Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happened to the rocket ship Q-1 in "The Quatermass Xperiment" (1955), 57 hours after its launch?

Answer: It crash landed in a field outside of London.

A bit more than 57 hours after the lift-off, the Q-1 plunged straight back into the Earth like a dart in a dartboard. Only one of the three astronauts on board, Victor Carroon, was found alive, and he was stumbling and incoherent. The others' (Greene and Reichenheim) space suits were on board but were empty.

The surviving space traveller's only words were "Help me!" The camera trained on the rocket's interior was destroyed by the crash landing.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: The Demon Understairs

"Curse of the Demon" (1957) is a British horror film starring an American leading man, Dana Andrews. "Night of the Demon" (1957) is an edited-to-be-shorter version of "Curse of the Demon". "She Demons" (1958) is an American horror film starring Irish McCalla and Tod Griffin, both Americans.

In the American television series "The Haunted Museum", a 2021 episode (S1.E8) was titled "Demon Under the Stairs". Wes Craven wrote and directed the motion picture "The People Under the Stairs" (1991). The term "understairs" is less common in American than British usage. There does not appear to have been a 1950s movie named "The Demon Understairs".
3. In the motion picture "King Dinosaur" (1955) how were the monsters on the island on the planet Nova killed?

Answer: an atomic bomb

After the party has been pursued at length by prehistoric creatures intent on eating them, Ralph reveals "I brought the atom bomb. I think it's a good time to use it." The "atom bomb" to which he refers is an "auxiliary nuclear power source" small enough to be carried by a single person. If allowed to "unharness", this power supply will explode like an atom bomb... which is exactly what it does.

A timer set for 30 minutes goes off, as does the bomb. The island on which King Dinosaur lives is turned to radioactive dust and the monsters along with it. About this extinction event, Ralph says, "Well, we've done it," to which Dick responds, "Yeah, we sure have done it, we've brought civilization to planet Nova."
4. What role was played by Lisa Simone in "Missile to the Moon" (1958)?

Answer: one of the Moon maidens

Lisa Simone (1935-2020) was born in Paris, died in Rome, and was an actress in the United States. A great beauty, she was named Miss France in 1973. This title brought her to the Miss Universe pageant in Long Beach, California. She was cast in several motion pictures including "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1962).

She also played in "Missile to the Moon" (1958) and "The Giant Gila Monster" (1959). Her marriage to Hollywood actor Steve Barclay took her to Rome where she lived until her death.
5. In what activity was Jessica Burns, played by Carolyn Kearney, engaged which led to the discovery of the head of Gideon Drew in "The Thing That Couldn't Die" (1958)?

Answer: dowsing for water

Jessica Burns (Carolyn Kearney) is an eighteen-year-old woman who claims to possess psychic gifts. On her assurance that she can find much-needed water for her Aunt Flavia McIntyre's ranch, she goes dowsing. Despite criticism that dowsing is superstitious nonsense, she pursues underground water with her stick.

The working title of this motion picture was "The Water Witch". Her efforts lead to the unearthing of a box containing a severed head in the course of digging a new well.
6. "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951) was stitched together into a feature-length film from several episodes of the television programme "The Adventures of Superman".

Answer: False

In the heyday of theatrical movie serials, numerous 12-15 part serials were edited into feature-length movies and re-released. These included the adventures of Flash Gordon, The Green Hornet, Gene Autry, Zorro, Chandu the Magician, Dick Tracy, and many more. Republic Pictures specialised in this sort of arrangement.

In contrast, "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951) was shot as a feature-length theatrical motion picture which served double duty as a pilot for the half-hour television series sold to ABC-TV.

The 68-minute movie was re-edited into two parts titled "The Unknown People: Part I" (1953) and "The Unknown People: Part II" (1953) which were shown as the two season-concluding episodes of the first season of "The Adventures of Superman".
7. In the Gill Man series of motion pictures, which ordinal is "The Creature Walks Among Us" (1956)?

Answer: third

The original "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954) was such a remarkable success at the box office that it was promptly followed by "Revenge of the Creature" (1955). Universal Pictures made the first two films in 3-D. The third and final instalment, "The Creature Walks Among Us" (1956), was made in 2-D. It was not only the last Gill Man movie but also the last in the Universal Classic Monsters series (a collection of 41 motion pictures (1931-1956) which were marketed in sets).
8. For what is Lance Fuller best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Handsome and athletic, Lance Fuller (1928-2001) was a successful American actor. He acted in television ("77 Sunset Strip", "Maverick", and "The Twilight Zone") and in a number of science fiction and horror motion pictures, e.g. "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" (1943), "This Island Earth" (1955), "The She-Creature" (1956), "Voodoo Woman" (1957), "The Bride and the Beast" (1958), "Scream, Evelyn, Scream!" (1970), and "The Andromeda Strain" (1971).
9. Of the three young ghost hunters in "The Headless Ghost" (1959), both the boys, Bill and Ronnie, are from the United States. Where is Ingrid from?

Answer: Denmark

Three international exchange students are touring Great Britain. Two are Americans: Bill played by Richard Lyon and Ronnie played by David Rose. They are teamed with Ingrid, a Danish young lady played by Liliane Scottane. Ronnie convinces Bill and Ingrid to spend a night in the castle looking for ghosts and the fun begins.
10. Better known for his role as Dr. Miles Bennell in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956), who played New Orleans big-band clarinettist Stan Grayson in "Nightmare" (1956)?

Answer: Kevin McCarthy

In "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", Kevin McCarthy played a small-town medical doctor who discovers an alien plot to replace all of the citizens in his community. In "Nightmare", McCarthy plays Stan Grayson, a big-band musician in New Orleans. Grayson has the enduring bad dream that he has murdered someone by stabbing the victim and hiding his body behind a mirrored door.

The clarinettist awakens from his nightmare to find fresh blood on his wrist, bruises on his throat, and a key in his hand, all of which figured in the dream.
