Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The words are tent, peg, and temple (this temple means head, not a place of worship, to clarify). What is the story found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Jael kills Sisera.

In Judges 4:21 of the ESV, it says that Jael took a tent peg and hammered it into Sisera's temple while he slept. Of course, he died.

Sisera was an army commander who had been a cruel oppressor of the Israelites. Deborah, who was the judge at that time (also a prophetess), sent Barak to deal with Sisera, but he demanded that Deborah go with him. Sisera ended up fleeing and met Jael. She had him sleep in his tent, covering him with a rug, giving him some milk, and then killed him.
2. What New Testament story comes to mind with these three words: robbers, compassion, and mercy?

Answer: The Good Samaritan

In Luke 10:25-37 ESV, Jesus tells the parable of the good Samaritan to a lawyer. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a Jewish man being robbed, beaten, and left for dead. A priest sees him, but avoids him, moving to the other side of the street. Then a Levite also sees him and does the same thing.

A Samaritan (who traditionally did not get along with the Jewish people) sees him and shows compassion and mercy, helping the man. He then takes him to an inn on the back of his animal, and pays the innkeeper to take care of him, saying that if the innkeeper needs more, he will pay that as well on his way back through.

Jesus tells the lawyer to be like the good Samaritan.
3. What Old Testament story is associated with the words fire, Baal, and mocked?

Answer: Elijah challenges those who worship Baal

In the 18th chapter of 1 Kings in the ESV, Elijah is mocked by Ahab, Jezebel, and the other Baal worshippers for being faithful to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In reality, they were mocking God Himself. Elijah challenged them to meet at Mount Carmel. They were each to choose a bull to sacrifice, and some wood, but they were not to put fire on it. Then they would call on Baal, and Elijah would call on his God. Elijah said they would see who was more powerful. Elijah also poured water around his wood multiple times.

They both called to whom they worshipped. Nothing happened with the ones who called to Baal. But in verse 38A it says, "Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood..."
4. The words Zechariah, mute, and angel would make you think of what New Testament story?

Answer: Zechariah is struck mute after an angel tells him he will become a father.

In Luke 1 (ESV), Zechariah is the husband of Elizabeth, and is also one of the priests. They were both old and beyond childbearing years. Gabriel, the angel, appears while Zechariah is in the temple of the Lord to burn incense. Gabriel tells him Elizabeth is pregnant and he's going to be a father. Zechariah does not believe it and wants a sign. Gabriel tells him in verse 19, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news."

In other words, he tells him, dude, I'm an angel sent by God, what more could you possibly need? And then he tells Zechariah that he will be mute until the baby is born, because he did not believe.
5. What Old Testament story do you think of with these three words: rope, scarlet, and spies?

Answer: Rahab helps the spies

In Joshua 2 of the ESV, Joshua sends two spies to spy on the land in the area, especially Jericho. They meet a prostitute named Rahab, who ends up hiding them when the king discovers there are spies in the land. She hides the spies and tells them she knows the LORD gave them the land. She asks them because she hid them when the time came for them to spare her and her family from harm. She then lowers them with a rope so they can leave the city wall safely.

They tell her when they return she should tie a scarlet cord in the window that they were just lowered down from. She is to have her family all gather in the house as well, and everyone in it will be spared.

They do keep their promise, and it says in Hebrews 11:31, "By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies."
6. What New Testament story comes to mind when you hear the words ten, one, and cleansed?

Answer: Jesus cleanses ten lepers

In Luke 17:11-19 (ESV), Jesus cleans 10 people of leprosy. He tells them to go show themselves to the priest, and as they go, they are cleansed. Only one of the ten turns back to thank Jesus for healing him. That man was a Samaritan, meaning that, unlike the others, he was not Jewish. Jesus asked about the other nine, and then told the man, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."
7. What Old Testament story comes to mind when you see the words bald, bear, and boys?

Answer: Elisha is teased because he is bald.

In 2 Kings 2:23-25 (ESV), Elisha was headed to Bethel when a group of boys started to taunt him because he was bald. Elisha then curses them in the name of the Lord, and two female bears come out of the woods. The bears tore 42 boys apart. After that, Elisha went to Mount Carmel.

Elisha had just replaced Elijah, who was taken up to heaven in a chariot.
8. What New Testament story do these three words bring to mind: nets, right, and garment?

Answer: Jesus tells the men to cast their nets on the right side of the boat.

In John 21 (ESV), after Jesus is resurrected from the dead, the disciples go fishing. Jesus appears to them again, but they do not recognize Him. He asks them if they caught any fish, and they answer this man saying, "no." Jesus tells them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. They are fisherman, and always cast on the left, but they listen anyway. When they do, they get so many fish they can't haul the net in.

At this point, they realize it was Jesus speaking to them. Peter is so excited to see Him again, he takes off his outer garment, jumps into the sea, and swims to Jesus. The others also go back to Him, but they take the boat and drag the net filled with fish. Jesus then cooks them breakfast.
9. What Old Testament story comes to mind with these three words: donkey, angel, and three?

Answer: Balaam's donkey talks

In Numbers 22:22-35 (ESV), Balaam had angered God, and one of God's angels stopped Balaam from going any further. However, Balaam does not see the angel who is standing there with a sword, but his donkey does. She refuses to go. Balaam beats the donkey with a stick and tries again, but she refuses to go again. This happened three times.

Then in verse 28, the donkey speaks and says, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?" Balaam is not even fazed by his donkey talking and answers her, saying, "Because you have made a fool of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you."

His donkey points out that she has always been obedient and never acted like this, so maybe he should pay attention, since there is probably a reason. At this point, Balaam's eyes are opened by the LORD, and he also sees the angel standing there.
10. What New Testament story do these three words bring to mind: wedding, water, Mary?

Answer: Jesus turns water into wine.

In John 2:1-12 (ESV), Jesus was at a wedding in Cana. His mother, Mary, was also there. They ran out of wine on the third day, and Mary told her Son. Jesus asked her in verse four, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come."

Mary then goes and tells the servants at the wedding to obey Jesus. They do, and He has them fill six stone water jars. Then, when they served it, it became wine.

This was recorded as Jesus' first miracle.
