in the Garuda Desert. When they restore the Mirror of Twilight, the Sages reappear and reveal that Midna is, in fact, the Twilight Princess. With the goal of saving both Hyrule and the Twilight Realm, Link and Midna go through the mirror to her homeland.
They emerge into the Palace of Twilight, which is under Zant's power and shrouded in Dark Fog, which causes Link to change into wolf form again. In order to restore light to the Twilight Realm, Link must collect two glowing orbs (Sols) from the east and west wings of the palace, a battling Phantom Zant for each Sol and fighting of creatures trying to steal the orbs back. With both orbs, Link infuses the Master Sword, transforming it into the Light Sword and allowing Link to change back into human form.
Once they reach Zant's throne room, Link must face the tyrant in a six-phase battle, which recreates the arenas from most of the prior boss fights (Forest Temple, Goron Mines, Lakebed Temple, Arbiter's Grounds, Snowpeak Ruins), and finally finishing in the Throne Room.
10. Hyrule Castle
Having defeated Zant and restored the Twilight Kingdom to the benevolent hand of Midna, the Twilight Princess, Link has one more job to do - take care of the true power behind Zant - Ganondorf.
Midna and Link return to Hyrule and face Ganondorf at Hyrule Castle, which requires multiple stages to complete: Puppet Zelda, Beast Ganon, Horseback duel, and a One-on-one swordfight. Link is ultimately successful in defeating Ganondorf, and in the end, Midna shatters the Mirror of Twilight to prevent such misuse of its power from reoccurring. Sadly, it means that Midna must say goodbye to Link (and Zelda) forever.
