Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following characters in "Five" (1951) was black?

Answer: Charles

Charles, played by Charles Lampkin, is a black man employed as a teller in the bank of which Oliver P. Barnstaple is an officer. Charles and Oliver survived the atomic blast and radiation because they were accidentally locked in the bank's vault when it occurred. Charles is a gentle, thoughtful, and kind man who takes care of Oliver, who has lost his mind due to the horror they have experienced.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: The Werewolf of Inverness

There were only three werewolf movies made in the US in the 1950s: "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957), "The Werewolf" (1956), and "Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957). Other lycanthropic motion pictures are "Werewolf of London" (1935), "The Werewolf of Washington" (1973), "An American Werewolf in London" (1981), "An American Werewolf in Paris" (1997), and "A Werewolf in England" (2020).

There does not appear to have been a theatrical motion picture called "The Werewolf of Inverness" despite the persistent stories that the werewolves of Britain took their final refuge from encroaching civilisation in the Highlands of Scotland.
3. How, if at all, is Ro-Man destroyed in the end of "Robot Monster" (1953)?

Answer: He is killed by a ray from his own superior.

Ro-Man, having fallen in love with the professor's daughter Alice, does not wish to comply with the order to kill every human on Earth. He attempts to bargain with The Great Guidance, his superior, about keeping Alice alive. The Great Guidance kills Ro-Man with a beam to prevent him from developing independent thought and thereby becoming human.

All of this is mooted by a plot development in which Johnny awakens from sleep, having been knocked out by a bump on the head. Apparently, none of the events in the movie really happened; it was all a concussed dream. As the family leaves, however, Ro-Man emerges from his cave.
4. Who played Jerrie Turner in "She Demons" (1958)?

Answer: Irish McCalla

After coming up through the ranks as pin-up queen and "Varga Girl" model, Irish McCalla got her big break as the lead in the television programme "Sheena: Queen of the Jungle" (1955-1956). She apparently looked great in leopard skin. Her television success led to her first lead role in a motion picture: Jerrie Turner in "She Demon." This was the only film in which she received top billing.
5. In "Spaceways" (1953), an intelligence-services investigator concludes that Doctor Stephen Mitchell murdered his unfaithful wife Vanessa and her lover Doctor Philip Crenshaw and did what with their bodies?

Answer: stuffed them into the fuel tanks of the AS1 rocket

When Doctor Philip Crenshaw, played by Andrew Osborn, and Vanessa Mitchell, played by Cecile Chevreau, go missing, an investigator comes to Deanfield to solve the mystery. The intelligence officer, Doctor Smith, played by Alan Wheatley, concludes that Doctor Mitchell killed his wife and her paramour.

He opines that Mitchell packed their bodies into the fuel tanks of the rocket AS1, which is now in low orbit around the Earth. Mitchell resolves to pilot AS2 up to AS1 to prove his innocence.
6. Where was the motion picture "When Worlds Collide" (1951) made?

Answer: in the US

"When Worlds Collide" was made by Paramount Pictures and released in the US on 15 November 1951 in Los Angeles. Shots of the rocketship campsite were done at Calabasas, California. Extensive use of stock footage reduced production costs substantially. Chesley Bonestell painted the landing/crashing area of the planet Zyra.
7. In "Lost Planet Airmen" (1951), what is Science Associates?

Answer: a private desert research facility

Professor Millard, also called Doctor Millard, is the inventor of the atomic-powered flying suit and the hand-held sonic ray gun used by Jeff King in the guise of Rocket Man. After an attempt on his life, he feigns his death and works in a secret laboratory in a cave in the desert. He is a member of Science Associates, as is Jeff King. He invented the Decimator, which can dissolve rock, and an atomic powered aerial torpedo (which later generations would call a missile). Doctor Vulcan has stolen the Decimator and seeks to steal the aerial torpedo.
8. For what is Sonny Tufts best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Bowen Charlton Tufts III (1911-1970) used the name "Sonny Tufts" for his many appearances on stage, in film and on television. In his college days, he studied opera and sang as a member of the Whiffenpoofs. His early films included many musical and romantic comedies.

His drinking led to a decline in popularity. He played in B-movies near the end of his career, e.g. "Cat-Women of the Moon" (1953) and "Serpent Island" (1954).
9. Where was the Italian motion picture "I Vampiri" (1957) a/k/a "Lust of the Vampire" (1960) a/k/a "The Devil's Commandment" (1960) set?

Answer: Paris, France

The original treatment of "I Vampiri" called for it to be set in 18th or 19th century Paris, France. The director Riccardo Freda, looking at a scant budget, reset the film in 1950s Paris in order to avoid building period sets. In the movie, Pierre learns that one of the murder victims was a student at Ecole Jean d'Arc, which is a real school in the 13th Arrondissement.
10. How is the monster in "The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent" (1957) killed (if at all) in the end?

Answer: Vedric pierces its eye/head with his sword.

The Vikings escape and paddle away from their captors. The Grimaults pursue them. Vedric leads his people into a great vortex. The sea monster makes another cameo appearance in which it kills all of the Grimault warriors. Vedric kills the sea serpent by throwing his weapon and striking the beast's head in its eye.

The Vikings return to Stannjold, the seas are freed of the monster, and the Scandinavian world enjoys peace and freedom.
