Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although the Ghostbusters theme tune is not a Christmas song, it was the opening song in our concert. The lyrics were reworded by one of our teachers to make them more "Christmassy". Who recorded the original version of the Ghostbusters theme tune?

Answer: Ray Parker Jr.

Despite not being a Christmas song, this was very well received. Some of the rewritten lyrics included "We all know, IT'S CHRISTMAS", instead of "Who you gonna call, GHOSTBUSTERS" and "Christmas cards to write" instead of "I ain't afraid of no ghost". The decision to open the concert with this came from the fact that we opened our big concert with it last year and it went very well.
2. Next up in the concert was "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer". Who adapted the story of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" into a song?

Answer: Johnny Marks

Johnny Marks adapted the story of Rudolph into song. The song has since been recorded by many artists including Gene Autry and Destiny's Child.
3. The third song in the concert was an instrumental rock version of "Silent Night", dubbed by the performers "Silent Rock". In which language were the original lyrics of Silent Night written?

Answer: German

The original lyrics of "Stille Nacht" were written by a German priest with the melody having been composed by an Austrian headmaster. For our version, the instrumentalists took inspiration from "Canon Rock", the arrangement of Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major" by JerryC.
4. "Last Christmas" by Wham was the next song in our concert. In which year was this song released?

Answer: 1984

"Last Christmas" was beaten to the Christmas number one spot by Band Aid's song "Do They Know It's Christmas?". However, the song still sold one million copies and holds the distinction of being the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach the #1 spot.
5. The fifth song in our concert was "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon. In the original recording there is a choir of children singing in the background (who are credited on the single). Where are they from?

Answer: Harlem

Children from the Harlem Community Choir sang in the background on the original recording. The song was written as a protest against the Vietnam War but it has become a Christmas standard song.
6. The sixth song in our concert was "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". What is the missing line in the song? "The kids in girl and boyland Will have a jubilee ____________________________ All around the Christmas tree"

Answer: They're gonna build a toyland

The song was first sung on Eddie Cantor's radio show in November 1934. It has been covered by many artists including Mariah Carey, the Jackson Five, Frank Sinatra, Hilary Duff and Destiny's Child.
7. The seventh song was the song that I sang, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday". Which "magical" group sang this song?

Answer: Wizzard

The lead singer of the band, Roy Wood, was well known for his facepaint and colourful costumes. In our version, we ended the song after the second verse and chorus. We only had a day and a half to rehearse our version, but it still went well.
8. Our eighth song was "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. What were the names of the co-founders of Band Aid?

Answer: Bob Geldof and Midge Ure

Bob Geldof and Midge Ure brought together a group of the most successful British and Irish pop music performers to make this song. It was released to help raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. This song has been released three times: in 1984, 1989 and 2004.
9. The final song was "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade. What was the name of the lead singer of Slade?

Answer: Noddy Holder

Interestingly neither this song, nor "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" were in our original concert plan. But we added them, and they went very well!
10. How many of these songs were Christmas number ones in the UK singles chart? "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", "Silent Night", "Last Christmas", "Happy Xmas (War is Over)", "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", "Do They Know It's Christmas?", "Merry Xmas Everybody"

Answer: 3

Only "Merry Xmas Everybody" and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" actually reached the Christmas number one spot. "Do They Know It's Christmas?" actually reached the Christmas number one on three separate occasions, once on its original release in 1984, a second time in 1989 and again when it was re-released in 2004.

*Edit*
There were actually three that were Christmas number one as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was the Christmas number one in 1950.

Hope you enjoyed my quiz, thankyou for playing.
