Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1962 gem from Boris Pickett became a perennial Halloween favorite. It was rendered with a Boris Karloff voice. It was a "graveyard smash and it caught on with a flash." Can you identify this song in a dash?

Answer: Monster Mash

This was a big hit for Bobby Boris Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers in 1962. Yes, I transposed the lyrics a bit, so don't have a fit. Suffice it to say that this song was a great hit from the 60's. It was featured on the Dr. Demento show in 1976. (Syndicated show) It happened to be one of the most popular Halloween songs appearing on Dr. Demento.
2. This elegant song appeared on the Dr. Demento list in October of 1979. It references a collocation of bones sequestered in a cabinet. Louis Armstrong was the singer.

Answer: Skeleton in the Closet

Even though this song appeared in the film, "Pennies from Heaven," in 1936, it emerged as a great favorite on the Dr. Demento show, appearing year after year. "That's all there is. There isn't anymore." This was the final enigmatic line appearing at the end of the song.
3. Warren Zevon belted out this song about some lupine creatures appearing in London. What howling creature did he sing about?

Answer: Werewolf

In 1988, Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" appeared at number number on the Dr. Demento list. This was the October 1988 Halloween list. It's interesting that the father and son, Lon Chaney (Junior and Senior) are mentioned in the lyrics of this song. However, Lon Chaney, Jr. was the ultimate "wolfman" and perhaps much to his chagrin, the role became his typecast.
4. This memorable song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins has appeared in television and films. From the title, what did he put on you?

Answer: a spell

This song appeared on the Dr. Demento list at the number three spot in October, 1991. The song did not launch Jay into stardom, but it was covered by at least 50 other artists. Nevertheless, Hawkins had a supreme stage presence which deserves a Halloween tribute.
5. This underground work, pun intended, was a Halloween favorite from Barnes and Barnes on the Dr. Dememto Show. What is the title of this macabre song?

Answer: Cemetery Girls

The theme is Halloween, so "Cemetery Girls" is the best fit. The song was made with many voice inserts from Billy Mumy's portrayal as the evil kid from, "It's a Good Life."
6. This song was originally done by the Five Jones Boys. It was also covered 'a capella' by The Magnificent Seven. It is about a ghost going to a place smaller than a city.

Answer: Mr. Ghost Goes to Town

"Who's there, who's there?
Up there on the stairs
Beware, beware
I hear somebody coming

Up on his toes
Oh look, there he goes
Mr. Ghost is going to town."

An underrated Halloween delight.
7. Whether you like rap music or not, I might be remiss to exclude this entry from 1983, by Whodini. It was entitled, "The Haunted House of _______?" (another musical genre)

Answer: Rock

"Or could it be that you were scared
It's just not fair that you couldn't be there
Because you really missed a lot and I'm tellin' you
We really brought the place down at the haunted house of rock."

Well, it is a bit catchy and it landed on the Dr. Demento list in 1984.
8. Butch Patrick portrayed the character named Eddie from which of the following shows? (He was the kid from Mockingbird Lane)

Answer: The Munsters

Eddie was the little werewolf from, "The Munsters." Butch Patrick essayed a nice little tune entitled, "What Ever Happened to Eddie?" It appeared on the Dr. Demento Show in 2004.
9. Perhaps, this is not a traditional Halloween song, per se, but it exemplifies the character of Halloween. The subject of the song is about an annoying arachnid brilliantly played by "The Who." What is the title of this song?

Answer: Boris the Spider

This song appeared as recently as 2009 on the syndicated Dr. Demento Show for Halloween. The Who seemed to have a grand time playing this song. Alas, for the poor spider, it met its end in the finale of the song.
10. This song appeared on the Dr. Demento show in October, 2010. The version portrayed is by Marilyn Manson, but I prefer the original. From which film does the original entry appear? "This is Halloween, this is Halloween, pumpkins scream in the dead of night." It was directed by Tim Burton.

Answer: Nightmare Before Christmas

Even though the title of the song and film, is "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the song depicts a distinctive Halloween theme.

"This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright.

It's our town, everybody scream
In this town of Halloween."

"Say it once, say it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice
Ride with the moon in the dead of night."
