Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Big Bug" movies differ from other giant-monster movies in that the enlarged creatures are insects, arachnids, and myriapods rather than dinosaurs or gorillas. Which of the following films may *NOT* properly be categorized as a "big bug movie" of the 1950s?

Answer: The Thing That Couldn't Die

In "Earth vs the Spider" (1958), the giant monster was a spider. In "Them" (1954), Los Angeles was challenged by giant ants. In "The Strange World of Planet X" (1958), the scary immense adversaries were grasshoppers, roaches, beetles, and spiders. "The Thing That Couldn't Die" (1958) was about the severed head of a sorcerer who had been "killed" 400 years before.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Hour of Dracula

"Blood of Dracula" (1957) is set in a girls' school. Christopher Lee played the principal role in "Dracula" (1958). The film was renamed "Horror of Dracula" for release in the US. There was a movie called "Horror of Dracula" (1958) and another called "House of Dracula" (1945).

The Bran Castle, in Transylvania, Romania, is advertised as "the home of Dracula". There does not appear to have been a 1950s horror film titled "Hour of Dracula".
3. How was the evil Nyah finally killed in "Devil Girl from Mars" (1954)?

Answer: blowing up her flying saucer

In one exciting scene, the journalist Michael Carter is given an old gun by the innkeeper Mr. Jamieson. He empties the weapon into Nyah with no effect. In another exciting scene, the trapped characters set their own trap by which to electrocute Nyah but, when she trips it, she is annoyed but uninjured.

In the end, Professor Hennessy has determined how to destroy the spaceship and shares this information with Justin, the escaped convict. Nyah takes Justin on board her ship. As they take off, the ship explodes in midair. Justin apparently sacrificed his life to save mankind, thereby atoning for his crimes.
4. Which actress plays the naive and lovely Altaira "Alta" Morbius in "Forbidden Planet" (1956)?

Answer: Anne Francis

Anne Francis (1930-2011) played her first big-budget role in "Forbidden Planet". Her success carried over into her leading role in "Honey West" on television (1965-1966). This TV show broke many stereotypes limiting women in action-adventure programmes.

She also had roles in "The Rocket Man" (1954), "The Satan Bug" (1965), and the made-for-television movies "The Intruders" (1970), "Detour to Terror" (1980), and "Mazes and Monsters" (1982).
5. In "Gog" (1954), how were research scientists Dr. Kirby and Dr. Hubertus killed?

Answer: frozen to death

The two scientists are experimenting on monkeys, freezing and reviving them, as a possible means of suspending the animation of human crews on long space flights. Their cryo-chamber chills to -85 degrees F. Dr. Hubertus, played by Michael Fox, is trapped inside the chamber and frozen to death. Dr. Kirby, played by Aline Towne, enters the lab, discovers Dr. Hubertus' body, enters the chamber, and is herself trapped inside and frozen to death.
6. A theatrical adaptation of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" was made subsequently to the 1956 movie version.

Answer: True

In the US, Studio One produced a television adaptation of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" in 1953. The BBC produced a made-for-television version of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" in 1954. Peter Cushing starred. The 1956 theatrical film was remade in 1984 starring John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, and Cyril Cusack. It was Burton's last film and is dedicated to his memory.
7. In "Pharaoh's Curse" (1957), into what sort of animal is Simira able to turn?

Answer: cat

The soldiers rushing to rescue the members of an archaeological expedition in the Valley of the Kings meet Simira, a mysterious Egyptian woman played by Ziva Rodann. She is wearing a necklace with an amulet of a cat. When a mummy arises from a sarcophagus to punish the scientists, the tracks of a cat are found in the dust leading to a solid wall.

The character Sylvia sees the shadow of a cat just before Simira enters her tent. The scientists conclude that Simira is the goddess Bastet, normally depicted with the head of a cat, in human form.
8. For what is Wally Westmore best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: make-up

Walter 'Wally' James Westmore (1906-1973) was a make-up artist, one of six brothers (Monte, Perc, Ern, Wally, Bud and Frank) all of whom were successful motion-picture make-up artists. His breakthrough make-up was in the transition of Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1931). Among his more than 300 films are "Island of Lost Souls" (1932), "I Married a Witch" (1942), "The War of the Worlds" (1953), "The Space Children" (1958) and "The Colossus of New York" (1958). See generally Frank Westmore and Muriel Davidson, "The Westmores of Hollywood" (Lippincott, 1976).
9. Where is "The Beast with a Million Eyes" (1955) set?

Answer: a date ranch in the California desert

Allan Kelley, his family, and a hired man operate a date ranch in the remote California desert. The spaceship carrying the beast lands nearby. The movie was filmed in Indio and the Coachella Valley. Sometimes called Greater Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley has been the scene of many motion picture filmings, e.g. "The Monster that Challenged the World" (1957) and "Riders of the Whistling Skull" (1937).
10. In "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957), Dr. Lomas tells Janet that her father's curse is hereditary. Is this possible where her father's homicidal madness was caused by a chemical potion which he consumed?

Answer: No

Doctor Lomas tells Janet and George that he has more to tell them about her inheritance. The next day, he tells Janet that she inherited her father's propensity to turn into a werewolf. She tells George that their wedding is off because she fears giving this curse to their future children. Dr. Jekyll discovered a serum which would separate the good and evil elements of a person's personality.

There was nothing for him to pass genetically to his daughter nor to her children.
