The E Street Band has been the supporting band for Bruce Springsteen since 1972. The name of the band came about after David Sancious's mother lived on E Street, in Belmar, New Jersey. She allowed the band to practice in her garage. The first studio album for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band was "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.", released on January 5, 1973.

The band has been active from 1972 to 1989 and from 1995 to 1999 and beyond, and it has been the primary band for most of this period.
