Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Happy Together' (1967)

The Turtles were formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1965. LA was a hub for emerging rock and pop acts at the time, as it had strong connections to record labels and radio stations. They were originally a surf rock group called The Crossfires.

'Happy Together' reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. It was written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, who were members of the Magicians. They went on to write songs for other artists, including Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa, and The Lovin' Spoonful.

In 1999, the song was used in a commercial for the Nintendo 64 crossover fighting game 'Super Smash Bros'. It has also featured in films, TV shows and other commercials.
2. 'Born to be Wild' (1968)

Steppenwolf was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1967, by John Kay (vocals, guitar), Goldy McJohn (keyboards) and Jerry Edmonton (drums). Guitarist Michael Monarch and bassist Rushton Moreve joined after responding to notices placed in Los Angeles record and instrument stores.

Written by Mars Bonfire, 'Born to Be Wild' reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1968 and achieved number one on Canada's RPM Chart. It also reached number 30 on the UK Singles Chart in 1969.

The song featured prominently in the 1969 film 'Easy Rider' and became associated with biker culture and freedom.
3. 'Joy to the World' (1971)

The American band Three Dog Night were formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1967 by vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. They became one of the most successful groups of the late 1960s and 1970s.

Their single 'Joy to the World' was written by Hoyt Axton, a country singer-songwriter from Oklahoma. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1971 and number 24 on the UK Singles Chart and became their biggest hit. It's famous for its opening line, 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog'.

The song was originally intended for an animated TV special called 'The Happy Song', which never materialised.
4. 'Do I Wanna Know?' (2013)

Arctic Monkeys formed in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, with founding members Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Matt Helders, and Andy Nicholson, who were high school friends. They started out as teenagers, rehearsing in garages and handing out demo CDs at gigs. Those demos spread online and built a cult following before they even signed a record deal.

'Do I Wanna Know?' peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in 2013. It appeared on 11 different charts worldwide, including Portugal, where it reached number ten, becoming their biggest global hit.

Arctic Monkeys have won multiple awards, including: seven Brit Awards, three for Best British Group, three for British Album of the Year and one for British Breakthrough Act.
5. 'Nothing Lasts Forever' (1997)

British band Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool, England, in 1978 with original members Ian McCulloch, Will Sergeant and Les Pattinson. They initially used a drum machine they nicknamed 'Echo', which is how the band got its name (though this has been denied by the band). Drummer Pete de Freitas joined in 1979, replacing the drum machine.

'Nothing Lasts Forever' reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart in 1997. It was released during the band's comeback period after they had split up in the early 1990s. It includes vocals and hand claps from Oasis's Liam Gallagher, who was recording in the studio next door at the time.
6. 'When the Children Cry' (1989)

The American rock band White Lion was formed in New York City in 1983 by Danish vocalist Mike Tramp (born Michael Trempenau) and American guitarist Vito Bratta. The glam metal band became particularly successful in the late 1980s.

Written by Mike Tramp and Vito Bratta, in 1985 'When the Children Cry' was influenced by the humanitarian concerns of that era, including the African famine, and also partly by singer Mike Tramp's childhood, as his father left the family when he was around five or six years old. It peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1989.
7. 'For What It's Worth' (1967)

Buffalo Springfield was formed in 1966 in Los Angeles by Americans Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, together with Canadians Neil Young, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin.

Their single 'For What It's Worth' reached number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. It was written by Stephen Stills in response to youth protests in Los Angeles (not directly about Vietnam, though it became associated with anti‑war movements).

Buffalo Springfield split up in 1968. Neil Young and Stephen Stills went on to join David Crosby (ex-Byrds) and Graham Nash (ex-Hollies), forming a new band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
8. 'All I Want' (1992)

Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band, formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986, with band members Glen Phillips (vocals/guitar), Todd Nichols (guitar), Dean Dinning (bass) and Randy Guss (drums). They rose to fame in the early 1990s.

Released in 1992, their single 'All I Want' reached number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot and number ten on the U.S. Cash Box Top 100.

Their unusual name comes from a Monty Python comedy sketch written by Eric Idle. He never thought anyone would actually use it for a real band, so it must have been a surprise for him when he heard them on the radio years later!
9. 'Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)' (1986)

The Canadian rock band Glass Tiger formed in Newmarket, Ontario, in 1983 with Alan Frew (lead vocals), Sam Reid (keyboards), Al Connelly (guitar), Wayne Parker (bass) and Michael Hanson (drums).

Released from their album 'The Thin Red Line', 'Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)' reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. It was written by Jim Vallance together with Alan Frew and Sam Reid.

Bryan Adams can be heard providing background vocals towards the end of the song. He and songwriter Jim Vallance frequently worked together on writing projects.
10. 'Don't Cha' (2005)

The Pussycat Dolls, originally a neo-burlesque dance troupe, were formed in 1995 in Los Angeles, California, by choreographer Robin Antin. They decided to become a mainstream pop group following a suggestion by Jimmy Iovine, a record executive and media proprietor who co-founded Interscope Records.

Their single 'Don't Cha (featuring Busta Rhymes)' reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2005. It sold millions worldwide and was also number one in Australia, Germany, Ireland, and several other countries.

The Pussycat Dolls split up in 2009 after years of internal conflict, caused by Nicole Scherzinger being promoted as their lead singer. The others were not happy about this, combined with her also focusing on her solo career.
