Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars" (1953), for how long are Lester and Orville actually on the planet Mars?

Answer: not any time at all

Despite the title of the movie and no matter the intent of Lester and Orville when they leave New Orleans, the boys never land on the planet Mars. They land on Venus instead. At one point, they think they are on Mars when they land on the outskirts of New Orleans, but they are mistaken. Apropos of nothing but an explanation of one of the incorrect answers, there are 687 Earth days in one Martian year.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: My Father, the Vampire

"My Son, the Vampire" (1952) is a silly British horror comedy featuring Arthur Lucan's cross-dressed character Mrs. Riley. "Uncle Was a Vampire" (1959) is an equally silly Italian horror comedy in which a hotel's bellboy's uncle is a vampire. "The Vampire" (1957) is a serious American vampire movie.

A children's book by Christopher S. Surratt called "My Dad is a Vampire" was published in 2011. An adult novel titled "My Dad's a Vampire" by Barry Lowe was published in 2018. A feature-length motion picture called "Vampire Dad" was released in 2020. It is about a psychiatrist turned into a vampire to provide therapy to emotionally troubled vampires. A rock-and-roll band called The Meteors released their song "My Daddy Is A Vampire" on their album "Teenagers from Outer Space" in 1981. No feature film called "My Father, the Vampire" was made in the 1950s.
3. How is the monster Guaddi finally killed in "Prehistoric Women" (1950)?

Answer: He is burned to death.

Engor, having discovered how to make and use fire, shows his companions how to construct torches. They are trapped in a cave by Guaddi and they use fire to drive him away from the entrance. Engor directs the men to ignite a circle of fire surrounding the giant. He is trapped in the flames, distraught with fear, and perishes in the fire.
4. Sandy Drescher, who played Eadie Johnson in "The Space Children" (1958), also played the catatonic Ellinson Girl in "Them!" (1954).

Answer: True

Sandra Kay (Sandy) Descher (b. 1945) worked as a child actress in many motion pictures. In the 1950s, she had a long-term contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Her role in "Them!" was deeply pathetic: she appears to be the sole survivor of an attack by the monsters who killed her father, mother, and brother.

She is in shock and cannot speak. "The Space Children" (1958) was her last motion picture. Descher left acting so that she and her husband, Donald White, could manage the Palm Springs store of her family's chain of Michael's stores, which offered casual Hawaiian fashions.
5. On what sort of mission were the aliens who landed their flying saucer in Norrisville, California, in "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" (1958)?

Answer: to breed with Earth women

Marge confronts her alien/husband, Bill, with her belief that he is not the human with whom she fell in love. He comes clean and explains who they are and the purpose of their mission. Their planet is in the Andromeda Constellation. Its sun became unstable and killed their planet and all of their females.

A few males escaped on space ships and were visiting inhabited planets to find females with whom to reproduce. Marge asks about the offspring, which would result, "What kind of children?" Bill replies, "Our kind."
6. Where was the motion picture "Warning from Space" (1956) made?

Answer: Japan

"Warning from Space" is a Japanese tokusatsu science-fiction film released in January 1956 by Daiei, and was the first Japanese science-fiction film to be produced in colour. The exteriors were shot mostly in and around Tokyo.
7. What is the role of the character John Meierman, played by John Wengraf, in "The Return of Dracula" (1958)?

Answer: vampire hunter

Investigator John Meierman leads a group of vampire hunters to capture Dracula in a cemetery in Transylvania. When they open his crypt, it is empty. Meierman tracks Dracula to Carleton, California. In the culminating scenes, he kills Jennie, who Dracula changed into a vampire, by staking her through the heart. Meierman was played by Austro-Hungarian actor John Wengraf. Wengraf had a stage and film career in Austria until he was forced to flee by the Nazis.

In the US, he played numerous movie roles including "Gog" (1954), "The Disembodied" (1957), "The Return of Dracula" (1958), and "12 to the Moon" (1960).
8. For what is Jason Evers best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Jason Evers (1922-2005) was an American actor, perhaps best known for starring in the television programme "Channing" (1963). He also played in a variety of science fiction and horror films, e.g. "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" (1962), "The Illustrated Man" (1969), "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" (1971), "Claws" (1977), "Barracuda" (1979), and "The Stuff" (1985). Evers served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
9. Where is the motion picture "The Cyclops" (1957) set?

Answer: in the remote mountain jungles of Mexico

Rather than accepting that her missing fiancée is dead, Susan Winter organises an expedition to the Tarahumara Mountains of Mexico. (This is a real location in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range in northwestern Mexico, specifically in the state of Chihuahua.) Her beau's aeroplane crashed somewhere in that area.

When the search party spots aircraft wreckage, they land to explore the surrounding jungle. Much of the film was shot in Bronson Canyon, a section of Griffith Park in Los Angeles. This area has been used numerous times in Western and science fiction movies and television programmes.
10. What was the role of Paul Blaisdell in the motion picture "Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" (1959)?

Answer: He is the guy inside the monster suit.

Paul Blaisdell (1927-1983) was American International's top special effects creator and monster maker. He crafted the monster costumes for "The Beast with a Million Eyes" (1955), "Day the World Ended" (1955), "It Conquered the World" (1956), "The She-Creature" (1956), "Voodoo Woman" (1957), "Not of This Earth" (1957), "From Hell It Came" (1957), "Invasion of the Saucer Men" (1957), "Earth vs. the Spider" (1958), "How to Make a Monster" (1958), "It! The Terror from Beyond Space" (1958), "Invisible Invaders" (1959), and "The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" (1959).

"Dragstrip Hollow" was his last film. Everyone at the party depicted was required to remove their Hallowe'en costumes, and when the monster removed his head, Paul Blaisdell was inside. Blaisdell breaks the fourth wall and says, "You've seen me before. I scared you to death in 'The Day the World Ended.' You shivered when you saw me in 'She-Creature.' Oh, the shame of it, the indignity! They didn't use me in "Horrors of the Black Museum" after my years of faithful service. They just... threw me away!"
