"Bitter Sweet Symphony" was released by the English band The Verve on 16 June 1997. The song was written by the frontman and lead singer Richard Ashcroft. The song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and reached number three on the US Triple-A chart (Billboard).

The Verve was formed in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, in 1990. Band members were Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones, and Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong joined the band but only for their first reunion. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was the first single that was released on the band's third studio album, "Urban Hymns," released on 29 September 1997.

Three other very successful songs from the band were "The Drugs Don't Work," "Lucky Man," and "Love Is Noise." The band was active between 1990 and 1995, 1997 and 1999, and 2007 and 2009.

In 1998, the American company Nike used the song in one of its commercials, "I Can".
2. Fix You

Coldplay released the song "Fix You" on 5 September 2005. The record's flip side featured "The World Turned Upside Down" and "Pour Me" (live at the Hollywood Bowl). The song was written in a joint effort between all the band members. On the UK singles chart the song reached number four, while in the US it peaked at number three on the Adult Alternative Airplay (Billboard).

Coldplay formed in London in 1997. Members of the band are Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion, and Phil Harvey. The band released ten albums between 2000 and 2024. 3. I Can't Dance

"I Can't Dance" was released by Genesis on 30 December 1991. The flip side was called "On the Shoreline." Songwriters were band members Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford. The song reached number two on the US Mainstream Rock (Billboard) and peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart.

Genesis was formed in 1967 at a public school called Charterhouse School, which was located at Godalming, Surrey, around 30 miles from London. Original members were Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford, with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett joining the trio in the very early 1970s. Highly rated albums from the band were "Abacab" (1981), "Genesis" (1983), "Invisible Touch" (1986), and "We Can't Dance" (1991).

The band released 15 studio albums between 1969 and 1997. They broke up in 2022.
4. Won't Get Fooled Again

A great song by The Who going back to 1971. The flip side of "Won't Get Fooled Again" was called "I Don't Even Know Myself." The songs were written by Pete Townshend. The full version of the song is on the band's fifth studio album, "Who's Next," which is just over eight and a half minutes long compared to 3:36 minutes for the single record.

The single is shorter due to radio airtime restrictions. Radio stations often refused to play longer versions of songs, so the album version was modified for radio play. The song reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart and stalled at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
5. New Year's Day

"New Year's Day" was released by U2 on 10 January 1983. The flip side of the record was called "Treasure (Whatever Happened to Pete the Chop)." This song was also the lead single from the band's third studio album, "War," which was released on 28 February 1983.

On the charts, "New Year's Day" reached number two on the US Billboard Top Tracks and number ten on the UK Singles Chart. This song has a fantastic bass line from the band's bass player, Adam Clayton.

The lyrics reference the Solidarity movement headed by Lech Walesa in Poland. Following the recording, Poland announced the end of martial law, which took effect on New Year's Day, 1983.
6. The Boys Are Back in Town

Thin Lizzy recorded the song "The Boys Are Back in Town" in April 1976. The flip side of the record was called "Emerald" or "Jailbreak." The song was the lead single from the band's sixth studio album, "Jailbreak" which was released on 26 March 1976.

Thin Lizzy were formed in Dublin in 1969. The frontman for the band was Phil Lynott, who was the bass player and main songwriter. They had several line-ups over the years, with Lynott the only member of the band from the beginning until his death in 1986.

Between 1971 and 1983, Thin LIzzy released twelve studio albums. Notable singles from the band were "Whiskey in the Jar" (1972), "The Boys Are Back in Town" (1976), and "Waiting for an Alibi" (1979). The band has been on hiatus since 2019.
7. Zombie

The Irish band The Cranberries was formed in Limerick in 1989. The band consisted of Mike Hogan, Noel Hogan, Fergal Lawler, Niall Quinn, and Dolores O'Riordan. O'Riordan replaced Niall Quinn in 1990. They were quite successful in the 1990s, with four of their albums being a commercial success, all of which charted in several countries.

The single "Zombie" was released 19 September 1994. Dolores O'Riordan, the lead vocalist, wrote the song. The flip side was called "Away." On the charts, the song went to number one on the US Alternative Airplay (Billboard) as well as topping the charts in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, and Germany, among others.
8. Teenage Kicks

This was the first record to be released by The Undertones. "Teenage Kicks" was released on 21 October 1978. The flip side was called "True Confessions." The song was written by the band's rhythm guitarist J.J. O'Neill, who also wrote most of their songs.

The Undertones were formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1974; the frontman was Feargal Sharkey. The band enjoyed success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with songs like "My Perfect Cousin," "Jimmy Jimmy," and "Wednesday Week."

Franz Ferdinand was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2002. Between 2004 and 2025, the band has released six studio albums, with their debut studio album titled "Franz Ferdinand," released on 9 February 2004.

"Come and Get It" was released by the Welsh band Badfinger on December 5, 1969, with the flip side titled "Rock of All Ages." The song was written by Paul McCartney, the bassist for The Beatles. Badfinger was formed in Swansea in 1961. The band's heyday was between 1970 and 1972, during which they had four major hits: "Come and Get It"; "No Matter What" (1970); "Day After Day" (1971); and "Baby Blue" (1972). The band also released "Without You" in 1970, which was famously covered by Harry Nilsson. Nilsson's version reached number one on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
