2. Returning to the studio with a band of eight-legged arachnids from the Red Planet, which British glam rock singer recorded the 1973 album "Aladdin Sane," which features one of the most iconic album covers of all time?

Answer: David Bowie

David Bowie (1947 - 2016) was one of the most influential musicians in history. His music spanned a diverse range of genres, but he is perhaps most recognisable as a glam rocker in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1969, Bowie wrote and recorded the song "Space Oddity," which was subsequently used as backing music for the Apollo 11 moon landing by the BBC; the song launched Bowie's career.

In 1970, he formed a backing band, the Spiders from Mars, and invented a new stage persona for himself: Ziggy Stardust, an androgynous alien rock star who visits Earth before an impending apocalyptic event to deliver a message of hope. Bowie and the Spiders from Mars released two albums: 1972's "Ziggy Stardust and the Rise and Fall of the Spiders from Mars," and 1973's "Aladdin Sane," accompanying both releases with world tours.

The cover of "Aladdin Sane" is a shot of a shirtless Bowie sporting red hair, with a red-and-blue painted lightning bolt splitting his face in two while a teardrop runs down his collarbone; the cover is widely considered as one of the most iconic images in music history.

8. Which of these instruments is both the largest and the lowest-pitched member of the brass family?

Answer: tuba

The tuba (from the Latin word for "trumpet") first appeared in the mid-19th century, eventually replacing another brass instrument called ophicleide. Unlike the trombone, which uses a slide to change the length of the tubing, the tuba uses valves. In a concert tuba, the tubing is wrapped so that the instrument can be placed on one's lap.

The length of the tubing depends on the instrument's pitch, but can be as long as 5.5 m (18 ft). In an orchestra there is typically only one tuba, which has the role of the bass of the brass section. Tubas are also widely used in brass bands, marching bands and jazz bands.

The cornet is a valved brass instrument resembling a trumpet, and thus much smaller and higher-pitched than a tuba. The saxophone, though it is usually made of brass, is part of the woodwind family.

9. Ancient Chinese bianzhong are polyphonic, made of bronze, and are hit with a mallet. What kind of instrument are they?

Answer: chime bells

The bianzhong gained popularity during the Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 1046-771 BCE) and remained influential throughout the subsequent dynasties, including the Warring States and Han periods. This instrument is known for its unique construction, consisting of a set of bronze bells, each with a specific size and pitch, arranged in a wooden frame. Musicians played the bianzhong by striking the bells with wooden mallets, creating harmonious and melodious sounds.

The instrument's significance extends beyond its musical role; it was also used in ceremonies and court events, with some still being utilized in Confucian rituals.
