Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following colorful songs, released in 1980, is by AC/DC?

Answer: Back in Black

"Back in Black", from the AC/DC album of the same name, has what is often considered to be one of the most famous guitar riffs of all time. "White Christmas" was famously sung by Bing Crosby, "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis Presley, and "Green, Green Grass of Home" first by country singer Johnny Darrell and then by Tom Jones.

2. Because he felt the lyrics were misunderstood by the American right, Bruce Springsteen denied Ronald Reagan the use of which of his songs?

Answer: Born in the USA

While the chorus is certainly catchy and seems to imply a strong patriotic theme, the song is actually about the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans following their return home from the war, as well as the unemployed protagonist's disillusionment with being an American who fought for his country. Reagan cited the song as a "message of hope" in one of his campaign speeches.

3. In "A Christmas Story" (1983), three Chinese waiters in a Chinese restaurant sing "fa-ra-ra-ra-rah ra-ra-ra-rah" in a stereotypical mispronunciation of the song's refrain. What song are they singing?

Answer: Deck the Halls

After the neighbour's dogs steal Ralphie's family's Christmas turkey, the family goes out for Christmas dinner. At Bo Ling, Chop Suey Palace Co., the waiters attempt to make the meal more like a Christmas feast by singing "Deck the harrs with boughs of horry ... 'Tis the season to be jorry." The result is racist but funny.

In 2012, "A Christmas Carol: The Musical" opened on Broadway; the Chinese chorus is omitted, probably reflecting a growing social sense of racial sensitivity. The carol "Deck the Hall" was written in English in 1862 by Thomas Oliphant loosly following earlier Welsh lyrics.

The tune is traditional, dating back to the 16th century. The "fa-la-la-la-lah" in the refrain is an example of musical nonsense syllables called by musicologists "non-lexical vocables" (which means that they sing well but mean nothing).

4. What green-eyed, auburn haired beauty does Dolly Parton beg not to take her man?

Answer: Jolene

Dolly Parton wrote and released "Jolene" in 1973 and it became her second solo number one country hit. She says the song was inspired by a red haired bank teller who flirted with her husband - and her husband's sudden interest in doing the banking! The song has been covered multiple times by singers all over the world. "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Please don't take him just because you can. Your beauty is beyond compare, with flaming locks of auburn hair, with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green."

Answer: The electric chair

The song "The Mercy Seat", by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, is about a man facing execution in the electric chair for committing murder.
