Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which all-American actor is depicted in this overly geometric display of the red garb worn by him during his portrayal of John T. Chance in 1959?

Answer: John Wayne

In 'Rio Bravo' (1959), the prolific John Wayne stars as John T. Chance, a sheriff (of course) who has to deal with the escalating misbehaviour of Joe Burdette, an entitled relative of a local land baron. Starting off with minor breaches of the peace, Burdette becomes increasingly violent; he knocks John T. Chance unconscious before killing another individual in the vicinity. Chance regains consciousness and successfully arrests Joe. The sheriff's biggest task however is keeping Joe in custody, whilst the aggressor's rancher brother, Nathan, begins applying pressure to get Joe released.

This red shirt, red waistcoat and silver badge ensemble is one of my favourites from the Western genre. John Wayne also wore a striking red shirt in a number of other films including 'The Searchers' (1956).
2. By colour, which of these two abstract figures represents Dory, the forgetful fish from 'Finding Nemo' (2003)?

Answer: Blue & Yellow

'Finding Nemo' (2003) was the fifth film released by the animation studio, Pixar, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios. The style of 3-dimensional, computer-generated animation deployed by the studio marked a departure from the more classical hand-drawn and coloured styles utilised throughout the decades by Disney in films such as 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (1937) and 'Beauty and the Beast' (1991).

This engaging film welcomes the audience into a vibrant coral reef community where we find the titular Nemo - and his father, Marlin - residing in an anemone. The two (orange and white) clownfish become separated when Nemo finds himself astray from his natural habitat. Marlin does everything in his power to find his estranged son and during his journey he encounters Dory, a very forgetful blue tang who provides Marlin with support - when she can remember that is!
3. This creepy character - played by Elsa Lanchester - was created to be the partner of which monster in a film of 1935?

Answer: Frankenstein

'Bride of Frankenstein' (1935) was released four years after the success of its groundbreaking prequel, 'Frankenstein' (1931). In the latter of these two films, Dr Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) has a god-like ambition to create life; the result of this obsession is the creation of Frankenstein's Monster (and the loss of the doctor's sanity in parallel).

In the 1935 sequel, Colin Clive returns as Dr Frankenstein (and Boris Karloff reprises the role of The Monster), only this time he decides to create another being to provide company, and a mate, for The Monster. The Monster's Mate (or The Bride) - played by British actress Elsa Lanchester - is animated by lightning and the final scenes of the film reveal to the audience whether or not The Monster and The Bride are meant to be for one another.

The image depicts the streak of white/grey that runs through the hairstyle of The Bride; it is a well-remembered visual from Universal horror in the 1930s.
4. Which character - a David Bowie alter ego who features in a concert film of 1979 with his backing group, the Spiders from Mars - is often mistakenly represented by this double lightning bolt appearance?

Answer: Ziggy Stardust

'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' is a 1979 concert film that is sometimes referred to as 'Bowie 1973' for short. The alternative title provides an indication as to the content of the film, namely a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon (later named the Apollo) in 1973 that, unexpectedly to the music world, becomes the last concert put on by David Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust and his band, the Spiders from Mars; Ziggy retired but Bowie famously continued making records.

Given that the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane eras are so intertwined and that the two characters are similar in appearance, the two Bowie alter egos are easy to confuse. I admit, I mixed them up too when creating the image for this very question! The iconic double lightning bolt appearance is immortalised on the album cover of 'Aladdin Sane'.

Camille was the alter ego of Prince (insert all of his subsequent quirky monikers here), Sasha Fierce was the alternative persona used by Beyoncé and Slim Shady (the real one of course) was the creation of Eminem.
5. Which emotion is featured alongside Joy in this abstract interpretation of the Pixar animation, 'Inside Out' (2015)?

Answer: Anger

'Inside Out' (2015) and 'Inside Out 2' (2024) are two films that track the psychological development of a young girl named Riley. As she grows older she starts to acquire a greater emotional range; each newly acquired emotion is personified by a colourful character and these characters tend to first arrive on the scene at particularly important moments in Riley's life. The plot follows the emotions learning to work together for the benefit of the youngster.

In the first of the two films, we are introduced to Joy (the blue-haired character in the image), Sadness (a blue character, naturally), Fear (purple), Disgust (green) and Anger (the hot-headed character shown in red in the picture). In 'Inside Out 2', the original cast of "emotions" are joined by some of the more awkward teenage feelings such as Anxiety (a peculiar looking orange character), Envy (turquoise), Embarrassment (pink), Ennui (light purple) and Nostalgia (a grandmotherly appearance).
6. In which of the following films did this character, played by a British actor born in 1889, NOT feature?

Answer: 'The General' (1926)

The character represented in the image is The Tramp, a cinematic creation of British actor and director, Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin appears as this character in three of the four listed films; the only one in which he doesn't appear is 'The General', a 1926 production starring Buster Keaton as Johnnie Gray. Gray is refused a place in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War on the basis that he is more useful as the skilled engineer of a locomotive (The General). This reason is withheld - from him and others - which causes friction in his relationship with Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack).

'The Tramp' (1915) featured an early appearance of Chaplin's famous character; it is a short silent movie that sees The Tramp take on work at a small farm; he becomes attracted to the farmer's daughter but discovers that she may already be in a relationship.

My personal Chaplin favourite is 'City Lights' (1931), a film in which a most unlikely relationship blossoms between The Tramp and a blind flower girl who later regains her sight. 'Modern Times' (1936) saw Charlie Chaplin once again perform the role of The Tramp and this time he takes a job at a factory but is overwhelmed by the advanced technology.
7. This character sang 'Cheer Up, Charlie' in 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory' (1971).

Answer: False

Dressed smartly in his magnificent purple coat, Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) takes five lucky - or not so lucky - children on the trip of a lifetime through the magnificent chocolate factory that he and his assistants, Oompa-Loompas, call home. Access to the factory is granted through finding a golden ticket in one of his chocolate bars. The "artist" responsible for this abstract image refuses to say whether Wonka is holding a chocolate bar or a golden ticket. I imagine he wishes to leave it to the reader's 'Pure Imagination'.

Charlie's mum (played by Diana Sowle) sings the soothing 'Cheer Up, Charlie' in the classic 1971 film. She does so to console her son who is struggling with the disappointment of not being in possession of a golden ticket. Give it time Charlie, give it time...
8. Princess or not, this hairstyle is out there! Which member of Alderaan royalty sported it in 'Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope' (1977)?

Answer: Leia Organa

The original 'Star Wars' film of 1977 brought many memorable things to the attention of the public, whether it be the grand space opera storyline, engaging characters, diverse planets or Princess Leia Organa's hairstyle. Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) was a princess from the planet Alderaan, an Earth-like world that gets destroyed by the much feared laser weaponry of the Death Star.

Princess Leia, who held a leading position in the Rebel Alliance, was made to watch her home planet get obliterated as part of the fight against the Galactic Empire in this classic story of good versus evil, light versus dark. Key to good prevailing is the acquisition by the Rebel Alliance of plans that outline the weakness of the Death Star.
9. What fictional tradesman lends his name to the title of the 2026 film starring Chris Pratt, 'The Super ___ Galaxy Movie'?

Answer: Mario

Whilst Mario - alongside his younger brother, Luigi - is best known for being the protagonist in a plethora of video games released by Nintendo, he has also made appearances in a number of films. The first such film was 'Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!' back in 1986 and as the rather long-winded title alludes to, Mario sets out to rescue Princess Peach, a storyline that echoes the task undertaken by the Italian plumber in some of the earliest video games of the franchise.

Forty years on from his appearance in the aforementioned manga film of 1986, Mario returns to the big screen in 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' (2026). In this animated comedy, Mario (Chris Pratt) finds himself up against Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), who is seeking to restore his father, Bowser (Jack Black), to full power and for the pair of them to subsequently - and ultimately - destroy the universe. Mario teams up with some much loved characters (Luigi and Yoshi to name but two) to try to prevent this from happening.
10. What is the name of this British musician who was played by Taron Egerton in a film of 2019?

Answer: Elton John

The heart-shaped glasses that just scream Elton John (born Reginald Dwight in 1947) are one of a number of fashion statements that make this successful British singer and pianist stand out from the crowd. Elton even tried out hair transplants decades before they became commonplace, though they were ultimately unsuccessful; following on from this he used bespoke hairpieces (wig seems like such an unfashionable word doesn't it?).

Elton's life was dramatised in the jukebox biopic, 'Rocketman' (2019), a film that takes its name from one of the singer's more memorable songs (though it didn't reach number one in the UK singles charts). Elton is played by actor Taron Egerton, with Kit Connor portraying the star in his teenage years. The film takes the form of a series of flashbacks, with a cinematic exploration of - amongst other things - Elton's early relationship with his parents, his initial piano lessons, the long term collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), his sexuality and the highs and lows of his life as a superstar.
