Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A brother of Miriam

Answer: Aaron

Going strictly by Scripture, Aaron was one of two brothers of Miriam. The other brother was Moses.

Amram and his wife Jochebed were the parents of Miriam, Aaron and Moses. They were descendants of the tribe of Levi.

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt on a forty-year-long journey to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. Aaron and Miriam both assisted Moses in his endeavour.
2. The mother of Samuel

Answer: Hannah

Hannah was the mother of Samuel, a noted judge of Israel.

According to Scripture, Hannah was one of two wives of Elkanah. The other wife was Peninniah.

Hannah was unable to conceive while Peninniah was the mother of an unstated number of children.

! Samuel 1 tells of Peninniah taking delight in making Hannah feel small because of her inability to conceive. Things changed dramatically, however, when Hannah fervently prayed to God and miraculously gave birth to Samuuel.

Samuel was the last judge of Israel. He was replaced as leader of the Israelites by Saul who was crowned as the first king of Israel.
3. Name the Babylonians gave Daniel

Answer: Belteshazzar

Daniel 1:7 tells of Daniel being given the Babylonian name Belteshazzar by the chief official under King Nebuchadnezzar. The renaming was apparently an attempt to force assimilation of the Jewish people into Babylonian culture after they were taken captive.

On this theme, three friends of Daniel also received new names. Hananiah became Shadrach, Mishael became Meshach and Azariah became Abednego.
4. One of twelve sons of Jacob

Answer: Issachar

Issachar was the son of Jacob and his first wife Leah. In order of birth, Issachar was the ninth of twelve sons of Jacob.

Also giving birth to sons for Jacob was Rachel, his second wife and younger sister of Leah.

Jacob also slept with Bilhah and Zilpah, two handmaidens to his wives, and they also gave birth to sons.
5. One of several women who followed Jesus

Answer: Susanna

Susanna is the correct answer. She is mentioned in passing reference in Luke 8:1-3 as one of several women who followed Jesus and contributed to His ministry.

No one knows for certain, but it is assumed by many that Susanna was a woman of means, enabling her to contribute to Christ's ministry.
6. Struck dead for lying about details regarding the sale of property

Answer: Sapphira

Sapphira was struck dead after she told Peter that she and her husband Ananias had sold a parcel of land an donated all the proceeds to the early church. In reality, the couple had kept some of the money for themselves.

According to Scripture, Ananias was struck dead first for telling the same lie. Sapphira, not knowing her husband had been struck dead, met Peter three hours later and was asked by Peter if they had sold the land for a certain price. When Sapphira confirmed the price, Scripture states "she fell down at his feet and breathed her last."

For details see Acts 5:1-11.
7. An evangelist who was schooled by Priscilla and Aquila

Answer: Apollos

Apollos was an eloquent speaker in the early church, hailing from Alexandria, Egypt.

While Apollos was an eloquent speaker about Jesus, Scripture states his knowledge was incomplete. Aquila and Priscilla, two workers in the early church and a friend of Paul, took Apollos under their wings and taught him the way of God "more accurately".

Acts 18:26-27 in the NKJV explains things this way: "When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace."
8. A diminutive tax collector

Answer: Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in Jericho. He was also short in stature and Scripture tells of Zacchaeus climbing up a sycamore tree to get a better look at Jesus as He passed through the town.

When Jesus saw Zacchaeus in the tree, He commanded him to come down, stating He was to spend the night at his house.

Scripture tells of the crowd complaining about Christ's decision to stay at the house of Zadccheus because tax collectors were despised in Jewish society. In addition to working for the Romans, the occupiers of Israel, tax collectors were seen as cheats.

Luke 9:8-10 in the NKJV tell what happened next: "Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, 'Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.' And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.'"
9. A tax collector also known as Levi

Answer: Matthew

Matthew, one of the original twelve disciples, was a tax collector who was also called Levi.

He is credited with writing the Gospel of Matthew, the first book in the New Testament.

Being a tax collector, Matthew would have worked for the Romans. As a result he would have been perceived as a traitor and would be a social outcast.
10. An elderly woman and a prophetess

Answer: Anna

According to Scripture, Anna was elderly and a prophetess who did not depart from the temple, "but served God with fastings and prayers night and day"

When Joseph and Mary took baby Jesus to the temple, Scripture states Anna "gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."

For details, see Luke 2:36-38.
