Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Vampire" (1957), how did kindly gentle Doctor Paul Beecher get turned into a horrific hairy fanged vampiric beast?

Answer: pills with vampire bat blood in them

A colleague and friend of Dr. Beecher, Dr. Matthew J. Campbell, is experimenting with vampire-bat blood as it relates to aggression. When he dies, Dr. Beecher takes a bottle of pills from his home. Unknown to him, these pills contain an extract from vampire bat blood.

He puts the bottle in his jacket pocket and goes home. He hangs up the jacket and later asks his daughter Betsy to fetch him one of his migraine pills from a bottle in his jacket pocket. She picks the wrong pocket, gives him the wrong pill, and the tablet he takes turns him into the creature.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Doctor Terror's Laboratory

The American film "Terror in the Haunted House" (1958) was originally titled "My World Dies Screaming". The Filipino/American film "Terror Is a Man" (1959) was also known as "Blood Creature", "Creature from Blood Island", The Gory Creatures", "Island of Terror" and "Gore Creature". The working title of "The Unknown Terror" (1957) was "Beyond Terror".

"Dr. Terror's House of Horrors" (1965) stars Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. "Dr. Terror's Gallery of Horrors" (1967) is a compilation of five short films hosted by John Carradine. The book "Dr. Gero's Laboratory of Terror" (Dragon Ball Z, Vol. 5) by Akira Toriyama was published in 2009. Dr. Klomps Laboratory of Terror is a set of three paintable mini-figures sold by BrigadeGames. Miguel A. Delgado and María Santoyo curated an exhibition titled "Terror in the Laboratory: from Frankenstein to Doctor Moreau" at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Madrid, Spain, in 2016.
3. What sort of monster threatened the good people in "The Thing That Couldn't Die" (1958)?

Answer: a man decapitated for sorcery in 1579

Gideon Drew was a member of Sir Francis Drake's crew. He was accused of sorcery, tried before a judge (played by Thomas Browne Henry), convicted, and sentenced to death. The judge ordered that Drew's head be buried separately from his body to prevent resurrection. Once disinterred 400 years later, the head exercised hypnotic powers and compelled others to commit murder for him.
4. Who played game warden Steve Benton in "Attack of the Giant Leeches" (1959)?

Answer: Ken Clark

Ken Clark (1927-2009) stars in "Attack of the Giant Leeches". He portrays a local game warden, Steve Benton, tasked with protecting the fauna of the local swamp. It is because of this charge that he resists proposals to dynamite the swamp in order to kill the giant leeches. Clark, who actually served in the US Navy, was cast as Stewpot, a sailor in "South Pacific" (1958).

He looked great with his shirt off but his baritone voice had to be dubbed by Thurl Ravenscroft. Among his other film credits are "On the Threshold of Space" (1956), "12 to the Moon" (1960), "Tarzana, the Wild Girl" (1969), and "Arena" (1989).
5. In "The Strange World of Planet X" (UK title) "Cosmic Monsters" (USA title) (1957), Brigadier Cartwright wants to shut down Dr. Laird's research until he learns of what military potential?

Answer: the potential to turn metal into powder

Coincident with the ultra-magnetism experiments, the scientists discover that metal alloys outside the experiment chamber are changed molecularly such that they crumble into dust. This same effect is found in a radio antenna thirty feet from the site. The thought is that this "ray" could be projected at enemy vehicles, ships and aircraft causing them to fall instantly apart.
6. "Planet Outlaws" (1953) was a feature film cobbled together from episodes of a theatrical serial.

Answer: True

A twelve-part serial was released to theatres on 2 February 1939. It was titled "Buck Rogers". Each of the twelve episodes had its own title, such as "Tomorrow's World", "The Phantom Plane", "Revolt of the Zuggs", "Bodies Without Minds", and "War of the Planets".

In 1953, director Harry Jacques Revier and Sherman Krellberg edited the 237 minutes of the serial into a single feature-length movie, released to theatres as "Planet Outlaws". It was again edited in 1965 and released to television as "Destination Saturn". Yet another editing called "Buck Rogers" was made in the late 1970s and was released to the video market in the 1990s.
7. "Invaders From Mars" (1953) begins with narration against a background of "the mystery of space". Whose voice contributes that narration?

Answer: actor Arthur Franz

The opening scene is of outer space: stars sparkling on a painted background and marbles invisibly suspended on threads to represent planets. Arthur Franz, who plays astronomer Dr. Stuart Kelston in the movie, says: "The heavens. Once an object of superstition, awe and fear; now a vast region for growing knowledge. ... their greatest mystery the heavens have kept a secret. What sort of life, if any, inhabits these other planets? ... Seeking the answer to this timeless question, forever seeking, is the constant preoccupation of scientists everywhere."
8. For what is Russell Johnson best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Russell Johnson (1924-2014) was born in Pennsylvania, served in the Army Air Corps in WWII and died on Bainbridge Island, Washington. As an actor, he was best known for playing the Professor, Roy Hinkley, on the "Gilligan's Island" television programme and feature-length motion pictures.

His science-fiction credits are few: "It Came from Outer Space" (1953), "This Island Earth" (1955), "Attack of the Crab Monsters" (1957), and "The Space Children" (1958).
9. The motion picture "The Neanderthal Man" (1953) begins at the home of Prof. Clifford Groves. Where is it located?

Answer: in California's High Sierra mountains

Neanderthals are a subspecies of archaic humans, the remains of the first of which were found in 1856 in the Neander Valley in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Professor Clifford Groves' cabin in "The Neanderthal Man" is located in a scrubby pine forest in the California High Sierra mountains.

The meeting of the Naturalist Society takes place in Los Angeles, California, but all the other action occurs in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
10. Which of the following is *NOT* one of the scary persons/things that threaten Slip and Sach in "The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters" (1954)?

Answer: an Egyptian mummy named Kharis

Slip and Sach are invited to Gravesend Manor to negotiate the lease of a vacant lot in the Bowery for neighbourhood kids to use to play baseball. Grandma Amelia Gravesend has a carnivorous plant which is hungry for its next meal. Anton Gravesend built a robot named Gorog into which he wants to transplant a human brain. Derek Gravesend has a gorilla named Cosmos into which he wants to transplant a human brain.
