Answer: Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen was trying to break into the mainstream and released his third album in August 1975. "Born to Run" was one of two singles released from the album of the same name. The single peaked at number three on the Billboard Top 200 and had sold six million copies by the year 2000. "Born to Run" was chosen as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". Springsteen had finally made it to the big time and the rest is history!

Answer: Petula Clark

Written by Tony Hatch, Petula Clark's version of "Downtown" topped the charts in the USA and reached number two in the UK in 1964. Hatch claimed to have written it about a visit to New York. Clark received a Best Rock & Roll Record Grammy for "Downtown" in 1965 and won another for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance for "I Know a Place" the following year.

"Ring of Fire" was written in 1963 by Johnny Cash, his wife June Carter and Merle Kilgore. It was first released on "Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash".
Wall of Voodoo made a synthesizer-driven cover of it on their debut EP in 1980.
10 years after, in 1990, Mike Ness and his band, Social Distortion, recorded a punk rock version. A live version of Social Distortion's cover of "Ring of Fire" is included on "Live at Roxy" (1998).

Answer: David Gates

David is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born in 1940 he moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1961. While there, he worked as a music copyist, studio musician and producer. During the 1960s he worked with many artists - most notably - Elvis, Bobby Darin, Merle Haggard, Duane Eddy and Brian Wilson.

The band that backed Chuck Berry included Leon Russell among its line up.
