Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1993 which lady was appointed Director General of MI5?

Answer: Stella Rimington

Between 1969 and 1990 Stella Rimington worked in all three branches of MI5, counter espionage, counter terrorism and counter subversion. Promoted to Deputy Director General in 1990 she oversaw the move of the organisation to Thames House. Her appointment to Director General saw an intense media campaign to identify her, with two papers actually publishing covert photographs of her. Despite this she initiated a campaign to make the security services more open and transparent. She retired from MI5 in 1996 and was made a Dame Commander of Order of the Bath in the 1996 New Year Honours List.

The other three ladies are all British Members of Parliament.
2. There have been quite a high number of women Prime Ministers and/or Presidents of various countries. Helen Clark succeeded Jenny Shipley as Prime Minister in which country?

Answer: New Zealand

After being the first country to give women full voting rights New Zealand has continued to embrace the idea of political women. Jenny Shipley was Prime Minister from 1997 to 1999 and she was immediately succeeded by Helen Clark, who served consecutive terms from 1999 to 2008.

Bermuda, Australia and Canada have also all had at least one woman serve as either Prime Minister or Premier during the 20th century.
3. Once the managing director of a football club she then became assistant to Alan Sugar. This lady has certainly made her mark. Who is she?

Answer: Karren Brady

Karren Brady was only 23 when she was appointed managing director of Birmingham City Football Club. This made her not only the first woman to hold such a post, but also one of the youngest people to be in charge of a football club. She left Birmingham in 2009 when the club was sold, and in 2010 was appointed vice chairman of West Ham United.

She has also appeared on "The Apprentice" as one of Lord Sugar's assistants.
4. Appointed by Bill Clinton, who was the first woman to be U.S. Secretary of State?

Answer: Madeleine Albright

Prior to her appointment as Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was Ambassador to the United Nation. When she was appointed Secretary of State she was not only the first woman to hold the position, but was also the highest ranking woman in the history of U.S. Government at that time. Because she was not born in the United States she was not eligible as a Presidential Successor.

She is fluent in several languages and holds a PhD from Columbia University.
5. Shoes, glorious shoes! - Something all women have a weakness for. Which female entrepreneur co-founded Jimmy Choo Company?

Answer: Tamara Mellon

Born in 1967, Tamara Mellon was accessories editor for British "Vogue", where she soon recognized the potential for high end accessories. She approached Jimmy Choo, who at that time was doing hand made bespoke shoes, with the idea of founding a ready-to-wear shoe company.

The company has gone from strength to strength with retail outlets all over the world. They have diversified into handbags and other leather goods, and in 2007 Tamara Mellon was, according to the "Sunday Times Rich List" the 64th richest woman in Britain with an estimated fortune of £99 Million.
6. Long before Margaret Thatcher, the term "Iron Lady" was applied to another female Prime Minister, Golda Meir. From 1969 to 1974 she was Prime Minister of which country?

Answer: Israel

Before being elected Prime Minister Golda Meir had served as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. She was elected in March 1969, and former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion described her as "the best man in the cabinet", another description later also given to Margaret Thatcher. Looking like a grey haired grandmother she had a reputation for being both strong willed and straight talking.

She resigned in 1974 after the Yom Kippur war and died in 1978.
7. In 1983 Sophie Mirman and her husband Richard Ross founded which company?

Answer: Sock Shop

Sophie Mirman wanted a shop where women could buy hosiery easily without having to hunt through large department stores. Working as retail director for Tie Rack gave her the basic idea of a small specialist store. Unable to attract investors she secured funding from a Government loan guarantee programme, and opened the first Sock Shop in the concourse of Knightsbridge Tube Station in 1983.

The idea of a small specialist retail outlet with no doors, easy access to all stock and bright colourful products was an instant hit and by 1987 they had 57 shops.

Unfortunately, expansion into America coincided with a recession in Britain and in 1990 they went into administration.
8. In 2011 Christine Lagarde was made the first female head of the International Monetary Fund. What was her job prior to this appointment?

Answer: French Finance Minister

Ms. Lagarde has held all of these jobs, but immediately prior to her five year appointment as head of the International Monetary Fund she was in charge of France's finances. With a Master's Degree in Political Science, as well as being able to boast that she was the first female Chairman of Chicago law firm Baker & NcKenzie she is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
9. This former First Lady of the USA was the first to become a Senator. Can you name her?

Answer: Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton is the first former First Lady to run for public office in her own right. She was elected Senator for New York in 2000, making her the first female to represent that state. She has served in the Obama administration as Secretary of State.
10. No quiz on women in charge would be complete with Margaret Thatcher making an appearance. She became leader of the UK Conservative Party in 1975, ousting which former leader?

Answer: Edward Heath

Like her or loathe her, Margaret Thatcher made a lasting impact on British politics. Ousting Edward Heath as party leader, an act that he never forgave her for, she became the first woman to lead a British political party, and in 1979 became the first female British Prime Minister.

She was variously described as the "Iron Lady" and "the best man in the government". Her reign ended in 1990 when Michael Heseltine challenged her for the party leadership. He did not win the leadership election, but the party elected John Major, who took over as Prime Minister and went on to be the elected Prime Minister at the next General Election.
