The All Terrain Armored Transport was a massive, slow-moving walker with four legs, developed for Imperial ground assault. It was designed, as the name implies, with heavy armor, that made it able to withstand incredible amounts of firepower. The AT-AT's most notable moment in the "Star Wars" saga is in Episode V, "The Empire Strikes Back", where it is used by the Empire for their attack on Echo Base, used by the Rebel Alliance on Hoth.
2. AT-ST
Answer: Empire
The All Terrain Scout Transport was a smaller, more nimble cousin of the AT-AT. The Empire used AT-STs for quick movement over any terrain, also providing cover fire for Imperial troops. AT-STs could also be modified before deployment to best adapt to a wide variety of planetary conditions and landscapes.
Its most notable appearance is in Episode VI, "Return of the Jedi". The Empire attempted to use the AT-ST to quell the Rebel attack on the Death Star shield generator on Endor. Unfortunately, the Empire didn't count on the native Ewoks joining up to aid the Rebellion, and several AT-STs fell to Ewok attacks.
3. TIE Interceptor
Answer: Empire
TIE fighters, or Twin Ion Engine fighters, were the backbone of the Imperial Navy. Built as light and speedy fighters without shields, the idea was that TIEs would be able to swarm the enemy and overwhelm them with superior numbers. TIE Interceptors were more formidable than standard TIE fighters. They were faster, more nimble, and possessed a more powerful weapon system, using four laser cannons on each of the four wingtips instead of the standard TIE's two.
The TIE Interceptor was modelled after Darth Vader's TIE Advanced fighter, which was deemed too expensive to produce on a large scale, making the Interceptor the better option. Vader's Advanced fighter was first seen in Episode IV: "A New Hope." The TIE Interceptors played a big part in the Battle of Endor for the Empire despite their defeat.
4. Star Destroyer
Answer: Empire
Imperial Star Destroyers were the fearsome command star-ships that struck fear into anyone not siding with the Empire. Star Destroyers were individually named, and were capable of storing patrols of TIE fighters. Star Destroyers were also split into different classes, including Cruisers, Battlecruisers and Dreadnoughts. The Empire also made Interdictor-class Cruisers that possessed gravity well projectors, giving that particular Star Destroyer the ability to pull ships out of hyperspace.
Star Destroyers are seen throughout the "Star Wars" saga. The first scene in "Star Wars" shown in 1977 includes a shot of the Star Destroyer "Devastator", Darth Vader's flagship. Later in Episode V, we see Vader's flagship as the Super Star Destroyer "Executor".
5. X-Wing
Answer: Rebellion
X-Wings were the backbone of the Rebel Alliance's space force. While not as nimble and quick as the Imperial TIE fighters, X-Wings had shields and each pilot had an astromech droid to aid them in their flight. Their firepower, however, was comparable to the Imperial TIE fighters, which enabled the Rebels to hold the line against the Empire despite massive numbers against them.
Their first appearance in the saga is in Episode IV "A New Hope", but they are also seen across the entire universe.
6. Y-Wing
Answer: Rebellion
Y-Wings were the stronger cousins to the Rebellion's X-Wings. Since they were stronger, they were able to take more hits in combat. While slower than their Rebel cousins and their Imperial counterparts, they were also extremely powerful. Y-Wings carried proton bombs, useful in attacking capital ships. Like X-Wings, Y-Wings appeared first in Episode IV, but are shown across the "Star Wars" saga.
7. A-Wing
Answer: Rebellion
A-Wings were comparable to the Imperial TIE Interceptors in size, speed and agility. Since they were lighter than the X-Wings and Y-Wings, A-Wings were easier to destroy, but not easy to catch. A key component of the Rebellion's success above the planet Endor in Episode VI, A-Wings are also seen across the entire "Star Wars" saga.
8. T-47 Airspeeder
Answer: Rebellion
The T-47 Airspeeder was a low altitude craft used by the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. The original design was adapted by the Rebels into what became Snowspeeders, which the Rebels used in their defense of Echo Base on Hoth. The T-47 was a craft designed for two person flight.
The front facing seat was for the pilot, while the rear facing seat was for the gunner. The gunner was also able to fire a tow cable, which the Rebels used to great affect against the Imperial AT-AT's on Hoth.
9. AAT
Answer: Confederacy
The Armored Assault Tank was used by the Trade Federation as part of their alliance with the Confederacy for Independent Systems. The ATT was a wheel-less tank, relying on repulsor-lift technology for movement. Its thick armor plating made it a formidable obstacle for anyone on the other side of the battlefield.
Its first appearance in the saga is in Episode I, "The Phantom Menace", where they were used by the Trade Federation during their battle with the Gungan army
10. STAP
Answer: Confederacy
The Single Trooper Aerial Platform was, as the name implies, a vehicle capable of carrying just a single battle droid. Used as patrol craft, the droid army used them to great effect during the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo. STAPs were equipped with a pair of blaster cannons, and like the AAT's are propelled using repulsor-lift technology. Since the driver of the STAP is out in the open, they are subjected to easier attack than other vehicles.
11. IG-227 Hailfire
Answer: Confederacy
The IG-227 Hailfire Tank was a key component of the droid and Geonosian force during the Battle of Geonosis that kicked off the Clone Wars. Propelled by two massive wheels on either side of the tank, the Hailfire was also equipped with two distinct missile launcher pods in the center.
The missiles were powerful enough that a single missile destroyed a Republic AT-TE during the Battle of Geonosis.
12. NR-N99 Persuader-class Enforcer
Answer: Confederacy
Sporting heavy blasters, its own ion cannon, and concussion missile launchers, the NR-N99 Persuader-class Enforcer was used most famously during the Battle of Kashyyyk, seen in Episode III, "Revenge of the Sith." Also known as the "snail droid," the NR-N99 used a centralized traction thread to propel it forward.
Its strong armor is not, however, enough to prevent it from exploding when a Wookiee warrior slaps a detonation device on it!
13. AT-TE
Answer: Republic
The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer was the Clone trooper forerunner to the Imperial AT-AT. First seen in Episode II, "Attack of the Clones," the Republic first used the AT-TE during the battle of Geonosis at the start of the Clone Wars. Durability of the AT-TE was championed by many clones during and after the war, but they were not invincible. One was destroyed during the Battle of Geonosis by a droid Hailfire tank missile when it struck the AT-TE's main weak point.
CT-7567, Captain Rex, leader of the original 501st legion, used a modified AT-TE after the Grand Army of the Republic was disbanded. He and two other clones spent their days in retirement aboard an AT-TE on the remote planet of Seelos. Its strength and durability allowed the tank to endure for many years after the fall of the Republic.
14. BARC Speeder
Answer: Republic
The Biker Advanced Recon Commando Speeder was a repulsor-lift powered speeder bike used by the Clone Army during the Clone Wars. Troopers used the BARC Speeder as a patrol bike, and also to aid a soldier when speed was a necessary component for a mission.
A BARC Speeder was seen in Episode III, "Revenge of the Sith", being used by clones after Order 66 came down, to kill Jedi Master Stass Allie on the planet Saleucami.
15. AT-RT
Answer: Republic
The All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport was used by the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars and during the transition of the Republic to the Galactic Empire. the AT-RT was the forerunner to the Imperial AT-ST, with similar characteristics between both models.
The AT-RT was an open air transport, leaving the soldier piloting the vehicle more vulnerable. The AT-ST remedied that weakness by ensuring the troopers in the Imperial AT-ST were in an enclosed cockpit.
16. ARC-170
Answer: Republic
The Aggressive ReConnaissance-170 Starfighter was the Clone Army version of the X-Wing or TIE fighter. They were the backbone of the navy of the Grand Army of the Republic. The ARC-170 had a powerful weapon system, shields, and hyperdrive, but were still very nimble. After Order 66 and the rise of the Empire, the ARC-170 was phased out of production.
Choosing instead to rely on sheer number to win space battles, the Empire developed the TIE fighter series, removing shields, hyperdrives and life support systems. These changes made TIE fighters much faster and nimbler, but it made them weaker, meaning that there needed to be more during each battle to ensure the Empire's victory.
