Elisha was a prophet of God and the successor to Elijah. One of Elisha's first miracles after assuming Elijah's role was parting the Jordan River, just as his predecessor had done. This act reassured the onlookers that Elisha now carried Elijah's spirit. It was a powerful symbol of God's presence, marking the beginning of his mission. For more information, look at the second chapter of the second Book of Kings.
Gideon was the son of Joash and was a Judge of Israel. With a very small army, he beat and led the Israelites against the Midianites. When Gideon died, the Israelites went back to their old ways and started to worship false gods. Extra information can be found in Judges Chapter 6.
Hophni was the son of Eli, the high priest. Along with his brother Phinehas, he served as a priest in Shiloh. Both brothers committed acts of theft and immorality within the temple of God. Although their father was aware of their corruption, he largely remained passive. The brothers even slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tabernacle, an act considered deeply disrespectful to God. In response, God sent a prophet to Eli's household to pronounce judgment. On that same day, Hophni and Phinehas died in battle. Extra information can be found in the book of Samuel.
Japheth was the oldest of Noah's three sons. When their father became intoxicated, Noah blessed Shem and Japheth for respectfully covering his naked body. However, Ham looked upon his father's nakedness, which was considered disrespectful and offensive. As a result, Ham's descendants were cursed. This story serves as a profound lesson about the importance of honoring one's parents and the consequences of disrespect. Extra information can be found in Genesis 9:23.
Samson was a judge of Israel, an honour bestowed by God. The Bible tells us he was a man of incredible strength, given to him from the Spirit of the Lord. In Judges, it tells the tale of Samson killing a lion with his bare hands. Extra information can be found in Judges 16
Onan was the second son of Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. When Onan's brother Er died, Judah instructed Onan to marry Er's widow, Tamar, to produce offspring in Er's name. This practice, known as levirate marriage, was common at the time to preserve the family lineage. However, Onan was aware that any child born would not be considered his own, so he deliberately prevented conception by spilling his semen on the ground during intercourse. This act displeased the Lord, who consequently put Onan to death. Extra information can be found in Genesis 38.
Reuel was son of Esau, the brother of Jacob, and Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael. Reuel is best known for being the father of Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses. Extra information can be found in Genesis 36.
Shem entered the finished ark with Noah, his mother, his two brothers, and their wives. God only saved eight of the people who were alive at the time. God used Shem, one of Noah's three sons, to replenish the earth following the Great Flood. Extra information can be found in Genesis 7:13.
Gomer was the oldest son of Japheth, and a grandson of Noah. He had three sons, Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. The name of Gomer also refers to a woman, the wife of the prophet Hosea.
Extra information can be found in the Book of Genesis 10:3.
Moab was the son of Lot's eldest daughter, whose name is not known. After the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot and his daughters found refuge in a cave in the mountains. Believing they were the last survivors of their family line, the daughters sought to preserve their lineage. To do so, they got Lot drunk and each had sexual relations with him. The eldest daughter became pregnant and bore a son, whom she named Moab. Extra information can be found in Genesis 19.
