Bernie is a Western lowland gorilla at the Franklin Park Zoo and serves as Griffin's best friend. He is physically portrayed on set by special effects suit performers, while his gravelly voice is provided by the actor Nick Nolte. Bernie begins the movie as a lonely and misunderstood problem animal, confined to a secluded, rocky enclosure because of a past incident involving a previous zookeeper.
Griffin is the only human who takes the time to listen to Bernie and realizes the gorilla was framed for the incident that led to his isolation. In return, Bernie becomes Griffin's primary coach and confidant, eventually even breaking out of the zoo to go on a night out on the town with Griffin to a TGI Fridays restaurant. Bernie's major advice to Griffin is about inner confidence and loyalty. He teaches Griffin the importance of standing up for himself and being true to his own nature rather than pretending to be something he isn't just to impress a woman.
2. Donald
Donald is a fast-talking capuchin monkey who is one of the most mischievous residents of the zoo. He is played by the real life Crystal the monkey, but his voice is provided by the comedy superstar Adam Sandler. Donald serves as one of the most vocal members of the animal council that decides to break their code of silence to help Griffin win back his sweetheart. He is one of the first animals to enthusiastically support the idea of teaching Griffin their "secrets".
Donald's primary contribution to Griffin's training is the "throwing poo" philosophy - though more as a metaphor for being disruptive and aggressive to get what you want. He encourages Griffin to be loud, cause a scene, and attempt to establish dominance. This helps Griffin break out of his shell and stop being so passive in his pursuit of love.
3. Jerome
Jerome is one half of the zoo's bickering grizzly bear duo. While a real grizzly (Bart the Bear 2) was used for some shots, the character is primarily brought to life through a combination of animatronics and CGI. His booming voice is provided by actor and director Jon Favreau. Jerome's role is largely defined by his double-act dynamic with the other grizzly bear, Bruce. They act as the "muscle" of the animal council.
Jerome's most famous contribution to Griffin's training is teaching him bear moves to impress a female. This is the grizzly bear's method of making himself look as large and intimidating as possible to assert dominance. This involves standing tall, throwing arms out to the side, and walking with a heavy, aggressive swagger.
4. Janet
Janet is the elegant and authoritative matriarch of the zoo, often acting as the voice of reason among the more chaotic male animals. She is the partner of Joe the lion and possesses a regal, no-nonsense attitude. Her sophisticated and commanding voice is provided by the legendary singer and actress Cher.
She is very grateful to Griffin for saving her life after almost choking. In return, she encourages the animals to help Griffin by giving him pointers for his love life. She herself stresses Griffin to be authentic rather than pretending to be something different. Janet also teaches Griffin that confidence is projected through how one carries themselves. She is not above recommending utilizing a date's jealousy.
5. Joe
Joe is the self-appointed leader of the zoo's animal council and the primary alpha male of the group. He carries himself with intensity and slightly misplaced confidence, as he is convinced his methods of social dominance are foolproof. His deep voice is provided by action icon Sylvester Stallone. Joe takes Griffin under his wing with a tough-love approach, often bickering with his partner, Janet, when she suggests more subtle dating tactics.
Joe's most famous piece of advice is to be "alpha" in all things dealing with women. This involves looking people directly in the eye, roaring loudly, and showing no fear. Although these particular tactics backfire on Griffin, it does help him with self confidence.
6. Barry
Barry is the gentle giant of the zoo's animal council. Despite his massive size, he is one of the more sensitive and soft-spoken members of the group. His distinctively dry and somewhat anxious voice is provided by actor and filmmaker Judd Apatow. He is a loyal friend to the other animals and is genuinely concerned with Griffin's success, even if he is a bit sceptical of some of the more aggressive tactics suggested by the others.
True to the "an elephant never forgets" mantra, Barry encourages Griffin to use his history and shared memories with Leslie to his advantage. He teaches Griffin that sometimes, instead of being the loudest person in the room, you just need to be the one who is reliably there, standing your ground. He also condones stress eating.
7. Mollie
Mollie is the zoo's literal "eyes in the sky", using her height to keep a lookout for the zookeepers during the animals' secret meetings. She has a grounded, slightly dry personality that balances out the more eccentric male animals. Her voice is provided by Maya Rudolph. She is often the one to remind the group of the risks they are taking by talking to a human, but she is ultimately supportive of Griffin.
Her main advice to Griffin is that he needs to hold his head high and look down on his problems rather than letting them overwhelm him. He should elevate his body physically and project an air of being unreachable.
8. Sebastian
Sebastian is the resident alpha predator wolf. He is portrayed with a sleek, intimidating presence that highlights his role as a pack leader. His voice is provided by Bas Rutten, a mixed martial artist and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, which adds an authentic layer of "tough guy" energy to the character.
Sebastian is more focused on the tactical side of social hierarchy and how a predator identifies and secures their "prey", which in this case is Griffin's ex-girlfriend. One of his more hilarious suggestions (with a demonstration) is that Griffin should mark his territory by urinating on various objects around him.
9. Jim
Jim is a small but mighty personality at the zoo, often found perched on rocks or near the water during the secret meetings. He is a classic American bullfrog with a large voice for his size. His voice is provided by the "King of Insult Comedy", Don Rickles, which gives the frog a sharp-witted and cynical edge. Despite his stature, he is treated as an equal member of the group and is just as invested in helping Griffin navigate his love life.
Jim's specific contribution to Griffin's training is the "Puffing the Throat" technique. He teaches Griffin that even if you aren't the biggest guy in the room, you can look more impressive by expanding your presence physically. This leads to a hilarious scene where Griffin attempts to "puff out" his neck and squat while at a high-end fashion event, resulting in him looking ridiculous as he splits his pants wide open.
10. Crow
Crow is the zoo's cynical, high-perched observer. He is often seen hanging around the edges of the animal council meetings, offering dry and pessimistic commentary on Griffin's progress. His voice was provided by Jim Breuer. Because he can fly and observe the humans from above without being noticed, he has a very low opinion of human behavior.
Crow's contribution to Griffin is more about that observation angle. He suggests to not care so much what people think and to consider just respecting himself rather than acting like the zoo animals.
