Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A young Indy 'rescues' and loses the Cross of Coronado

In the opening scenes of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989), a young Indiana Jones (portrayed by River Phoenix) is exploring Utah's Arches National Park with a boy scout troop when he stumbles upon a group of men digging up an artifact (later to be revealed as the Cross of Coronado). Young Indy steals the crucifix and is chased by the men until he is able to reach his house. Unfortunately, the men, accompanied by local law enforcement, reclaim the artifact from Indy, claiming that he had stolen it from them (which, technically, he had), and they then hand it off to an unnamed, well-dressed man wearing a Panama hat. This all takes place in the year 1912, 26 years before the events of the rest of the movie (1938).

In the pursuit, the audience had the opportunity to see how Indiana had acquired some of his quirks, including his fear of snakes and his propensity for using a bullwhip, along with how he acquired the famed fedora and that scar on his chin.
2. Indy reclaims the Cross of Coronado from 'Panama Hat'

With the end of the flashback scene, Indy is given the fedora that now (26 years later) reveals an adult Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) as he lifts his head to grin at a tough guy about to hit him. It is 1938, somewhere off the coast of Portugal, and Indy has tracked down the same 'Panama hat' man who had stolen the Cross of Coronado in 1912.

In a wicked storm, Indy fights off the men and secures the crucifix, jumping overboard just before an explosion rocks the boat and it sinks.
3. Indy receives his father's Grail diary

After reacquiring the Cross of Coronado, Indy returns to Barnett College where he teaches, located in Fairfield in upstate New York. The scene with Indy speaking to his class has the wonderfully ironic line where he tells his students to "forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world. We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and "X" never, ever, marks the spot."

With the end of the class and the arrival of his colleague Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott), Indy hands over the Cross of Coronado (for the Spanish collection at the museum). After returning to his office, Indy finds a crowd of students waiting to see him. He avoids everyone and hides himself in his cluttered office, noting a package from Venice, Italy in his mail, waiting for him. He doesn't open it just then, but decides to avoid the crowd of students waiting to see him, and slips out the window. Before he can get too far, however, a car stops and three men get out and surround him.
4. Walter Donovan hires Indy to find Henry Jones, Sr.

The men bring Indy to see a wealthy industrialist and collector of antiquities by the name of Walter Donovan (played by Julian Glover). Donovan shows Indy a stone tablet with an engraving that hints at the existence of the Holy Grail, piquing the archaeologist's interest.

Despite this, Indiana tells Donovan that he has the wrong Dr. Jones, and that he should be speaking to Indy's father, Dr. Henry Jones, whose hobby is Grail lore. This is where the problem lies, however, as Donovan's current project leader...

Indy's father... has gone missing, along with all of his research.
5. Encounter with the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword

Learning that his father has gone missing, Indiana and Marcus Brody go to Henry Jones, Sr.'s home and find it ransacked. Indy realizes at that point that the package he had received was from his father, and he opens it to reveal Henry's research... his 'Grail diary.'

Indy and Brody accept Donovan's request and travel to Venice, where they meet with Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody), who had been working with Indy's father. Together, they retrace Henry's last known actions in the Library of San Barnaba, and Indy is able to find a literal "X" in the floor of the library, marking the entrance to the Venetian catacombs. Leaving Brody behind, Indy and Elsa enter the catacombs and eventually find the tomb of Sir Richard and the other shield marker (matching the partial one that Donovan had shown Indy).

Armed with a charcoal rubbing of the shield inscription, Indy and Dr. Schneider exit the catacombs only to be attacked by a mysterious group of men. After a spirited chase through the canals of Venice, Indy eventually defeats his pursuers, and learns that they are the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword, sworn to protect the secret of the Holy Grail.
6. Indiana rescues his father from a Nazi stronghold

Indy learns from Kazim (of the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword) that his father is being held at the Castle of Brunwald on the Austrian-German border. With this new information, Indy, Elsa and Marcus make their plans. Marcus will begin the search for the path to the Grail, heading to Alexandretta, where Indy's old friend Sallah will meet him. In the meantime, Indy and Elsa will go to the Castle of Brunwald to find (and hopefully rescue) his father.

Upon arrival at the castle, Indy pretends to be a Scottish lord (named Clarence MacDonald) come to "view the tapestries." This subterfuge doesn't last long, and soon Indy is sneaking through the castle, eventually locating his father (portrayed by Sean Connery).

But the rescue becomes complicated by Henry's revelation to Indy that Dr. Schneider is actually working with the Nazis.
7. Marcus Brody meets Sallah, but is captured by the Nazis

While Indy was reuniting with his father at the Castle of Brunwald, Marcus Brody made his way to Alexandretta (the modern-day city of İskenderun in Hatay Province, Turkey, along the Mediterranean coast) where Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) met him. They have barely connected, though, when the two men approach them, claiming to be there to pick Brody up. Sallah realizes immediately that they are Nazi agents, and tries to get Brody to run... unsuccessfully. Within moments, Brody is collected in a truck and driven away, leaving Sallah behind.
8. Hitler signs the Grail diary

Indy and his father eventually manage to make their escape from the Castle of Brunwald, setting a false trail with a motorboat while escaping on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, Elsa managed to confiscate the Grail diary in the process. With this crucial item in the hands of the Nazis, Indy and Henry decide to head for Berlin in the hopes of stopping Elsa before she turns the book over to Hitler.

They arrive in Berlin to see piles of books being burned in the streets with marching troops and Nazi banners flying everywhere. They spot Elsa and confront her, reclaiming the Grail diary from her before she can do anything with it. As the two men attempt to leave, they get swept up in the crowd and Indy comes face-to-face with Hitler. The Fuhrer grabs the diary out of Indy's hand and proceeds to sign his autograph, giving it directly back and not realizing what he was holding.
9. Henry uses his umbrella to bring down a Nazi plane

Henry and Indy board a zeppelin airship to fly to Athens and then to find their way to rejoin Brody and Sallah in Alexandretta, but then the airship begins to turn around. Realizing that they have been discovered, Indy and his father climb down to the biplane attached to the underside of the zeppelin to make their escape. But, of course it isn't that easy, as two other Nazi airplanes attack them.

Indy manages to crash land safely (after his dad accidentally damages their plane with the mounted machine gun), but they are vulnerable on the ground. They are able to steal a motorcar from a local and try to outrun the planes strafing them. A stroke of luck brings one plane down when it crashes into a tunnel, but then the other plan drops a bomb that sends their car into a crater. Once again on foot, Indy and Henry find themselves on a beach at the Mediterranean coast with the plane bearing down on them to finish them off.

With his bag and umbrella still in hand, Henry is inspired to action, using his umbrella to scare a flock of seagulls into the sky, which the Nazi plane collides with, bringing it down.
10. The Holy Grail is discovered in the Temple of the Sun

The last part of the film all takes place in the desert to the south of Alexandretta, as all parties are now trying to follow the clues to the location of the Temple of the Sun - the final resting place of the Holy Grail.

Indy and his father arrive and connect with Sallah before chasing after the Nazi contingent (with Dr. Schneider and Walter Donovan having joined them). Indy is able to rescue Marcus Brody and cause havoc in the process, and the four of them reach the Temple of the Sun to find the enemy already there.

Our heroes are recaptured, and Indy is forced to approach the entrance to the inner caves, where others have already died trying. Remembering the instructions from the Grail diary, Indy is able to successfully traverse the different challenges and arrive at the inner chamber, where he finds the remaining (still alive!) 12th century knight protecting the Holy Grail.

Donovan follows, but is thwarted in the end ("he chose poorly"), and Indy, Henry, Marcus and Sallah all make it out alive. After all is said and done, the Grail and its powers stay behind, unable to cross the threshold out of the temple, which is destroyed behind them.
